Start as we mean to go on – wine anyone? — Nelson, South Island, New Zealand

Jump to the full entry & travel map Nelson, South Island, New Zealand We left Abel Tasman and took the short drive to Nelson to pick up a Frisbee (Nic’s flatmate from Uni) who is now living in NZ and was spending a weeks holiday with us. We drove to the airport where he was flying in from Tauranga via Wellington. His plane arrived on time and after finding our way out of the maze that was Nelson airport we were on our way.

Preparations — Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Jump to the full entry & travel map Boston, Massachusetts, United States So true to form. I’ve been running around this last week trying to complete everything I put on my ‘Must-Do’ list; and with only two days left, I’m feeling fairly confident that, yes, I will complete all tasks as assigned! However, I do have one (minor) concern at this point: I left getting my visa for entry into Indonesia ’til the last minute! Although, when I called the Consulate this evening (yep, after 5pm), the gentleman on the other end was gracious and helped me somewhat. I have to call back Monday morning (yep, the 16th, the day I’m leaving) to see if we can remedy my forgetfulness here or in-country (they allow on-arrival visas, thankfully!)

Another Crazy Friday Night

Today my friends and I met up for tea at the Tudor House  in Santa Monica to celebrate a birthday.  I have been coming to this place for years and I love it because it’s totally cute in a shabby chic English sort of way.  Okay so it’s not Fortnum and Mason but I also don’t have to save up for 2 weeks to afford a scone.  You can’t have everything I guess.  I had a ton of work to do before heading out for tea at 12:30 but I left my place at noon and figured I’d have more than enough time to get to Santa Monica.  Unfortunately it seemed like everyone else was migrating to the beach for a spot of tea and traffic was hideous.  The worst part of all was the parking though.  I entered a parking structure who’s electronic sign informed me there were 181 available spaces but 10 minutes and 5 gallons of gas later I realized the sign was obviously malfunctioning.  Needless to say that I was a bit late after having to hike from a structure about a mile away from the restaurant.  It was worth it though because I had an excellent vanilla black tea and this: I am embarrassed to say I ate the entire thing.  Well not the butter but everything else.  Not quite what the English had in mind when they thought up tea time, right?  At least I ate this over the course of 3 hours.  Not that it really matters but it makes me feel a bit less like a hog so I thought I’d add that in. Afterwards I picked Maya up from school and took her to the park in an effort to burn off some of her crazy energy.   She practiced her moves for her future career as a Cirque de Soleil performer: The girl in the pink is Maya’s new best friend Lucy.  I think that at this point Lucy’s parents were surreptitiously moving her away because they were concerned Maya’s energy was contagious.  Or they thought Maya was nuts.  I’m not sure.  After a yummy sushi dinner I am now home at 8:45 on a Friday night.  I’m about to settle in with a DVR’d Top Chef episode.  I might wrap things up with an episode of  20/20 if I can stay away until then.  Yup, just another wild and crazy night here.

World of Coca-Cola Squares Off With the 2 Year Old

I haven’t hung out with a 2 year old in quite awhile, so this visit is a steep learning curve for me! It takes twice as long to get ready to go somewhere, and if I ever thought that I got grumpy when I was hungry, well let me tell you, I have met my match…! After a very late start today we finally made it to the College Park MARTA station and successfully navigated the rail system and the streets of downtown Atlanta, finding our way eventually to World of Coca-Cola . With a fussy child in tow, we checked out the huge variety of artifacts – all kinds of Coke advertisements, paintings, platters, machines, cans and bottles, etc.

My Dirty Little Food Secret

I am one of the event organizers for the Food & Drink Fest …the Festival with Taste, which takes places annually in the spring.   This year we moved to the larger space of Copps Coliseum, Hamilton because the festival is expanding so quickly.  Boasting over 50 of the Hamilton-Halton & Niagara Regions’ top independent restaurants, over 35 local & international wineries, 25 craft breweries and dozens of spirits, liqueurs, bakeries and gourmet foods; the Food & Drink Fest is Southern Ontario’s Meca of all things gourmet food and drink.  My Dirty Little Secret: Despite being in the driver’s seat of the region’s largest culinary event, I can’t cook to save my life. Up until this point, I really could care less if I could cook.  Throughout university I lived on coffee, veggies, chocolate, peanut butter and more coffee, so cooking wasn’t a necessity.  However; once I started working fulltime at Beau Monde Productions (the company that produces Food & Drink Fest), my foodie boss introduced me to the wonderful world of actual food and suddenly peanut butter just wasn’t cutting it anymore (unless of course it is used in a Chicken Stir-fry with peanut sauce over wild rice. Yum!).

Zeep, automatic flushing toilets and Friday the 13th

Last night, I came home to new music.  Yesss! The band: Zeep .  The album: People & Things .  They’re a duo with roots in Brasil and Germany, and their sound is a little Brazilian, a bit tropical and a tad sweet.  Listening to the album, I want to drink sangria or smoke out of a hookah.  The upside of being with someone for 12 years: They can buy you an album after hearing one song and know you’ll like it – and you do.  Happy, happy; joy, joy.
