Week in Reviews: Sam Sifton Awards a Onespot to the Breslin

[ Horine , 10/19/09] This morning, Sam Sifton awards one star to Ken Friedman and April Bloomfield’s The Breslin, a heavy two and a half month old gastropub in the Ace Hotel . As usual, the Siftonator uses romance as a rubric here. But instead of comparing food to kissing, as he’s done in the past, now the Breslin is a date he doesn’t want to end.

Suvarhabhumi Airport

Lagerlad loves Suvarnabhumi Airport! Having recently survived the horrors of Heathrow and LAX, the Lagerlad has had it with airports in the west! Yes, its had its fair share of technical dramas but there’s something to be said about the scale and ambition of the architecture that envelopes this outstanding facility. Suvarnabhumi is what an airport should LOOK and FEEL like!

Indian Fusion Food at Cowboys and Turbans

For the past several months, Asian-Mexican fusion dining has been all over town, from Kogi BBQ, a food truck to Red Hot Kitchen , a brick and mortar restaurant. The flavor profiles have been geared primarily towards Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese Cuisines; however, India is also a part of Asia, albeit South Asia and guess what?

My new hip and a whole body scanner

Flew back home Monday from Indianapolis and, of course, the hip set off the metal detector.  So, I was invited to step into a body scanner they have there.  The whole thing went smoothly, they got the green light signaling that I was ok, and off I went.  The checkpoint at Indy is pretty roomy, so they have space for the machines and it worked great.   A TSA employee, shown from the back, as he stands in an airport whole-body imaging machine. My wife was also invited to use the machine, though she has her original hips.  She also reports that it was a good experience, especially when I explained that the images are viewed by someone who cannot see her and they are not stored.  Feeling secure is very important to her, and she is someone who has good old middle American common sense.  So, the scanner machines passed the “Ann Principato test,” a tough test indeed.  (Yes, I know, some of you can’t believe that I passed her test.)  I can also tell you that the concessions program in Indy’s new terminal is terrific.  We patronized Wolfgang Pucks, Borders, Relay and the spa they have right next to the popcorn stand.  We have also previously eaten at Champs.  Very nice, passenger friendly, terminal

Old Jamaican in the Caribbean Sea

Old Jamaican in the Caribbean Sea is a post from: Jamaica Vacations Here is a wonderful set of photos taken from the Negril Cliffs which features one of my favorite Jamaican fisherman out in the early morning as the sun rises on yet another beautiful Jamaica day. I watched this guy fish the local waters off and on for over a year before I settled to take his photo without his permission. I probably could have found him and asked him for it but it was nice to chat with him as he went on about his day completely oblivious to me while I sat and watched him from the seaside cliffs of a Negril resort in amazement at his strength and determination.

Fall Tracking: Pulino’s Pizzeria Now Shooting for a Late February Opening

Pulino’s in earlier plywood days A stop by Keith McNally’s newest project Pulino’s Bar & Pizzeria this morning revealed the plywood shed is, in typical McNally style, locked up tight…like Fort Knox tight. But since chef Nate Appleman is twittering away about testing pizza doughs , searching for wood oven suppliers, and picking gelato, there’s gotta be something going on in there. And yes there is
