Movie Monday – November 30 – Comet to Jo’Burg
In the ever growing list of “Things Aviation Geeks Love” , combining airline nostalgia, classic route structures, new aircraft, trip reports and complex accident investigations might put this week’s Movie Monday close to the top of my favorites. The first half of this classic news reel from the earliest days of commercial jet travel chronicles the May 1952 London to Johannesburg flight (via Rome, Beirut, Khartoum, Entebbe, Livingstone ) of the De Havilland Comet 1 (G-ALYP) on the British Overseas Airways Corporation

The Powow River Grille in Amesbury Is Closing
A riverside restaurant north of Boston that features an eclectic mix of ethnic dishes and comfort food will soon be closing. According to the Daily News of Newburyport, the Powow River Grille in Amesbury will close its doors at the end of 2009 after being in business for about five years. The owners of the restaurant (who also own the Plum Island Grille on nearby Plum Island) are apparently closing the Powow River Grille because one of the owners is looking at some type of new business venture.

Making a U Turn for Cafe Antigua Guatemala
You know how you have one of those days when you rush to get to an appointment only to find out that you got the times mixed up and are actually early? So now you have time to kill and then you realize that you’re also hungry? What’s a girl to do, except look for some place to have lunch, so I decide to take a drive and tell myself to stop at the first place that looks interesting.

Chasing the clues: 787 static tests underway?
Boeing has publicly said that static testing on ZY997 to validate the 787 wing fix would begin in late November. Well, it’s late November and Matt Cawby’s KPAE blog that closely tracks the goings-on at the company’s Everett facility posted a small item that has attracted quite a bit of attention: A wing load test on the static test 787 in the 40-23 began at 4:30 PM today and was completed at 7:20 PM. Second test scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM.

Beacon Grille to Open in Woburn This Winter
A new casual high-end restaurant and bar will soon be opening in Woburn. According to the restaurant’s website and Facebook page, the Beacon Grille is looking to open at the TradeCenter complex just north of Route 128 possibly as early as January of 2010. Holiday Travel Tip#2 – Pick the right day to travel
According to a recent Frommer’s article , holiday airfare is even lower than last year what with the dramatic slump in the economy. However, according to experts at Priceline and Bing Travel, prices may be on the rise. Last year “the airlines ran fare sales right into the holidays to spur demand. This year, we’re not likely to see a repeat

A Turbulent Flight
There are certain books that begin with a great premise and a great main character but which are simply unable to deliver on the promise of a well-told story. This is one of those books. This 303-page tale of a modern airline traveler loses its interest, its energy and its wings at about the 200-page mark. From then on, the engines are stalled and the story glides awkwardly to a crash landing on a foam-filled runway. Up in the Air is the story of Ryan Bingham, a so-called Career Transition Counselor, who is hired to help downsizing companies get rid of employees without having them go postal. Bingham must be part psychologist, part upward mobility trainer and – to a large part – a fraudulent New Age guru who’s supposed to convince the terminated workers that its all for the best. Of course, Bingham (who views himself as a type of glorified and special purpose accountant) never has to stick around to view the actual damage – the failed marriages, lost homes and suicides. He convinces himself that he does more good than harm as he flies every day or two on Great West Airlines circa 2001. As we meet the not-t00-likeable and self-absorbed Bingham, he’s submitted his resignation because he is about to accomplish the main goal of his life. His primary objective is to be the tenth person in the domestic carrier’s history who has flown 1,000,000 miles without leaving the U.S. Bingham travels so much that he has no home or apartment, he lives in the thin atmosphere land he calls “Airworld.” There’s a lot of inside baseball talk that frequent flyers and frequent lodging chain sleepers will find entertaining… For example, there’s much debate about the merits of Hilton-owned Hampton Inns versus Marriott Courtyards. Which one is the best base for corporate warriors, and why is it that a traveler feels almost invisible at the larger Marriott and Hilton properties? (And why is it that frequent travelers come to need Sound Soothers to sleep?) Bingham also has this marvelous machine called the Hand Star, the apparent precursor of today’s BlackBerry smartphone.

Latest Review: Picco Restaurant, Boston
The latest review on the Boston’s Hidden Restaurants Web site is Picco , a restaurant in the South End of Boston that features pizza and homemade ice cream. Located on Tremont Street in the heart of the South End neighborhood, Picco is a fairly small dining spot with a funky retro look that includes a soda fountain and a decent-sized outdoor dining area in the warmer months. While the restaurant is known mostly for its pizza and ice cream, it also offers soups, salads, sandwiches, calzones, and pasta dishes as well.
