A Turbulent Flight

There are certain books that begin with a great premise and a great main character but which are simply unable to deliver on the promise of a well-told story.   This is one of those books.   This 303-page tale of a modern airline traveler loses its interest, its energy and its wings at about the 200-page mark.   From then on, the engines are stalled and the story glides awkwardly to a crash landing on a foam-filled runway. Up in the Air is the story of Ryan Bingham, a so-called Career Transition Counselor, who is hired to help downsizing companies get rid of employees without having them go postal.   Bingham must be part psychologist, part upward mobility trainer and – to a large part – a fraudulent New Age guru who’s supposed to convince the terminated workers that its all for the best.   Of course, Bingham (who views himself as a type of glorified and special purpose accountant) never has to stick around to view the actual damage – the failed marriages, lost homes and suicides.   He convinces himself that he does more good than harm as he flies every day or two on Great West Airlines circa 2001. As we meet the not-t00-likeable and self-absorbed Bingham, he’s submitted his resignation because he is about to accomplish the main goal of his life.   His primary objective is to be the tenth person in the domestic carrier’s history who has flown 1,000,000 miles without leaving the U.S.   Bingham travels so much that he has no home or apartment, he lives in the thin atmosphere land he calls “Airworld.” There’s a lot of inside baseball talk that frequent flyers and frequent lodging chain sleepers will find entertaining…   For example, there’s much debate about the merits of Hilton-owned Hampton Inns versus Marriott Courtyards.   Which one is the best base for corporate warriors, and why is it that a traveler feels almost invisible at the larger Marriott and Hilton properties?   (And why is it that frequent travelers come to need Sound Soothers to sleep?)   Bingham also has this marvelous machine called the Hand Star, the apparent precursor of today’s BlackBerry smartphone.

Latest Review: Picco Restaurant, Boston

The latest review on the Boston’s Hidden Restaurants Web site is Picco , a restaurant in the South End of Boston that features pizza and homemade ice cream. Located on Tremont Street in the heart of the South End neighborhood, Picco is a fairly small dining spot with a funky retro look that includes a soda fountain and a decent-sized outdoor dining area in the warmer months. While the restaurant is known mostly for its pizza and ice cream, it also offers soups, salads, sandwiches, calzones, and pasta dishes as well.

Reflecting on past Thanksgiving news conferences

It is a couple of days before Thanksgiving, a time when so many millions of people are getting ready to use the aviation system to visit friends and family.  Before the economic meltdown, it seemed as if these holidays would just overwhelm the system. Today there is less worry about that, though there is worry that with so much capacity removed from the system that any travelers whose flights are cancelled or delayed for any reason might have trouble making alternative plans.  Several times in recent years, I joined with the then-head of TSA Kip Hawley and Jim May , president of the Air Transport Association (ATA), for a pre-holiday news conference to talk about how the industry was ready for the influx of travelers and to answer questions on what we thought we’d face.  In 2006, that news conference occurred in the context of new regulations on carriage of liquids and gels. A question about the status of cranberry sauce led to a fun exchange, and to TSA announcing that granny’s apple pie could be taken through the check point and was not a violation of the liquid and gels rules.

Laurel’s Places to Go – The Roadhouse

A new Country Music club has opened in Second Life called the Roadhouse.  I attended the grand opening this morning and feel it will become the #1 Country Bar in Second Life!  Friendly people, good music and so much to do in just one location.  The music is Country/Country Rock/Southern Rock without the full sets of rap, metal or hip hop you can find at some other country venues, which puts it ahead of some of the larger clubs already in this genre like Southern Oasis. The sim has available quality shopping, 7 Seas Fishing, bull riding, swimming in a pool with a big ole curly slide, contests, cars you can drive around as you explore and more! It’s not just a pub but a whole entertainment zone.  The line dances here are a bit different as you sit on a “hat” spot on the floor then click on a much larger hat floating above the dance floor to animate, but once going the dances operated quite smoothly except I had a problem stopping dancing as reclicking the floating hat didn’t help.  A relog did fix the problem, however.  On a second visit, the dances worked smoothly and stopped just fine.

New Technology To Assist TSA In Determining Liquid Threats

Given the global concern over the threat of terroristic actions on flights, the TSA’s restrictions regarding the amount and type of liquid a passenger is allowed to carry on a plane are certainly understandable.  While this may be an inconvenience for those with gel shoe inserts, or those who get caught trying to carry on their souvenir snow globe, the technology is apparently not far away that will bring convenience and security back to liquid hording travelers.       According to a recent article I read on The Engineer Online , German researchers at the  Forschungszentrum Jülich are working on an advanced  system that can quickly identify dangerous liquids in passenger luggage.  The procedure uses electromagnetic waves that are able to reflect a substance’s internal molecular structure to provide detailed information about its identity.  Although other similar substance identifying technologies exist, there are certain limitations which this new method has overcome.  What is even more amazing about this technology, if that’s possible, is that it will do this within one fifth of a second.  I’m a pretty patient person, so I would be willing to wait up to two seconds for this process to happen, but one fifth of a second is simply remarkable.  In fact, in the time you have taken to read this, they could have identified roughly 150 substances.         While this technology is not ready for current use, head researchers believe that it could be available for widespread use within the next five years.  I think more than anything, this should be extremely encouraging for travellers to see how these type of technological advances are continuing to be developed to offset the threat of terror and make our airline travel safer and more convenient.

Princeton Who’s Who

This past week, I got a fax from Princeton Who’s Who.  Wow, why would my little start-up business get something like this.  You know the thoughts that go through your mind, “I must be doing something right, I have attracted attention of  Who’s Who for Princeton NJ who want to list me”  Excited about the progress, I printed out the form that I was to fill out and return.  ‘We are pleased to inform you that you and your business have been selected to be published for free in the 2009/2010 Edition of Princeton Who’s Who of Executives, Professionals & Entrepreneurs.’ Who me?  Wow… ‘On November 16th, your candidacy was approved.  Your prompt response is needed to ensure your correct information is published.  For accuracy purposes, please be sure to fill out the information below and FAX it back to 609-6132-5918 at the earliest opportunity.’  Boy oh Boy, that LinkedIn account must be working!! Then it hit me.  It was faxed to ‘Owner/Manager’, not directly to me.  No mention of my name or my company name (Two Sisters Travel). Better Google it to make sure that this is legitimate.   Now my excitement is starting to wane.  Sure enough, this is a scam. Apparently this isn’t so “free”.

Are Travel Agents Extinct?

Quite & Peaceful I was presented with that question the other day at a chamber mixer.  I guess with the internet available to most of the world it would seem that a Travel Professional had gone the way of the dinosaur.  Not so!!  We are alive and well.  In fact more than ever people are turning to a Travel Professional to help them sort through their “information overload”.  How do you know you have the BEST deal, the RIGHT supplier, the PERFECT location and whether or not you are missing any “specials” not available to the general public?  Is your stateroom on that cruise line above/below the dance floor or casino?  What’s the difference between the many cruise lines out there?  Is “all inclusive” the same on every ship/resort?  Which ones really include everything – wines, premium spirits, soft drinks, bottled water, shore excursions, specialty restaurants, and gratuities?

A cautionary tale about online booking

Travel columnist Chris Elliott has a great article today that illustrates exactly what can happen when you trust your all-important vacation to a discount online booking service. I feel bad for the person involved ( especially since they made her cry! ) but I hear SO many stories like this, and I just wonder what the people were thinking? “Cheapo Air”?  Seriously?! Without a travel agent, you’re on your own.
