The Shutter: Centovini Closing Up Shop Tomorrow Night

[ Kalina , 6/1/06] Soho : Calls to the restaurant confirm that unfortunately located but ultimately charming restaurant Centovini will close after three years on West Houston. Centered on a expansive wine collection and Italian small plates, Centovini is owned by the founder of neighboring store and design inspiration Moss —which is why many passersby may have confused it for a furniture store—and the owners of I Trulli on East 27th.

UPDATE #3: Is Achilles-Persephone (The Achilles Project) Closing? Looks Like It

Earlier today, a combination restaurant/boutique in the Fort Point neighborhood of Boston appeared to be closing its doors, possibly as early as this weekend. According to several sources, including a very reputable one ( Citysearch Boston ), Achilles-Persephone (which is also known as The Achilles Project), was apparently getting ready to close down after being in business for about a year and a half. But in a message sent to us by the restaurant/boutique on Thursday evening, The Achilles Project is, in their words, “alive and kicking.” They also had an ad on their Facebook page saying that “To make room for fall we’re having the biggest sale of the summer.” But as of Friday (July 31), there were repeated confirmations of The Achilles Project closing by the end of the upcoming weekend, including a reaffirmed confirmation by Citysearch Boston.

California Dreaming

In my head, I’m sitting here today.  This is the pool at the W Hotel in Los Angeles, which was included in this year’s renovation designed by the Fab Five’s Thom Filicia.  When I first lived in LA we used to hang out at this pool all time.  We’d spend Saturdays ordering cocktails from the outdoor bar and lounging in the sun, all the while remarking how lucky we were that they didn’t seem to care we weren’t hotel guests.   Naturally too many people like us ruined it for everyone and within the next year they cracked down and hired a damn pool bouncer! image by Allison Somers via Elle Decor We were never anywhere fancy enough to rent a cabana, but Thom’s really spruced those up as well.  I’m loving the cute wallpaper that coordinates with the pillows on the pool loungers. The good news is that non-hotel guest riff raff is still allowed to enjoy the outdoor bar and restaurant, The Backyard, also recently renovated.  Note:  I have tried sending drinks and sweet-talking the bouncer from this location.  It doesn’t work.

My Washington, DC Food Picks

I’m headed to Washington for work soon, but the real reason I am going is to eat.  Anyone who follows this blog with any regularity knows that much of my energy is focused on food these days and this trip is no exception – at least in my mind.  The soul-crushing hours at the office will be made bearable by keeping my eyes on the prize and smiling through the day.  You see, I have these places to look forward to as well as some new places that I might just find along the way: The Austin Grill – I used to wait tables there.  Carnitas and a Shiner Bock and, if there’s time, a ‘rita on the rocks.  I can taste it now! The Old Ebbitt Grill – The raw bar, beer on tap and crab cakes.  Maybe Crab Cake Eggs Benedict – I think they call it “Eggs Chesapeake.”  That growl you hear is my stomach. Five Guys – I haven’t tried Ray’s Hell Burger and some reviewers say it’s better than Five Guys.  Unfortunately, it’s out of the way for me and they don’t serve fries.  Sorry, I don’t want mac ‘n cheese with my burger.  Plus, there’s no way theirs could beat Mrs. NH’s.  Five Guys it is.

Photographic Memory Friday

William’s first day at school.  In some ways, this only seems like yesterday – and yet he looks so little.  Those days are long gone now.  It makes me quite sad. He’s been staying in Bournemouth with my parents all week, and is coming home later on today.  The house has been very quiet without him – I’m so looking forward to seeing him. We went out for dinner last night with my friend Becky, to celebrate her birthday.  I was driving, due to my current teetotalism (is that a real word?), and we went to Turtley Corn Mill , which was lovely.  The food wasn’t particularly exciting – just good pub food, but it was very busy (no sign of the recession at all), and the building had been restored beautifully.  It had lovely gardens, including a lake and river frontage, and although I wouldn’t rush back for an evening meal (it’s quite a long drive), I’d definitely go and sit in the garden and have a lunchtime drink in the sunshine (assuming we ever get any again).

Bold vision on the horizon for city

A vibrant foreshore entertainment district, an indigenous cultural centre, cheap inner-city housing for students, voting at 16 and gay marriage are some ideas for improving Perth that Australia’s 2008 youth ambassador to the United Nations will take to today’s C2030 Summit.   One of many speakers at the summit, Elizabeth Shaw, 25, said a bold plan to bring the river to the city should be at the top of the State Government’s to-do list.     Ms Shaw, of Claremont, is on the City of Perth youth advisory council.

Watching, not Doing: From Michael Pollan’s giant piece in…

From Michael Pollan’s giant piece in this week’s New York Times Magazine : “…the average American spends a mere 27 minutes a day on food preparation…less than half the time that we spent cooking and cleaning up when Julia arrived on our television screens. It’s also less than half the time it takes to watch a single episode of “Top Chef”…What is wrong with this picture?” Don’t worry: Pollan is going to explain what’s wrong in the next eight pages

5 Quintessential Vancouver Restos

Someone asked me the other day where I would take foodie guests to eat in Vancouver and even though I did have guests in the summer, I still gave it a good think before deciding to post my top 5 here. To some extent it would depend on the guest (tastes, sense of culinary adventure, favoured cuisines, etc.), your relationship to them (romantic, family, big group, etc) and time of year (patio, view), but here’s a short list: 1. Hapa Izakaya 1479 Robson St, Vancouver Hapa is first because I take everyone to Hapa.

Legal’s Harborside to be Built at the Old Jimmy’s Harborside Location

A little over two years ago, Boston institution Jimmy’s Harborside closed its doors, with talk of Legal Sea Foods opening a new location where the popular seafood restaurant used to be. Now, according to the Boston Globe, WBZ 1030, and other sources, Legal’s will indeed be building a new restaurant at the spot on Northern Avenue along the Boston waterfront, though the name of the new restaurant will be Legal’s Harborside, in recognition of the restaurant that it replaces. The Boston Globe mentions that work will start on the site today, with a total of four restaurants being built at this spot.

SAKURA: Hanover Street, London

The DAY my sister found out I was moving to London she called me and said, ”I have ONE word for you – SAKURA”. She said that it was THE BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD and that I would love it and once I went I would go back 24/7……she was right. I DO NOT KNOW WHY IT HAS TAKEN ME 10 MONTHS to follow her advice – maybe a conscious rebellion thing….a sibling stand off – I dunno….but the joke was on me as, for crying out loud, this place is heaven on earth.

Breakfast Break-in & Bonobo’s

Good morning, lovelies! I hope your week is starting to wind down and you have a fabulous weekend planned to celebrate August. As I said, I’m going to a wedding near Salt Lake City, Utah , for the weekend, so I’ll be blogging from the West Coast! Yesterday started out… whimsically.  Ari’s brother, Josh, has been threatening to disturb Jim ’s face for more than six months, but I was so surprised when I opened the door and saw him and laughed for a good minute. Poor Jim! I’m sure he kept his sense of humor about it, though .  This cookie had: 1/3 cup oats 1/2 banana 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder 2 T skim milk 1 t chunky pb toppings: cinnamon, 1 prune (split), dried cherries Ari had already left for the deli to work by the time I got around to eating breakfast, so I met him there and guzzled down an iced coffee with 1% milk

Dorado, the Explorer

You know what’s cute? The eager teenagers working the counter at the brand-new Dorado Tacos and Cemitas in  Brookline. Soon, they’ll have mastered the order-bagging and card-swiping and juice-dispensing, but for now, each task is nervously, studiously performed, which means that, while some patience is required (the kitchen is learning the ropes, too), you will be reassured several times that your order is almost up and, wait, did you want your salad packed up with the rest, or do you want to eat it here?

Red Lobster At Home!

Yesterday was my anniversary and due to the fact that we have 3 babies under the age of 2, going out on the town is generally just a nice thought.  Last night was no different and so we stayed in.  But staying in was a great idea!  If you read yesterday’s post, you may have noticed that Harris Teeter had snow crab legs on sale for just $2.99lb.  Well, that sale was the framework for our anniversary dinner at home. Menu: Steamed Snow Crab Legs w/heart healthy butter Sauteed Garlic Asparagus Steamed Rice Tea and/or wine How does that sound?  After the little ones were kissed goodnight, our living room transformed into Chez D’Amour.  All it took was a blanket, a few candles and attractively plated entrees.  Now, you can’t be too cute eating snow crab legs and sitting on the floor, but it was so nice to share dinner with my DH.  How much did this cost?  Well, here you go… 2lb Snow Crab Legs $5.98 1lb Asparagus $3.99 Rice was already in the pantry Tea was already in the fridge- purchased for $0.00 during a recent double coupon shopping visit Wine $4.98 (about the cost of an inexpensive “glass” of wine in a restaurant) So for about $14 we had a wonderful romantic anniversary dinner by candle light.  This dinner would have easily cost $50+ had we ventured out.  An added bonus was that after we were finished eating, we didn’t have to drive home:-)  Dinner was supposed to be ice cream and fresh fruit, but after dinner and exchanging gifts, we were ready for bed, skipping the ice cream! So, be creative, save some $$ and enjoy each other!  Use what you have in the fridge or snag an awesome sale and make your favorites from a restaurant.  Go to CDKitchen.com for copy cat recipes from popular restaurant chains

Down the road from Detroit: Zingerman’s

Just 25 miles from Detroit in Ann Arbor, the Zingerman’s specialty foods empire includes a mail-order business, creamery, white-tablecloth restaurant specializing in regional American food, bakery & baking school, coffee roaster, catering branch, and merchandising & training consultancy, not to mention the cookbooks & eating guides.  It all started in 1982 with the Deli , located in an old house not very far from the University of Michigan campus.  All these years later, the Deli is stuffed from floor to ceiling with tasty treats, eager patrons, and peerless sandwiches.  In honor of the July theme, Camp Bacon , I sampled a BLT with cheddar, accompanied by a side of fried latke fingers and new-style crisp pickles.  Excellent bacon and superior tomatoes on first-rate bread:  the BLT is a simple thing, but sublime when elevated by impeccable ingredients. Keep up with Zingerman’s co-founder Ari Weinzweig, who blogs over at the Atlantic monthly.  Or send a  reuben sandwich kit to your favorite deli hound….

Dinner, a movie, and "semblance of a life"

“THE PROPOSAL” had me at the mere mention of unsweetened cinnamon light soy latte .  “Christmas in a cup,” as it was succinctly described. “The Proposal” – well-worth the Php 150.00 movie ticket! Any movie that uses food and / or drink to make a point – or establish a premise – has me all ears and eyes.  And in the particular case I had last night, it even had me re-examining my decision to get the Starbucks Coffee Company® Dark Mocha Raspberry Frappucino I was sipping.  Definitely not unsweetened.  Definitely not light.  But I snapped out of it in a jiffy – all ears and eyes to the movie, remember? “The Proposal” stars Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate, editor-in-chief of book publishing company Colden Books, who – in the opening scenes – could very well be Miranda Priestly incarnate.  For a moment, it felt like it was “The Devil Wears Prada” all over again.  From the walk to the office to the flurry of activity that results as the rank and file put on the token appearance of being hard at work as the big boss passes by…  to the executive assistant – with coffee in hand – that barely dodges a morning tongue-lashing by making it to the office literally a mere few steps ahead of the boss.  Margaret swipes the coffee off of her assistant’s hand in one clean motion and I knew the movie had finally started rolling.
