Galapagos Islands Seek Sustainable Growth

Tourism is an incredibly lucrative industry in the Galapagos: The numbers of visitors have quadrupled between 1990 and 2009, and more than 160,000 people now visit each year. For mainland Ecuadorians, the islands are seen of a source of higher incomes, and many move to the archipelago to earn better wages. But thanks in part to lax enforcement of residency permits, the population of the protected region now stands at 30,000 and is growing at a rate of 6.5 percent a year, compared with 2.0 percent on mainland Ecuador

Checking In: An Eater SF tipster has found…

An Eater SF tipster has found a benefit to Yelp’s new Foursquare-like check in feature for restaurant owners : “If you have an iPhone, you could join Yelp, log in on your phone and see who in the dining room is ‘checked in.’ Users who are ‘checked in’ may not be there to review, but you could certainly make a mental note of whatever they experience and then keep an eye out for their review.” [Eater SF]

Crazy Dough’s Pizza Is Coming to Brighton

It appears that El Pelon Taqueria is not the only new restaurant opening on Commonwealth Avenue across from Boston College in Brighton. According to a poster on Chowhound , Crazy Dough’s Pizza is looking to open next door to the Mexican restaurant (which opens today, by the way). Crazy Dough, which presently has locations in Harvard Square, Park Plaza, and the Back Bay, features three types of pizza–Sicilian, brick oven, and fire grilled.

Bus2Antarctica Video: Coping with Penguin Addiction

We have a sneaking suspicion that Andrew Evans traveled the entire 10,000 miles by bus just to hang out with penguins. You don’t have to remind me: I know how lucky I am

Certified Open: Fatty ‘Cue is Open to the Public and Worth the Two Year Wait

Acting on some twitter intel last night, a group of Eater operatives in the vicinity of The Gutter in Williamsburg headed on down to South 6th Street to confirm that yes Zak Pelaccio’s Fatty ‘Cue quietly opened to the public last night, about six days ahead of schedule (or two years behind schedule, depending on who’s counting). Not only is it open, but it looks like it’s going to be the Southside neighborhood-maker many had hoped it would be. As with any early opening, the place was overstaffed—it seemed like 19 people said thank you and goodbye on the way out—and just about every server was on his game (extra points to the guy in the “Bloggers Suck” t-shirt)

My Backyard Airport

My backyard is as busy as an international airport, but thankfully, not as noisy. As I prune back some of the winter-ravaged plants, I am surrounded by this flying traffic of bumble bees, honey bees, butterflies, humming birds, wrens, thrushes, and (my favorites) dragonflies.
