Why use a travel agent today?

I get this question all the time and mostly in a some sort of phrasing that implies that my chosen business and career is dead and how can I possibly stay in business with Expedia, Orbitz, hotels.com, and a number of other internet sites you can book yourself. When was the last time you saw a travel agency in the mall, a strip center, or in an office building?  Most have gone out of business because they did not change their business model to reflect the growing need of vacation personalization and continued to rely on walk in business and referrals, but did not give the service to go along with it. At most travel agent seminars, conventions, classes, and events, I am surrounded by agents who are on average 50-70 years old who are ornery and bitter because the travel business has changed, technology has become more and more important, and clients just aren’t coming back in droves because they don’t have to!  Travel agents used to be the only source for airline tickets, European tours, cruises, etc.

A glimpse at Rotterdam

Rotterdam Just an hour from Amsterdam, Rotterdam sometimes gets billed as a “second city,” but this old-world-meets-modern-metropolis marches to the techno beat of its very own electronic drum. Futuristic and edgy, this Netherlands gem capitalizes on a courageous local art scene and hosts the Rotterdam Film Festival each year at the end of January

Deathwatch: SD26

This pick is an obvious but painful one. Obvious because SD26 is just so wrong on so many levels. It’s like grandpa trying to go to the nightclub, this old respected but perhaps fading San Domenico trying so desperately to be modern with a giant new space, Euro beats in the sleek wine lounge, an electronic wine list, and artsy lighting structures

Taking it to the Streets: Batali’s Workers Up the Ante with Del Posto Protest

A tipster happened upon the above scene in front of Del Posto about an hour ago, noting that the campaign is being run by the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York, a group that represents workers. All restaurants in the Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich restaurant group, including Del Posto and Babbo, have been hit with a lawsuit that alleges the two committed labor violations. Bastianich has said the suit has no merit and that they will fight it to the end

Reckless Rumormongering: Can Keith McNally Succeed Where Bobo and Pieces Failed?

When the original Community Board 2 agenda was released last week, Bobo’s Carlos Suarez was on the docket once again to obtain a beer and wine license (last time it was full booze) for the old Village Paper store space on 10th and Greenwich. Now, that item is gone , and word on the street is it’s because the landlord has signed a lease with someone else. The landlord told Eater yesterday that indeed a lease was just signed but wouldn’t unveil the identity of the mystery party.

Video: Paris in August

“The Eiffel Tower pulses like a nagging cell phone, weekday traffic on Place de la Concorde snarls and honks, sidewalks along Rue de Rivoli resemble ant colonies, cafés jam and jangle, waiters frazzle, market vendors push and pull, hawkeyes snag park chairs. . . . Every week of the year I pray for Sunday

The Hokey Pokey, Bingo, and other daily surprises

Living in Thailand, it’s often easier to post about the traditional ceremonies I take part in or interesting places I visit than it is to reflect on why I moved to Southeast Asia in the first place. Today I thought it would be good to share some of the daily experiences with my students, especially since the time in which I have to do so is quickly winding down. It is hard to believe that ten months ago today I began my journey, parting ways with my parents at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee to meet who I now refer to as my WorldTeach family in Los Angeles for our departure flight
