Come Fly With Me…

Writings from the airport – I’m staring out through the windows at the B1 terminal in  Charleston Yeager Airport from WV.  It is literally the smallest airport in the world as security is an inch away from terminal A and B with terminal C located down a flight of steps.  I do not check luggage. I travel with a large carry on which always includes at least six pairs of shoes, a pound of skincare and a million things I never wear.

Video: 787 makes chilly engine restart

Around 9:30 PT last night, ZA001, parked in Stall 105 on Boeing’s Everett flight line, restarted its twin Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The engines were started left to right and each produced clouds of white smoke as a result of an inhibitor that was stored inside each engine while the aircraft’s side-of-body was being modified, says engine-maker Rolls-Royce. The twin-power plants were run for roughly 45 minutes at idle as part of last night’s tests.

Crux Vaticana on Display at St. Peter’s Basilica

After a year and a half at work, the Vatican has just finished restoration of a jewel-encrusted golden cross said to be the oldest reliquary of its kind, according to USA TODAY . The foot-tall, jewel-encrusted, golden cross, known as the Crux Vaticana , was given to the people of Rome by the Byzantine emperor Justin II in the 6th-century and bears the inscription “With the wood with which Christ conquered man’s enemy, Justin gives his help to Rome and his wife offers the ornamentation.” The reliquary is said to contain pieces of the cross on which Jesus was crucified, hence its longstanding reverence by the Catholic church

After two long years, first flight countdown begins again for 787

While Boeing crunches the data from the latest volley of static tests to validate the side-of-body reinforcement, sources within the company are increasingly confident that the long-delayed program could fly not one, but potentially two 787s later this month. A static test yesterday, internally dubbed “2C” , was a key hurdle on the now restarted path to 787 first flight. Boeing will review the data between now and December 9th to formally validate the side-of-body reinforcement and provide a green-light for first flight.

Photo Report – Big(ger) GA Birds at Pleso (LDZA)

By me All photos me too, copyrighted In another run through my database (lost count of them all ), I’ve seen I’ve got quite a few interesting shots from Pleso airport, our big bad international gateway (for our GA expectations anyway ). Having often selflessly volunteered to fly there for fuel once our own station at Lučko closes for the day, I’ve had the chance to spend some quality time on the GA apron, snapping a few shots here and there while waiting for the bowser to trundle up

Sal’s Pizza to Open in Norwell

About two weeks after reporting on a new Sal’s Pizza opening up in Woburn, we have just learned that yet another location of this rapidly-growing chain of pizza places and Italian restaurants is going to be opening, this one south of Boston. According to a job posting on the Craigslist site, Sal’s will be opening on Grove Street in Norwell (at the Route 53 intersection), a short distance south of the Hingham line. Sal’s Pizza (and its sister restaurants Mary’s Pasta and Sandwiches and Salvatores Italian Restaurant) are mostly located north of Boston, with no locations on the South Shore at the present time, so when it opens, the new Sal’s in Norwell will indeed be the first time many South Shore residents get to try the chain’s popular 19-inch pizzas and 1-pound calzones.

Cruising again!

Hi everyone! Well I will be leaving on Saturday, December 5 and flying to Fort Lauderdale. Staying overnight at the Comfort Inn South Cruiseport for the night and then will hop their shuttle to Miami to catch NCL’s Jewel for a week-long cruise to the Western Caribbean.  Will be visiting Roatan, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; Costa Maya, Mexico and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas before heading back to Miami.  Just checked the weather and it looks like rain again… Rain and cruising just seems to go together for me! Hopefully, I will be able to blog this time while I’m on my trip.  I really want to be able to give you an idea of what it’s like to cruise, if you’ve never been on a cruise.  This time we will have a Veranda (balcony) cabin – looking forward to that.  Will post videos of the room and the ship for you to see.  This is the ship that we will be cruising on: The rest of this week will be taken up with getting ready for the cruise… getting the house in order, washing clothes, packing… all the fun stuff.  So will talk to you on Saturday when we get to Fort Lauderdale!
