“With the current ‘Danny Meyer’ effect on the New York dining scene (where the guest can bitch their way into getting anything) , it’s refreshing to hear that some restaurants stick to their policies and tell people to suck it.” [What Happens If You Actually Lose Your Ticket at Katz's]

A sports bar in Allston that has been in existence for more than 20 years is shutting its doors soon, and a popular local pizza chain is going to be moving into the space. According to the Boston Herald, the Sports Depot on Cambridge Street will be closing down as soon as a liquor license transfer goes through, and in its place will be a new location of Pizzeria Regina, which could be opening sometime in September, the Herald says.

Turtle Hospital Prepares to Help Victims of the Oil Spill
During a recent visit to the Florida Keys, I toured the Turtle Hospital , the only state-certified veterinary hospital in the world dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles. Located in an old motel, the small staff and dedicated volunteers routinely help injured and sick turtles, and, when possible, release them back into the wild

Cheap Hollywood Getaway
Los Angeles Want to visit a pre-historic Tar Pit and attend a taping of The Tonight Show in the same afternoon? Travel no further than Los Angeles , CA, home of the Hollywood Hills and an incredibly diverse range of cheap attractions. A vacation to Tinsel Town may seem like an idealistic retreat to some, but flights to Los Angeles can be surprisingly affordable. Virgin America offers many June flights from the East coast for less than $300. When I visited LA last May, my round-trip non-stop flight from Boston to LAX cost $179.

Volcanoes Happen
On April 15 th , airports came to a standstill, planes were grounded and travelers stranded. The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland had erupted, creating an ash cloud that forced the cancellation of many flights and disrupted air traffic across northern Europe. Unfortunately (maybe we were fortunate in the long run), my husband and I were among the millions who were left to fend for ourselves. It all started on Saturday, April 18 th .

Papa Gallo’s Is Apparently Coming to Fort Point
An upscale Mexican restaurant appears to be coming to the Fort Point district of Boston. According to Universal Hub, Pappa Gallo’s is looking to open on Summer Street (about a block east of Fort Point Channel), bringing to the neighborhood a higher end dining spot and lounge that, according to a job posting on the Craigslist site, will feature tapas-style plates and more than 100 types of tequila. Last week’s Universal Hub post mentions that a liquor license for Pappa Gallo’s had not been granted at the time of the writing, and that the eatery does not have a lease yet

Hell or Whitney Houston? 260-room Music Box opens beneath Ritan Park
On my way to Phil’s Pub last night, I passed a massive glowing red facade that could be only one of two things: 1) The Ritan Park portal to the depths of Hell or 2) the entrance to a 260-room subterranean KTV. Then again, some people might consider these one and the same.

Queen’s in Sanlitun Village: From Russia via Hong Kong with love
If you have walked between Karaiya Spice House and Ganges Indian Restaurant on the third floor of Sanlitun Village, you have likely seen a yet-to-open spot called Queen’s Konditorei. I popped my head in earlier this week to find what looked like a nearly finished coffee shop with a staircase to a second floor. The

Tasting with Mandoline Grill Food Truck
Last March, while standing in line to check out the Dim Sum Truck , I struck up a conversation with Mong Skillman, Owner of the Mandoline Grill Food Truck . New on the scene, her truck had only been around for a few weeks at the time. We had a really nice conversation and in the midst of it, I asked if she’d be willing to do a tasting for my dining group.

Seven Days and Counting!
As of today we have officially hit the one week till take off mark, and whew, what a crazy past few months I have had! For those of you visiting this blog for the first time, I have been in the process of planning a 9 month trip to Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East for the past year or so. While I have traveled extensively in the past, including a couple of five monthers, this will be the longest to date. Due to the fact that the first half of the trip is purely for pleasure and the second for my thesis research, the logistics of everything have been crazy. To top it all off, my good buddy is getting married in Thailand, yes the very same Thailand that is currently in the midst of major political upheaval, and I am in the wedding! I really can’t wait for everything to be finally happening, but as with all of my trips to developing and third-world countries, the butterflies hit and you start thinking, are you sure about all of this? The answer is always that same, and it’s yes of course I’m ready, but the goodbyes, putting your life in storage, and throwing three sheets to the wind is all about 100% commitment. I’m a travel junkie…I get off on this stuff, but it is always a bit freaky in those last few days before getting dropped off by your sobbing, snot dripping, wreck of a mother at the curb and letting her know that everything will be fine, I love, and I’ll let you know that I am safe and sound in a few days. Talk about feeling your heartbreak! But, like I said, it’s all about 100% committment. Perhaps I am also feeling a bit more trepidation about this trip because I have my graduate thesis on the line here. I need to come back with some results, which will only happen through determination, discipline, and keeping my nose to the grind stone. To better my chances of success, I will be renting an apartment in Cairo for 5 months, which will serve as a home base for traveling around the region and doing research. This is semi-comforting except for the fact that when you are putting money on the line and entering lease agreements in foreign countries, the risk of getting jipped or stuck in tight spot increases.
