Arizona’s SB1070 law may impact tourism this summer

Arizona’s controversial new law regarding illegal immigrants may have a detrimental impact on travel and tourism in the southwestern state. The law, which requires police to question “reasonably suspicious” individuals to determine whether or not a resident is legal or not, has been challenged by politicians, Arizona natives and even the President. If the individuals in question by the police cannot immediately produce the required legal documents, they can be arrested, jailed for 6 months and fined for $2,500.

Vedder Mountain Ridge Trail

The first photo is the north-east side of the Vedder Mountain Ridge Trail I hiked on Easter Sunday 2010. The peak in the distance left of tree in the center is cheam. At this elevation the wind cuts through unobstructed so the temperature drops off quite a bit compaired to the rest of the trail.

Let Battle Commence

The two-week Easter break was more hectic than even we had anticipated and our headquarters began to resemble Churchill’s war rooms at the height of WWII.  The sheer logistics involved in ensuring all areas and major establishments are supplied with the correct leaflets both before and during the school holidays can be daunting – especially when so many outlets don‘t open for business until the

Bangkok to Laos – Luang Prabang

4th March I woke early on Australian time, but my early start wasn’t necessary; checkout was smooth (and a pleasant surprise that they hadn’t charged me for the breakfast, dinner or drink because I had arrived late the night before!), a taxi was readily available and then the drive there was at over 100km/h! A little disconcerting, but the traffic was light and he seemed to be in control. Before and after check-in, I could take in the amazing Suvarnabhumi airport, which I hadn’t when I arrived. It is a beautiful building with huge windows and massive pieces of what I assume is fabric reflecting upward-pointing lights back down to the clean white floors and metal railings

Galapagos Islands Seek Sustainable Growth

Tourism is an incredibly lucrative industry in the Galapagos: The numbers of visitors have quadrupled between 1990 and 2009, and more than 160,000 people now visit each year. For mainland Ecuadorians, the islands are seen of a source of higher incomes, and many move to the archipelago to earn better wages. But thanks in part to lax enforcement of residency permits, the population of the protected region now stands at 30,000 and is growing at a rate of 6.5 percent a year, compared with 2.0 percent on mainland Ecuador

Save the Elephants: How You Can Help

We were sorry to learn recently that the riverside research station of Iain Douglas-Hamilton, of Save the Elephants , in northern Kenya, was destroyed on the morning of March 4, 2010 by a flash flood, which resulted from a storm several miles upstream. Save the Elephants is an organization, that, as its name indicates, works to research and protect the elephant population in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve, and it was featured prominently in “Family Ties: The Elephants of Samburu,” a story in the September 2008 issue of National Geographic written by David Quammen. In the piece, Quammen describes the reserve and the elephants’ role within it: The reserve is a relatively small area, just 65 square miles of semiarid savanna, rough highlands, dry washes (known locally as luggas ), and riparian forests of acacia and doom palm along the north bank of the Ewaso Ngiro River.

Sudhir Tailang – Famous Cartoonist of India

Cartoon is a rare creation that wraps art, portraiture and comment in the same picture. It appears funny but the message it delivers is hardly that. There are many famous cartoonists who specialize in drawing cartoons by applying the traditional method of sketching rough pictures by pencil
