Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies.
Where to begin? I’d like to think the reason I haven’t updated in a while is because the “y” and “h” keys on my keyboard are missing, and as such I have to press little tiny knobules–yes, knobules… almost like descendants of Romulans… but not, because knobules refer to a physical object and Romulans refer to a SciFi race…perplexing!–a task in and of itself completely annoying. But, as honesty is sometimes the best policy (though it is my argument that honest is definitely not always the best policy, but that’s another subject entirely), I will own up to the fact that lack of actual content is due to a combination of pure exhaustion and warranted laziness.

Hanalei Heaven
I’ve been to several of the Hawaiian Islands, but Kauai is in a league of its own. Last month my husband and I got the joy of experiencing the island, and of course its food. We made a mission out of finding the “best of” spots for food during our entire trip. Here’s a run-down of places and dishes that made our favorites list: Our favorite “Hawaiian Plate” establishment, where they serve traditional lau lau , kalua pork and poke to-go, was on the south side of the island. Located in the small town of Koloa, on the end of the street you’ll find Koloa Fish Market .

Needing new Chang Angle, Bon Ap Creates Comic Strip
ChangWorld : Momofuku mastermind David Chang is in the September issue of Bon Ap (hits stands August 11 and online next week) trying to sell some of those shiny new Momo cookbooks . Since the man is no stranger to print mags, teevee, award shows, and the like, the BA people came up with a new angle: comic books! In the successive frames, the Chang explains how the egg/caviar dish at Ko came to be , throwing a recipe up there for good measure. The story is pretty basic, but the illustrations are worth a look (and good luck to the home cook who attempts the recipe at home)

Day 8, a look back at the weekend
Last weekend, Laurel’s good friend from college, Julianna, took the bus down to DC from New York to spend the weekend with us. We met her in Dupont Circle at one of the last stops for the so-called “Chinatown Bus”, then walked to Hank’s Oyster Bar , a little place that Laurel and I found the first time I visited her back here. It’s right off of one DC’s main drags, surrounded by steakhouses and standard-looking Italian joints. I love it: great outdoor seating, stellar food (including lots of seasonal specials featuring local produce and seafood), friendly servers, all at a very reasonable (for DC) price. Top dish: baby octopus salad, with sweet corn…. Damn. Just drew a blank on the rest of the dish, but I remember really enjoying it. Bonus dish: complementary hunks of chocolate served in lieu of dessert.

Eating out in Singapore
Singapore is just about the most culturally diverse destination in the world which means that when you go out to eat, your choices are almost limitless. Singapore is rich in Chinese, Malay, Indian and European cuisine. Fast food is the name of the game on the street and in hawker centres. Not the international fast-food franchisees you find in most big cities, many are mom & pop shops that serve a very limited menu but serve it extremely well and with little wait. Lavish restaurants of every kind and local specialties found in the many bars and clubs round out the offerings
