My Dirty Little Food Secret
I am one of the event organizers for the Food & Drink Fest …the Festival with Taste, which takes places annually in the spring. This year we moved to the larger space of Copps Coliseum, Hamilton because the festival is expanding so quickly. Boasting over 50 of the Hamilton-Halton & Niagara Regions’ top independent restaurants, over 35 local & international wineries, 25 craft breweries and dozens of spirits, liqueurs, bakeries and gourmet foods; the Food & Drink Fest is Southern Ontario’s Meca of all things gourmet food and drink. My Dirty Little Secret: Despite being in the driver’s seat of the region’s largest culinary event, I can’t cook to save my life. Up until this point, I really could care less if I could cook. Throughout university I lived on coffee, veggies, chocolate, peanut butter and more coffee, so cooking wasn’t a necessity. However; once I started working fulltime at Beau Monde Productions (the company that produces Food & Drink Fest), my foodie boss introduced me to the wonderful world of actual food and suddenly peanut butter just wasn’t cutting it anymore (unless of course it is used in a Chicken Stir-fry with peanut sauce over wild rice. Yum!).

Zeep, automatic flushing toilets and Friday the 13th
Last night, I came home to new music. Yesss! The band: Zeep . The album: People & Things . They’re a duo with roots in Brasil and Germany, and their sound is a little Brazilian, a bit tropical and a tad sweet. Listening to the album, I want to drink sangria or smoke out of a hookah. The upside of being with someone for 12 years: They can buy you an album after hearing one song and know you’ll like it – and you do. Happy, happy; joy, joy.

Jump to the full entry & travel map Foz de Iguacu, State of Parana, Brazil From Paraty we took our first overnight bus to the Iguassu Falls, on the border of Brazil – Argentina and Paraguay. Not the best nights sleep we’d ever had but well worth the journey when we got to the falls. The first afternoon we spent on the Brazilian side, which has the best views and various viewing platforms and trails, and the 2nd day we spent on the Argentinian side which was absolutely amazing

The Origins of Friday the 13th
The third and last Friday the 13th of 2009 is upon us, so we thought we’d try to get to the bottom of why this day is feared by some 17-21 million Americans (as estimated by the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute ). Paraskevidekatriaphobia, the scientific term for fear of Friday the 13th, is an amalgam of superstition and old wives’ tales having to do with Friday–a day some claim Jesus was crucified as it was the Romans’ execution day, or when Eve ate that darn apple, when Adam and Eve were thrown out of the Garden of Eden or even the day that Noah’s Great Flood began (which is unlikely as Friday didn’t exist way back then)–and the number 13.

EVOO to Move from Somerville to Kendall Square in Cambridge
A rumor that we had heard earlier this fall about EVOO in Somerville seems to have some substance, as the Boston on the Go blog mentions that the restaurant will indeed be moving from Somerville to Kendall Square in Cambridge. The article states that EVOO will likely make the move from Beacon Street near the Cambridge border to 350 Third Street in Kendall Square in February of 2010. Boston on the Go also reports that they will be sharing the new Kendall Square space with a second location of Za, an upscale Arlington pizza spot.

Lord Hobo is Opening in Cambridge This Weekend
The highly-anticipated opening of a restaurant and bar in Cambridge is finally about to become reality. According to their website, Lord Hobo will be opening this coming Sunday (November 15) on Hampshire Street near the edge of Kendall Square where the offbeat and eclectic B-Side Lounge used to be. Lord Hobo looks to be a beer bar, with a large number of high-quality beers both on tap and in bottles (the owner of Lord Hobo also runs the Moan and Dove, a popular beer bar in Amherst), but the place will also offer gastropub-style food, including such dishes as fried oysters, lobster macaroni and cheese, truffle chips, hanger steak and fries, homemade gnocchi, saffron risotto paella, and seared cod

A New Way to Get Your Kicks on Route 66
To many people, the old Route 66 represents the romance of the open road. Even though it was replaced with modern highways and officially decommissioned in 1985, this 2,400-mile stretch of road from Chicago to Los Angeles continues to have many of the one-of-a-kind motels, cafés, and other landmarks that sprung up during the Mother Road’s heyday. To help locate those attractions, the National Park Service has launched an online Discover Our Shared Heritage travel itinerary on Route 66

Padmaverse: Pregnant Padma Interviews for New Job on 30 Rock
To give the nation a little of taste of the acting chops and luminous beauty we can all expect from her new sitcom debut (working name, Single Serving), Padma Lakshmi made a cameo on 30 Rock last night as the prospective host of Jack’s new talk show Dealbreakers. Either that or it was just another TV appearance to promote her pregnancy . It was not as epic as her defining role in Glitter , not as indie as her part in the Eels’ music video, a B+ effort all around really, but the clip is worth a look.

Don’t cry for me Argentina! — Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina
Jump to the full entry & travel map Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina OMG! This place is amazing! Greeted like not-so-minor royalty by the general manager we were quickly introduced to our charming butler (yes, butler…) on arrival. People on either side pressed cards into my sweaty palm (it is 29 degrees out!) with a breathless “should you need anything…” or “if we can make you any more welcome…” For some reason, these lovely people were and are under the illusion I’m some kind of VIP.
