Seven Days and Counting!

As of today we have officially hit the one week till take off mark, and whew, what a crazy past few months I have had!  For those of you visiting this blog for the first time, I have been in the process of planning a 9 month trip to Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East for the past year or so.  While I have traveled extensively in the past, including a couple of five monthers, this will be the longest to date.  Due to the fact that the first half of the trip is purely for pleasure and the second for my thesis research, the logistics of everything have been crazy.  To top it all off, my good buddy is getting married in Thailand, yes the very same Thailand that is currently in the midst of major political upheaval, and I am in the wedding!  I really can’t wait for everything to be finally happening, but as with all of my trips to developing and third-world countries, the butterflies hit and you start thinking, are you sure about all of this?  The answer is always that same, and it’s yes of course I’m ready, but the goodbyes, putting your life in storage, and throwing three sheets to the wind is all about 100% commitment.  I’m a travel junkie…I get off on this stuff, but it is always a bit freaky in those last few days before getting dropped off by your sobbing, snot dripping, wreck of a mother at the curb and letting her know that everything will be fine, I love, and I’ll let you know that I am safe and sound in a few days.  Talk about feeling your heartbreak!  But, like I said, it’s all about 100% committment. Perhaps I am also feeling a bit more trepidation about this trip because I have my graduate thesis on the line here.  I need to come back with some results, which will only happen through determination, discipline, and keeping my nose to the grind stone.  To better my chances of success, I will be renting an apartment in Cairo for 5 months, which will serve as a home base for traveling around the region and doing research.  This is semi-comforting except for the fact that when you are putting money on the line and entering lease agreements in foreign countries, the risk of getting jipped or stuck in tight spot increases.

Top Performers in Good Houskeeping’s Carry-On Testing

For over 100 years the fine people at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute (GHRI) have labored to help consumers by testing and recommending products ranging from food, to electronics, to pet products, and everything in between.  The reputation they have gained has made the Good Housekeeping name one of the most trusted and recognized in the world.  A recent test conducted by the GHRI was of particular interest to us at Luggage Pros.  The test was done on 24 of the newest carry-on luggage bags, and the results were very interesting.  The testing was based on roominess, size, weight, durability, water repellency, and a series of evaluations of performance and comfort.  A complete, detailed description of the testing process can be found here .  The following are five of the top performers in the GHRI testing of carry-on luggage: Briggs & Riley Transcend 20″ Carry-On Upright GHRI Test and Evaluation Always one of the leaders in quality, Briggs created this little beauty, which is perfect for a weekend getaway.  GHRI testing showed its toughness and ease of handling.

Travelling becomes more comfortable

A luxury room on an airplane, could this really be? Those were our thoughts exactly after reading that Ilyushin 18 aircraft, parked in the Netherlands has been transformed into a deluxe suite complete with a jacuzzi, sauna and 3 flat screen televisions! We just can’t imagine an airplane trip taking a 360 degree twist into an indulgent and enjoyable experience.

Testing Out the New Kodak Playsport Zx3

So, as you all know, I am leaving on a long international trip and featured a blog about the different tech gadgets I will be bringing along; one of which I am really excited about is the Kodak Playsport Zx3, a completely waterproof, full 1080p HD camcorder.  Yesterday I went for a surf with a couple of buddies for what may be the last time before I take off, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to test out my new camera in the water.  The quality and userability is pretty remarkable and I would defintiely recommend buying for one to any of you who are looking for a camera that suits the adventurous lifestyle. Here is the video that I put together using the Kodak Playsport Zx3, in conjunction with the new Pinnacle Studio 14 video editing software

The “Skinny Luggage” has arrived with Antler’s “New Size Zero”!

In March of 2009, an English luggage company, Antler, came to the United States to take on the world’s largest consumer market.  This 90 year old company has dominated the European luggage industry for a number of years, creating a vast following of loyal Antler customers!   In just one year, Antler held strong in the very competitive U.S. luggage market, making a name for itself, all  the while learning a thing or two about what the American consumer wants and adjusting their products to define those needs.  I recently sat down with Andrew Hamilton, Vice President of Antler USA, to discuss Antler’s history, the lessons they learned along the way, and what makes Antler the “perfect” luggage choice.

7 New Ways to Keep Your Garage and Tools Organized

Everyone has one: a kitchen drawer crammed full of junk that you just can’t bring yourself to chuck. Mine’s brimming with rubber bands, old batteries, mysterious keys, matchbox cars, expired coupons, dusty nunchucks and questionable aspirin. But at least it’s manageable. What isn’t manageable, though, is when your garage starts to resemble that same kitchen drawer but on a larger scale.

Top 10 Favorite Purses from the Pros

It’s finally Spring and time to throw out that old purse.  Embrace the fresh, new season and time of new beginnings with a new purse!  To help you decide which of our many fabulous purses you’d enjoy, we’ve picked our top 10 favorites.   (listed in no particular order) 1. Ellington Nicole Hobo – The best thing about this bag, besides the great color selection, is the size.  Large, but not gigantic, it fits in perfectly with today’s casual chic purses.  It also has enough interior pocket for pens and lip gloss but still leaves enough room for your wallet, sunglasses, cell phone and Kindle.  Classification: too adorable! 2. LUG Taxi Tote – Talk about space!  Ideal for books and a water bottle or a beach towel and sunscreen, this bag can accompany you anywhere you want to go.  AND it has a clear coated bottom for easy clean up of spills.  With a removable mirror and coin pouch, this tote can double as one or your favorite purses, too.  Classification: awesomely functional! 3.

Offset your carbon footprint the next time you travel.

This March, I am one of the lucky ones who is taking a tropical vacation to escape snowy Minnesota.  I’ll be staying in Nassau (Bahamas) all week!  Sun, surf and hot tubs here I come! However, I will be hopping a couple of planes to get to my much-anticipated vacation.  So, I’ll pack my American Tourister Luggage and fly to Atlanta’s airport for a layover and then on to Nassau.  That’s over 2,300 travel miles, not including the shuttle I’ll be taking to and from the airport.  Since this isn’t the greenest way to travel, I wanted to do something that would offset the emissions I will be contributing to.

A suitcase full of cords

With each trip, I seem to be carrying more and more charger cords – to the point where I’m having trouble remembering which cord is for what. And I’ve just bunged them all into the front pocket of my suitcase – which has become Cord Central, a tangle of plastic-coated white and black cords

5 for Friday: New Tire Chains, Jeep Accessories and a Car Vacuum Available Now

Hi Marie, Carry-on baggage restrictions can depend on who you’re flying with and where you’re flying from, so the best thing you can do is check with your airline or visit the airport’s information site. However, most carriers allow you one standard-sized carry-on bag measuring no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22ins x 18ins x 10ins), including the handle, pockets and wheels, PLUS a small laptop bag or handbag.
