Blogs v. Critics: Jay Rayner Talks New Media, eGullet, Platt

In a candid Q&A session , British food critic Jay Rayner —who may be better known to most as the British judge on Top Chef Masters —shares what turn out to be straightforward and interesting thoughts on a variety of topics like the changing media world, Michelin, Nick Denton, Adam Platt, and the nature of his role as a critic: On critics v. bloggers “I think it comes down to regarding ourselves as, dare I say it, premium brands.

Good News/Bad News: Civetta

[ Krieger , 6/4/09] After about a month of unforeseen delays, the chef and owners of UES restaurant Sfoglia along with some new partners opened their Nolita restaurant Civetta on 98 Kenmare. Given the number of celeb studded friends and family nights and the inclusion of a clubby lower-level lounge , the vibe here is much hipper, scenier, downtown than its Italian sister to the north. And the food is different too: the menu here has a more Mediterranean focus with influences from Spain, Greece, and North Africa.

Food bargains around Snellville

This first is a dinner deal at Rice Sushi Bar and Chinese Cuisine, in the Publix mall near Five Forks and Killian Hills Road: Next, the Cici Pizza near the Wall Mart in Stone Mountain has a 3.99 lunch special, that should be going on at least until school starts: Finally, Bonefish Grill has a dinner for 2 for 18 dollars a person (1 shared appetizer + a salad per person and an entree per person). Though that’s $36.00 for two people, considering that the entrees alone average $15.90 by themselves, there is some money to be saved with this deal.

Patios, Roofs, and Balcony’s… Oh My.

The Hotel Washington’s spectacularly unremarkable roof top bar and the newly renovated Point of View share the same stunning views of DC.  The drinks, cuisine and the décor have been updated and upgraded.  Sadly, mediocre service is still a component of this place.  Lines to enter are frustratingly long (even though I don’t wait in them) and woefully mismanaged.  Bartenders and cocktail servers are possessed with haughty pretentions that seem to expect a guest’s gratitude for their admittance.  With a round of drinks for my group of three being north of sixty dollars (including tax and gratuity,) I became even less enamored of this place where too many people wear sunglasses past the point of need, and take themselves far too seriously. ********** About a half a mile away from P.O.V

China Palace – You Need Call Waiting

I just have to vent my frustration.  I have always loved ordering from China Palace but one thing is left to be desired….their stupid phone lines.  Do they only have one or two phone lines?  Every time I call, I wind up with a busy signal and when I finally get through, no one answers!  Can’t they just pickup the line and ask to put me on hold???  I had to order pizza, again!  What’s going on over there!!! A website with an online ordering service would be great for them as well. Just my two cents….

Stare. Spread. Flip. Enjoy.

I’VE NEVER gushed unabashedly about anything since Cupcakes by Sonja.  Until now.  All I could talk about at work yesterday was Pepper Lunch . To think that at the time all I’d had was just the Double Beef Pepper Rice ! Sizzle it your way!   Look for this for good steak! That's the Pepper Lunch signage at their newly opened Alabang Town Center branch! So to make good on the personal targets I had set last week (“ targets ” – oh it sounds so SONA- ish …  hahaha!), I returned to Pepper Lunch at Alabang Town Center after office hours yesterday.  I invited a couple of friends to this gustatory adventure – Brother (a steak authority himself) and Francis . We asked for two Tokusen Rib Eye Steaks (Php 585.00 * each, a la carte) and one Shimofuri Pepper Steak (Php 570.00 * a la carte).  We made our accompaniment the Mixed Pepper Rice.  And we had to cap a fabulous dinner with luscious desserts – the Molten Chocolate Cake A La Mode and the Vanilla Crepe Cake A La Mode

Top 5 Spots Where Nate Appleman Could Land

Though the Nate-O-Matic is one of the best resources out there for speculating on all things Nate Appleman , it’s about time to narrow down the field a little. If he doesn’t go out on his own, a couple of spots where Applemania could land as one of the city’s newest and most talked about free agents: 1) Motorino 2.0 in the old Una Pizza Napoletana spot Pros : It would just be really cool, and New York would be replacing one tatted up chef with another.

travel, cuisine and service

You always hear people talk about the most popular tourist locations in Europe, usually because of their architecture, different cultural traditions or unique and famous cuisine. It makes many American (and other foreign) tourists long to visit historical sights of significant magnitude, to take in the very different culture than their own and for the chance to say “I was there!” as they smile their big and proud grins. For those same reasons, I’d like to visit the same places too, but with one additional reason – to experience, observe and take in what many successful experts call – the epitome of exemplary service in their hospitality.

The Mondrian Gives in to Neighbors, Axes Patio Plan

The site of the would-be drinking patio on Crosby [ via Curbed ] According to a press release sent out by the notorious and aggressive neighborhood group The Soho Alliance , The Morgans Hotel Group withdrew its liquor license applications for two of the outdoor spaces planned for the under-construction Mondrian Hotel at a recent SLA hearing. After a contentious meeting with the Community Board 2 SLA Committee, the developers of the hotel—which sits on Lafayette near Howard— agreed to some crushing stipulations for the outdoor spaces; however the full board overturned the committee’s decision later that month, recommending the SLA outright deny the Mondrian . That decision most likely led to the withdrawal.

Strolling Through Via Argentina

About twenty years ago, Via Argentina was a calm street located in the well-to-do El Cangrejo neighborhood.  This is where the affluent dwellers of Panama City lived, (e.g., merchants, professionals, diplomats, international consultants and foreign investors).  It was where you would find the crème de la crème in Panama. After General Noriega’s military regime was toppled in 1989, the wealthy community of Panama City migrated to other developing areas in the city, such as Punta Pacífica and Costa del Este.  Beautiful and expensive high rise apartments and mansions were blooming in these exclusive areas.

Lawsuit: Man claims he found used condom in his soup

A mission Viejo, CA man has sued a local California Claim Jumper restaurant claiming he ordered French Onion Soup and bit into a condom instead of melted cheese.   Zdenek Philip Hodousek filed the lawsuit July 21 in Orange Sounty Superior Court seeking unspecified damages over fears he may have contracted a disease.  He wants to have the restaurant employees DNA tested to find a match to the used condom. The restaurant PR firm says no one can prove that the condom submitted to a lab for testing came from the restaurant.  Also, that the restaurant did an internal probe and revealed no employee was involved in the wrongdoing

Papa’s Pizza

D.Jones, Cooper and I were heading home from an exhausting day at a truck and tractor pull yesterday.  And yeah…you read that right.  It’s crazy the things we will do for our truck-obsessed boy! Anyway, like I was saying, we were headed home from the uh, “fun”, when we remembered a pizza place that a good friend had recommended.  Pizza sounded fabulous, so we quickly took the proper exit off of 94 and headed toward Papa’s Pizza in Camden. The place was easy to find, even though we are not at all familiar with north Minneapolis (and it helped that D.Jones was on the phone with an employee there, who kindly talked us through the directions).  Once we arrived, we wandered in a door that led us through a small deli with a few choices of gelatos, some imported cheeses and meats.  Then, through a small hallway where some statues of the Rat Pack pointed us in the direction of the dining room.  Now, we’ve been in some pretty dark and dingy family run Italian spots, between here and Wisconsin, but this dining room was light and bright, and even offered patio dining.  We opted to stay indoors after a long day in the sun, and ordered up a medium vegetarian ‘za for D.Jones and I, and a kid’s cheese pizza for Coops

National Coney Island

Natural-casing beef franks star in Detroit’s culinary signature, the  Coney Island , a hot dog on a steamed bun, topped with mild, greek-style chili, mustard, and chopped onions.  Locals swear allegiance to a favorite hot dog joint, claiming National Coney Island or Lafayette Coney Island as the best in town.  I can vouch that National’s coneys are delicious, but I can’t say that the faintly sweet, mild  chili added much to the experience, though my better half thought it a good foil for the juicy dog.

Friday – my day of rest!

Well well my pretty people… how was your weekend? Mine was a fabulously long one because I had Friday off! It was swell day that saw me enjoy Ikea; I haven’t been there in ages – and I especially haven’t been to the new store here in Perth since it opened. Well; it was HUGE! I had written myself a list that I was determined to stick to which hardly ever happens when I go to Ikea; the list will generally not even be used as I always walk out of there with more things that I know are not necessary; I find I have a tendency to do this in Ikea and Asian grocery stores (which is also where I went to this weekend)

Zócalo

The first time I went to Zócalo on East 4th Street I enjoyed my Chile Relleno/Enchilada combination plate.  After the bad taste my second trip left in my mouth I’m more inclined to say take your money and just go to Chipotle.  Seriously, I’m going to compare my burrito and side dishes to fast food.  Ready?  Here goes. Let’s start with the burrito con pollo.  The char-grilled adobo chicken tasted burnt, and was nowhere near as tender or as well marinated as Chipotle’s offering.  Furthermore, the guacamole was atrocious.  It tasted like it had been sitting out for hours.  To be frank, I can make way better guacamole than what was served to me with my burrito at Zócalo.  And what I can make doesn’t even come close to the guacamole heaven available at your neighborhood friendly Chipotle. Empanadas…yuck, yuck, yuck
