Great weather at the moment! On another note their are signs that hotel prioces might come down on Phi Phi Island. The tourism industry, which normally generates about 6-8 per cent of gross domestic product, is suffering from the global economic crisis and last year’s eight-day closure of Bangkok’s two commercial airports. Among the measures proposed to revive sector, the ministry will urge Thai Airways International and other carriers to cut fares by 50 per cent to encourage more advanced bookings.

Kerala Travel Mart begins today

Showcasing new destinations and products in the tourism sector, the four-day Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) will be inaugurated here later this Saturday evening by chief minister, V S Achutanandan. Union Tourism minister, Ambika Soni will be chief guest at the function at the fifth edition of the mart, in which about 970 domestic and 570 international buyers have registered so far. Fifty countries including Australia, UK, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia will be represented at the mart, besides delegates from Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, UP, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Goa, the organisers said.

To coincide with the International Polar Year in 2008 Cabi Publishing in the UK published a book entitled Prospects for Polar Tourism, Edited by John Snyder & Bernard Stonehouse of the Scott Polar Research Institute. Mike wrote Chapter 6 Development of Tourism in Arctic Canada outlining some of the his early professional experiences in helping communities in Nunavut to develop carefully controlled cultural tourism, when catering for tourists indicated a possible route towards both economic self-sufficiency and cultural preservation.
