Japanese Dining Sun #2
I was lured back for desserts by the seasonal Hokkaido menu (ongoing till January). Because I love pumpkin, I like the idea of a homemade pumpkin tiramisu ($6.50++). But the real thing was far from what I imagined it to be and I didn’t like it at all. Texture was coarse, flavour was so weird that I don’t know how to describe it! And the sweetness of pumpkin was sorely missing

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things
Today’s post is inspired by the always awesome M of Travel, Eat, Love, who recently wrote a post about things she’s loving right now (she also just moved her blog over to her very own domain! Go check it out!). It made me think about some of my favorite food items and places, and given that it’s the end of year, a traditional time for lists and wrap-ups, I figured I’d steal her idea write my own list! Keep in mind that this is ever-changing; it’s just a sample of what I’m enjoying at the moment. Favorite snack: Lately I’ve been mixing either almonds or walnuts with dried cranberries.

Foster’s Market
Whenever I visit Linda in Durham, Foster’s Market is our go to place for brunch. Our usual plan is for one of us to get the omelet special, the other to get the chef’s special, and then split them so we each get a little of both dishes. Whenever I visit, which is about every 2-4 weeks, the specials are always different, so I’m not too sure how often they change, but it’s at least bi-weekly

Dieting Advice – The Day Off Diet Review
The Day Off Diet is quickly becoming one of the most popular diet programs available for instant download online and unlike more expensive programs like Weight Watchers, which requires a monthly payment, The Day Off Diet is available instantly upon a one time purchase. The main reason that The Day Off Diet is becoming so popular is not the fact that it’s available for download instantly, nor is it the fact that it’s far more affordable than most dieting alternatives, nor is it even the fact that The Day Off Diet is essentially free for the first 60 days due to it’s 100% money back guarantee

The Shutter: Silent H to Close This Month, May Reopen as New Concept
A tipster this morning sent a sad email revealing that Silent H , a solid Vietnamese restaurant and a nice option near the Bedford area in Williamsburg, is closing this month : “He has plans to reopen, but won’t be serving Vietnamese food. (I’ve heard it could be Mexican-inspired.) I was kind of surprised to hear the news considering the place has great reviews and was even showcased in the New York Times for its Vietnamese sandwiches.” Calls to the restaurant confirm it is closing and may reopen as a new concept, but we were unable to reach the owner, who knows the extent of the revamp. Make a visit while it’s still around.

Shack Attack!: A Closer Look at the New Manhattan Shake Shack Sites
Click the image above to view the full photogallery. Because the Times article and the subsequent press release just weren’t enough Shack Action, we sent an Eater operative to the newly unleashed Manhattan Shake Shack sites—what will be a one story building on 86th Street and Lexington and the ground floor of the InterContinental hotel being built on West 44th and 8th Ave—to get a look at the present status. Both are, of course, in raw plywood states as they’re set to open towards the middle of next year, but let the imagination take over here

Ionie’s Caribbean Kitchen, Grayson GA
Ionie’s Caribbean Kitchen is on the right as you head from Snellville towards Athens on 78, and it’s pretty darned close actually: perhaps 3-4 minutes past the Mellow Mushroom. This was one of those nights where my wife had to work late and I was tasked with feeding my daughter. I wanted something different so the idea was to travel east down 78 until we saw something new and interesting.

"Yumm Bowls" for Holiday Company
One of my favorite restaurants in Oregon is Cafe Yumm , one of the best spots for gluten-free vegetarian cuisine. This local buisness that has been around for 30 years now sells their sauce in the grocery store. Using the sauce makes a perfect quick meal for when you host company during the holidays. My mom and I recently made our own “Yumm Bowls” while hosting family, which consists of a bowl filled with rice, beans, the sauce and all the fixings pictured here.

Hotel Amenities: Wi-Fi, Plush Linens, Minibar, and ROCK STAR CHEF?
For lack of a better term – I am a “foodie.” I mean, who isn’t nowadays. Thanks to the success of Top Chef, Hell’s Kitchen , and the like, every Mac-N-Cheese eating, sugar cookie burning schmuck is ranting and raving about the stylistic approach to sous-vide cooking, idolizing celeb chefs like rock stars, and detailing the complexities of pork belly and bone marrow. (With that said, if you are yet to taste either the belly or marrow, you have my sympathy.) However, a great restaurant does more than just serve up good food, delivering a certain level of shock-and-awe, mesmerizing the guest and making them come back for more. Hmmm, sounds a lot like what a great hotel is supposed to do, right? For that reason, hotel restaurants are no longer a by-product of the hotel itself, but instead, a leading demand generator and a hotel marketers dream. I didn’t realize the marketing power of a great hotel restaurant until I spent time working at a Relais and Chateaux resort and restaurant in the British Virgin Islands

The Gatekeepers: Boqueria Soho’s General Manager Joel Steiger
This is The Gatekeepers, in which Eater roams the city meeting the fine ladies and gentlemen that stand between you and some of your favorite impossible-to-get tables. [ Krieger , 12/10/09] Building off of the success of the original Flatiron location, Chef Seamus Mullen and his team opened Boqueria Soho just over a year ago. Especially when compared to the tiny original spot, the Soho digs are bigger, flashier and she has a shiny open kitchen with a chefs counter to boot.

The Localist: Holiday Dining in Portland Neighborhoods
Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat… I really can’t tell you how much I love the holidays. Why I love it is easier to explain: twinkle lights and fir trees, dressing up for parties and, of course, food. The list could go on and on, but for the purposes of this article, let’s stick with food

Missing the regular dose of Top Chef recapper Max Silvestri now that the show has ended ? He’s over on the AV Club today praising bars with free pizza: “The pizzas may be small, and toppings are extra, but nothing sops up the ill effects of a pint of beer like 800 calories worth of pizza …it’s such a healthy way to drink!” [AV Club]

Retrospectives: Sutton: The 2009 Restaurant Scene Totally Sucked
While Bloomberg’s restaurant critic Ryan Sutton does name the top ten newcomers of the year in his end of ’09 summation , most of his piece focuses on what a dire time it was for the industry, how disappointed he was in new restaurants, in the untimely shutterings. ” This was the year of the mediocre opening and the high-profile closing

An Option To Dealing With Airline Luggage Systems
Let’s face it. There are those of us that have not mastered the art of packing “light”. It may be by choice, or it simply may be because we aren’t the most organized people in the world. Despite the public perception, and a spouse’s ridicule, there’s nothing wrong with that. When I pack, I have to go through every “what if” scenario that may cause me to need that extra piece of clothing or miscellaneous item. Will I need my baseball glove with? Probably not, but what if I’m staying at the same hotel as Johan Santana, and he needs to warm up his arm before a game? Nobody else is going to have a baseball glove, so before you know it, I’m playing catch with Johan Santana. What? It could happen. My point is that packing “heavy” is a reality for some of us, and making it from point “A” to point “B” with those mammoth bags can be an exhausting, nerve-racking, and costly experience. Should you be one of the unfortunate souls that never sees their bag again after you watch it trolley through the gates of the unknown, the trip you have spent days overpacking for becomes the dreaded worst case scenario. Fear not. Now, there is another option that can relieve some of the stress related to dealing with the airline baggage systems. If you haven’t heard of a company called Luggage Ahead , let me introduce you. Luggage Ahead will ship your luggage to your destination, allowing you to bypass the checking of bags and the hassles and frustrations of airline baggage processing. This service will pick up your luggage at your home or business prior to your trip, and deliver it safely to any U.S

Bisuteki Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar Is Open Once Again in Cambridge
Nearly three years after they closed, Bisuteki Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar has opened back up on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. Formerly located within the old Radisson Hotel (and one floor below the now-closed Greek restaurant Dionysos), Bisuteki recently opened in the same–albeit renovated–location within what is now a Courtyard by Marriott. The menu at Bisuteki has new items as well as old favorites, with sushi, hibachi dinners, and noodle dishes making up most of the menu, along with a variety of appetizers
