Recognition for Tourism in Morocco

Every year, the Commonwealth Business Council and the African Business Magazine host a very prestigious award ceremony, namely the African Business Awards. Many countries in Africa have been fortunate enough to have received the African Tourism Destination of the Year Award, recognizing the efforts made by them to develop the tourism industry within their respective countries. This year, in London, the efforts by the Moroccan government and tourism department were awarded with Morocco being crowed the 2009 African Tourism Destination of the Year.

Gorilla Tourism Reopens in Congo

Friend of Intelligent Travel , Molly Feltner , shares this story of sitting face-to-face with a silverback in Congo as one of the first tourists to visit Virunga National Park since tourism reopened in May. For the first time in nearly two years–following the massacre of seven endangered mountain gorillas and months of occupation by rebel forces– Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is welcoming back tourists for gorilla trekking. Up until a few months ago, Virunga National Park sat in the eye of a perfect storm of man-made calamities.

How Green is Your Conference Accommodation?

Trying to reduce your environmental footprint at conference?  We’ll be publishing a few tips over the next while, but one way is to choose places to stay that have sustainable environmental practices (and we’re not just talking about not changing your towels once a day.) Qualmark have introduced an enviromark standard which assesses tourism ventures on energy efficiency, waste management and water conservation and the Crowne Plaza, one of the hotels on the accommodation list , has qualified for a bronze award.  For a full list of other Christchurch accommodation with Qualmark Enviro ratings, see the Qualmark website , or  if B&Bs are your thing, the Organic Explorer directory lists a few Christchurch B&Bs under its Canterbury section.

Attracting Chinese Tourists the Jamaican Way (with some caveats)

This linked post talks about Jamaica’s tourism marketing efforts in China but I picked up on the usual errors of ignorance that I reported on in TravelMole last week – tourism officials too scared off by the ’strangeness’ of China to understand the issues for themselves. Instead they just believe whatever some consultant tells them and make their spending decisions on the back of that.

¡Baja Delicioso! Introduction and the Ultimate Carne Asada Taco at Tacos El Poblano

Steamed Mussels from Muelle Tres in Ensenada A couple of years ago, I met Bill aka Street Gourmet LA through a mutual friend and ever since then, my association with him has enabled me to experience some truly exquisite Mexican cuisine outside of LA, specifically in Tijuana, Guadalupe Valley and Ensenada. The first time I went down Baja Way with Bill, I was amazed! My second visit with him was just as exciting. However, my third visit was truly epically mind-blowing and it made me fall even more in love with the food along the Baja Coast of Mexico

China`s Ctrip Becomes Controlling Shareholder of ezTravel in Taiwan

Sun Jie, chief financial officer of Ctrip, noted that the increased investment is out of strategic consideration, pointing to the strong attraction of Taiwan travel for Chinese tourists. The cooperation between the two websites can provide more value-added service to Chinese tourists to Taiwan and ezTravel can book hotel accommodations via Ctrip platform for Taiwanese tourists to China, according to Sun. Ctrip bought 20% stake in ezTravel Ctrip in 2006 in personal name before the latter became a private company in August 2008.

Organic Chocolate in Ecuador

Kallari bars are considered to be some of the best chocolate around (at least by pastry chef Kate Zuckerman –see this article –and Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert ). Available in Whole Foods markets, they are a sweet you can feel good about buying: Over 850 Kichwa families living in the Amazon rain forest region of Ecuador have formed the Kallari Association, which grows the cacao used in the bars AND coordinates the production of chocolate from their own beans. Plus, 100% of profits are returned to the Kallari Association, allowing people in the area to make a living by doing something other than clearing trees in the Amazon

Strolling Through Via Argentina

About twenty years ago, Via Argentina was a calm street located in the well-to-do El Cangrejo neighborhood.  This is where the affluent dwellers of Panama City lived, (e.g., merchants, professionals, diplomats, international consultants and foreign investors).  It was where you would find the crème de la crème in Panama. After General Noriega’s military regime was toppled in 1989, the wealthy community of Panama City migrated to other developing areas in the city, such as Punta Pacífica and Costa del Este.  Beautiful and expensive high rise apartments and mansions were blooming in these exclusive areas.

Egypt, a new place for ecotourism, ecotravel and green hotels?

Egypt is an incredibly attractive tourism destination; it all started more than 2000 years ago when Roman travellers visited Egypt to see the ancient pharaonic ruins. Today tourism is Egypt’s most important industry, with 2.2 million jobs – however over 75% of the country’s tourist activity is concentrated on the Red Sea – thus mass tourism threatens to ruin Egypt’s unique heritage. Fortunately there is an extremely active Ecotourism Committee in the Egyptian Tourism Federation, accessible at http://www.etf.org.eg/ETFCommittees.asp?comm_id=3 Their area of action includes protecting natural areas and cracking down on illegal hunting
