The Great Midwest and Hoover’s Legacy

I’m spending a weekend in the great midwest, while my wife has a reunion with her high school friends in Chicago. Whenever I travel I am amazed at all our country has to offer and proud of the role airports play in that

@bostonlogan: Way To Go With Twitter

@bostonlogan: Way To Go With Twitter It’s unlikely the Boston Red Sox will make first place this year, but the city’s airport has. Complex, maddening to navigate, and a traffic nightmare, Boston’s Logan International Airport can at least brag that it has more followers (4000) on Twitter than any other major airport in the country, and is second only to much smaller Richmond International (Virginia) with 6000 And that’s good news considering the social networking team that runs the show at Logan consists of only 5 probably manic stalwarts who believe that social media makes happy airports, which make for happy travelers, which in turn generates more money for the airport and Mass Port which runs the place @bostonlogan will get you Twitter answers to anything from flight cancellations and airfare sales to information about book signings and Christmas carolers. Boston.com , the web site of the Boston Globe, also reports that the team spends a lot of time with people tweeting from the airport who are looking for the lost and found or simply want to celebrate having found a parking space, a major accomplishment at Logan

Big Papi’s Grille May Be Coming to Boston

A popular Red Sox slugger who opened a restaurant west of Boston a year ago is apparently looking to open a new spot in the city. According to the Boston Herald, David Ortiz and the business partners involved with Framingham’s Big Papi’s Grille have been looking around the Back Bay and downtown Boston for a possible location for a second restaurant, and may indeed be close to coming to terms on a spot. The Herald mentions that the search for a second Big Papi’s Grille comes on the heels of a some changes to both the menu and the atmosphere of the original restaurant, which is located on Route 9 in Framingham.

Suing Palm Beach Airport: This Just Trumps It All

Recently, an NATA member brought to my attention that Donald Trump is suing Palm Beach County, Florida, over the development of a new runway at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) that would have commercial aircraft fly over his estate in Mar-a-Lago .  The irony here is so thick that I don’t even know where to begin.  Without researching this, I will jump to the safe conclusion that the airport has been around a lot longer than Mr. Trump and his palace in Mar-a-Lago.  As someone who owns (and is desperately trying to sell, from the sound of it) a 1968 Boeing 727 (not the quietest or most fuel-efficient aircraft) that has flown in and out of PBI any number of times, Mr

Zaps in Allston Has Apparently Closed

It looks like a quick-food dining spot in Allston that featured Polish sandwiches has closed its doors. According to a poster on the Chowhound site, Zaps on Brighton Avenue has had a “Closed for Renovations” sign up for awhile. A check on the restaurant’s website shows that it no longer exists, and a call placed to the spot indicated that their phone has been disconnected

Great Trek (Part Two) (22/365)

I write this from my office chair; while waiting for the 300+ emails to download. From this you may deduce that I got back safely! I am tired and stiff (aeroplane seats are not good for me) but happy to be home. The trip started out uneventfully.

Planes get in line at JFK

We all associate airports with waiting and delay. A nontrivial part of that delay at some busy airports is sitting on a plane that creeps toward along a taxiway for a chance to use the runway. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a new way of managing that line at New York’s John F

Thinking outside the box

This past week I took a much needed fun in the sun trip to Las Vegas.  Sittin’ poolside sipping Margaritas was just the remedy I needed after four months of nonstop work.  As I was getting off the plane trying to decide which bathing suit I would sport first, I noticed plexiglass cases displaying aviation memorabilia and was completely shocked.  The next photo shoot I’m working on is a futuristic military concept that displays male military figures in the exact same display cases!  Before I left, I was looking for an example to send my photographer and I couldn’t find anything.  Then, right there, as I was on my way to the desert sun, they were!  I immediately whipped out my camera and started to dodge travelers trying to take the shots.  Who would have thought I would find the example I was looking for in an airport?  Now that’s thinking outside the box.

Bells at Killcare

For some reason this post slipped my mind and I totally forgot about it over the last few months.  In March, we took a short vacation up to the Central Coast of New South Wales and stayed at a place called “Bells at Killcare.  It’s one of those places that offer boutique hotel accommodation and a one chef’s hat restaurant thanks to the scrumptious cuisine of Stefano Manfredi.  The prices aren’t particularly cheap (around $250-$300 a night) but they have several different types of packages that can help you save money if you bundle the accommodation with food and other services.

Flight Club: Getting Over Fear at 37,000 Feet
