A gift from the Gods? Can the new Olympic Air achieve a herculean turnaround of a damaged brand?
When the latest incarnation of the Greece’s ‘Olympic’ finally left the ground on 1 October this year, what would the airline’s original founder Aristotle Onassis have been feeling had he been alive? Probably relief. For years the Greek government has been under pressure from EU regulators in Brussels to offload the loss making Olympic operation which was being kept barely alive by ongoing injections of subsidy long held illegal by the EU

Travel Accessories For Babies
The travel accessories for babies are so cute and adorable that some Mothers forget that they actually do serve a purpose. The parents of twins would simply be lost without a stroller built for two and every parent would be lost without a car seat that was built to fit the miniature size of the little person in their lives. Some of the travel accessories for babies can be used for years.

Airports: Armed and Ready for Snow
I’m writing this on Friday afternoon, as we who live in the D.C. area brace for what looks like the largest winter storm in many years. Even small amounts of snow cause great consternation in Washington as people flock to the store to buy enough provisions to withstand the siege of Stalingrad; large amounts will shut the place down for days. Good thing airports don’t run that way.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner finally takes flight
The next big thing in aviation took the skies on Tuesday, Dec. 15 – the much-anticipated 787 Dreamliner flight took off slightly before 10:30 a.m., making flight history with its inaugural flight . The Dreamliner’s test flight was repeatedly postponed over the past two years and while it won’t officially be available for commercial aviation until late 2011, the Boeing launched its maiden voyage and the first of what will be a long process of flight testing

Costa Maya Mexico – December 10, 2009 (Part 2)
Finally we arrive at the ruins. We get a 10 minute break to go to the bathroom, get water and you intend to video tape the ruins, pay for a permit. It is only a $4 charge so I go ahead and get my permit since I usually like to video tape as well as take pictures. We all meet and then it is on our way to the ruins. There is a quick stop for picture taking, something that is set up by the tour company probably to make a little extra money and then off to see the ruins close up. This is a small settlement and was just discovered recently. It is only about 35% excavated, but there is still a lot to see. Our first stop is at the first building and Diana gives us a lecture about the settlement and a history about the Mayan culture and how it relates to the other ruins that are in Belize and also near Cancun. We find out that she was one of the first tour guides for these ruins so we know that we are in good hands with her. There is plenty of time for pictures and then off to the other areas. We pass by one mound which they believe is part of a house but it has not been excavated yet so they will learn more once that is done, We circle around the one building and get to look at the other side and find an opening that is an entrance into the building. We are allowed to look in but can go no further. While there, Diana points out a chicle tree, which was chewed by the Mayans. This is also where ‘Chiclets’ gum originated… although they no longer use the chicle for the gum. She also points out what is thought to be the area where human sacrifices where done. She explains that it was an honor to be a sacrifice and that only the best were given that honor. We go a little further and come to an area that looks like it may have been a courtyard. There are steps everywhere that lead nowhere. Diana explains that this was the area where the houses were. They believe that the steps led to the houses of the different families. We walk a little further into the forest and come across a stone wall that is built into a hill. As you look up the hill, through the trees, you can see the top of another Mayan temple. We get more information and then are lead to 2 stairways. The first has 32 steps and it is quite steep. The second is 16 steps and looks easier to navigate. We are given the chance to climb up the stairs, but can also stay down below if you are unable to climb. I make it to the top of the 16 steps and it opens up to 2 large temples. They sit on top of the highest point in this area and there are no trees surrounding them. The Mayans picked this area because they believed that the sun was a god and they wanted to have their temples in an open area where there was lots of sun. At one point you could look out over the land and see fields and banana trees. It seems like you are on top of the world and looking down. We have come to the end of the tour and it is back to the area where we can again have a bathroom break, get some water and look at some wares that local merchants have for sale. After about 15 minutes it’s back on the bus for the trip back to Costa Maya. Our hosts are at the bus with water and soft drinks for us and then we are off. Once back on the road, Diana announces that it is siesta time so we can catch a short snooze on the way back to the ship

My Hero
Currently the hero of my life is taking care of the hero of my lifetime! Conrad Hilton and his staff around the world have been taking mighty good care of my husband Richard. Now, this man knew what he was doing when he started his hotel service program! I don’t know how the Hilton Hotel employees and their service “system” manage to do it so well, but they have customer service nailed. Over the past 10 years Richard has stayed almost exclusively in Hilton Hotels and usually comes back home with a good attitude partially because the hotel staff treated him well. “Thanks Conrad; you have made my life easier too!” There are not many service organizations that please us these days. I believe that there was a lot of emphasis on creating a good customer service experience back in the 1980s. For a short time it was noticed in a lot of consumer relationships. I remember purchasing my first computer and the great service that went into that sale. Surprise! I also remember buying a used car and getting terrific service during the sale. Most of that is long gone. Companies who had the word “service” in their corporate motto really didn’t mean it

Jump to the full entry & travel map Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand So after hopping from place to place on a pretty much daily basis i decided to have a rest and relax in Queenstown coz everyone told just how god damn good it is and they most definately weren’t lying! We stopped off at the first ever bungy site on the kawarau river where a few ppl were going to jump, by far the best was a member of team Sweden who when jumped decided not to put his chin on his just and face planted into the water…what makes it so funny?? the fact that for the next week his eyes were bruised and looked like he was wearing eyeliner whilst also looking a bit like a dalmation! On arrival first things first you have to go for the famous Fergburger, its almost a religious ritual for when you get to Queenstown and after sampling more than half the menu its clear why, from the little lamby to the big al all the way to cockadoodle oink…each one unique and ore inspiring who cares about their weight anyway! So we took our Fergs and went and sat down by the lake beer in hand looking across the water to the snow capped mountain range…hard life i know! check out …..www.fergburger.com First night out is a big night out with free and cheap drinks and the backpacker haven that is Altitude and World bar which has a strange consept of puttin alcoholic beverages in teapots and then given u a shot glass and away you go

Burmese Days — Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar
Jump to the full entry & travel map Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar Flight was delayed and our bags were last off the plane so we were delighted to see a boy with my name on the sign and to have a room on arrival at the Motherland Guesthouse. Unfortunately it took more than an hour to get our air/con working and I was less than thrilled that we didn’t have separate beds – but that old age for you.

Sam goes Mining — Potosi, Bolivia
Jump to the full entry & travel map Potosi, Bolivia While I spent a leisurely morning in the town Sam visited the Potosi Silver Mine with some of the tour group. He will need to tell you about the mine so I will try and persuade him to write an entry but in the meantime I will post a few pictures of Miner Sam. The following is a very late update by Sam who has been enjoying his holiday too much to stop and write… The Mining Tour stated with getting kitted out in house near our hotel – boots, hardhats and attractive yellow suits, I had to lift the trousers up (Simon Cowl style) because the one size fits all was a little tall for me!! Next stop was the miners market where we were taken to buy presents for the miners – we had the choice of tobacco, soft drinks, chocolate, coca leaves (legal only in Bolivia), 95% alcohol drink that came in plastic bottles and of course dynamite and fuses (just your typical Tesco supplies)

How the rich live! — Ahipara, North Island, New Zealand
Jump to the full entry & travel map Ahipara, North Island, New Zealand Well, I reckon we are about as close as we can to living like the rich, we have beach front, 5* accommodation in paradise, miles from anywhere, spending each day as we please! We have been on a coach tour to the tip of the North Island and then drove back along the beach – fab! We sand boarded – awesome – would have had two goes if we could have managed the walk up the dune!! and ended the day drinking wine and star gazing! Day two; main event – Kayaking – no photographic or video proof – but if we did have – it would have made us millions.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Beijing, Beijing, China Today was a very early start compared to my last few leisurely days. Rebecca and I were going skiing! Skiing is my favourite sport, and I look forward to every winter when we go away to Thredbo to ski. We had to catch the same bus and train as we did to get to the university, but as we were travelling at peak hour, the traffic was worse.
