Earthquake Devastates Haiti
A massive earthquake of 7.0 on the Richter scale shook Haiti Tuesday just before 5 p.m. The epicenter of the strike-slip type of quake was just ten miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The construction of most buildings in the region was poorly regulated and many of the impoverished residents’ tin-roofed shacks teetered on steep ravines, making them especially vulnerable.

Renewals: Koi Abandons Bowery Plans, Re-signs at Bryant Park Hotel
After making a splashy move from the West Coast into the Bryant Park Hotel, the celeb and expense account friendly Koi grew a bit weary of their midtown locale. As their original lease began to wind down , the Koi team targeted a big move to the new restaurant row on the Bowery and made plans to purchase the current Salvation Army building and transform it into a three story den of sushi debauchery . Knowing that they would be facing an uphill battle with the Community Board, Koi attempted to conduct outreach to key members in order to get their buy in before licensing meeting

The Shutter: Date is Set for Shutter of 22 Year-old Telephone Bar & Grill
At last month’s Community Board 3 meeting, Mitchell Banchik, the owner of Jake’s Dilemma, Down The Hatch, and The Gin Mill, got the go ahead for a transfer of ownership at the current Telephone Bar & Grill space. So it’s sad but not surprising to hear that the 22 year-old bar will be closing by the end of this month. Though the bar could hardly be called a go-to spot, it was a fixture of sorts in the neighborhood.

The Endangered Veggie Restos: NYPress argues that with the rising…
NYPress argues that with the rising availability of humanely raised meat more and more New York vegans and vegatarians are switching back to meat eating and “conscientious carnivorism. ” And that’s one of the reasons why vegetarian staple Red Bamboo in Fort Greene went to the meat: “I know what the neighborhood wants and the restaurant needs to make money. It [dietary trends] has been my demographic for 15 years, and I have seen it change from vegetarian, to vegan and then back to meat.” [NYPress]

Life Images: Back When Flying Was Fun
With all the recent concerns about the latest round of changes from TSA, we can’t help but long for the good old days of flying, back before we had to take off our shoes and belts and jackets, empty our pockets, pay exorbitant fees for extra luggage, and worry that full body scans would somehow fall into the wrong hands.
