BARCELONA underground … FIGUERES highlights
Back to Passeig de Gràcia railway station , right in time for an express train to Dali ’s Figueres . We even had time for a short visit to Casa Amatller ’s kitchen and a snack. Only that the underground cafe clock had the wrong time, so we didn’t understand why our express train was just leaving the station… another missed train, ouch! After almost a underground hour wait we are on our train trip to Figueres and everything went fine from here

Vote for Pete’s!
Washingtonian has a Pizza Pool for the best pizza in Washington – I’ve been rather outspoken about Pete’s, on 14th and Irving in the Highland Park complex, as being my favorite pizza in DC. There’s something about the crispy crust and sweet sauce of a New Haven style pizza. (And just for the record, those of you in the New Haven know, Modern is better than Pepe’s). The Washingtonian description highlights Pete’s “The New Haven” – but I’d like to cast my vote for the Edge of the Woods : carmelized onions, eggplant chips, ricotta, and spinach… delicious. Until Noon today – Vote for Pete’s!

Thailand Hotel and Resort Reviews: The Lapa Resort, Hua-Hin, Thailand
Thailand Hotel and Resort Reviews: The Lapa Resort, Hua-Hin, Thailand This sweetly colored boutique hotel may not be facing any particular beach but it does give visitors a taste of true Hua Hin charm through its chic decor and creative architectural designs. As it is located just off the main Petchakasem Road, the hotel gives vacationers easy access to Hua Hin’s array of dining and entertainment options, and within the perimeter of the endearing Lapa, lies Sangria Bar, a spa, three different restaurants and a large pool filled with ozonated saline water. Guests can opt for regular deluxe and superior rooms, however for the best of the Lapa experience, the Lapa Cool options are spectacular

Forcing the Turning of Tables – good or bad for the industry?
I’m baffled but intrigued by the increase in the number of restaurants determined to restrict the time you can spend dining. On a recent visit to London last week, my friend and I were keen to find a nice restaurant to settle down in for the evening to catch up on each others lives and merrily chat, drink and eat. Unfortunately, we had a somewhat different experience. We arrived at 6.45pm and were told that we had until 8.15pm to vacate our table. Just an hour and half for a good girlie catch up didn’t sound very appealing but with the thunderous clouds homing in on us, we decided to take our chances and see if we could talk and eat quickly. We had starters, mains courses and a couple of cocktails each so it was obvious we were happy to spend during the evening. However at 8pm when we had finished our meal we were asked if we could settle the bill as there were people waiting for the table. Not having the will or the patience to debate with the very polite waiter we decided to go. So we learned our lesson not to dine there again. However, this morning I have just been trying to book another chain restaurant in London for this evening and couldn’t believe that when I reached the booking page I was notified that I could only have the table for two hours. So, I didn’t book it! Having done some research this morning on some other restaurants in London, I’ve discovered that some reputable and expensive restaurants are doing the same thing – so what is going on? Does this formula really work for restaurants? Have they seen an increase in turnover as a result of enforcing time limits on their tables and are they yet to see the decline as more of us are disenchanted by this bizarre policy. I can certainly understand that in some circumstances restaurants need to secure two sittings especially in the centre of London and the theatre district. However, if I want to book a nice meal with friends or family and make a night of it, our choice of restaurant is now limited. I don’t want to get dressed up, travel to London and look forward to a gastronomic delight only to find that I’m going to be turfed out hungry if I don’t choose my dishes quickly or scald myself downing my coffee. I’d love to know how this is all affecting the restaurant industry and more importantly London! Do we want to be this unwelcoming right now? Who is helping the restaurant industry in this difficult time to avoid making mistakes like this that could have long term damage on custom?

How to improve the LOCAL Economy -Ramli’s Views….
The local economy like in many ASEAN countries are run by small businesses, local entrepreneurs and small capital investments…as time goes by these small or micro business set ups become bigger and move to the levels of SMEs’ and Medium size companies….and eventually Large Companies with listing in the local bourse and even overseas markets… However like in Malaysia,to start a small business set up need to abide to all legal requirements like registering the company, open bank accounts, establish representatives for matters of legal, tax and co secretarial matters etc…SO all these need some money and thats what hampering small businesses since money they have are all needed to make the business start and grow faster..so the lesser money available as working capital will mean a harder time to make the business move and grow and survive the early hardships of running a business set up… LIke in Indonesia which Ramli was able to realize the small businesses are so plentiful and well encouraged to start and spread all over the 33 PROVINSI,349 KABUPATEN and 100 KOTA (CITIES) You will noticed many kinds of products and services are made available for the more than 300 million population and as such with continual innovations and creative work to meet to the high competetive business environment, small businesses offer great new products thorough new inventions, innovations, modifications or just copy from existing ones..as such the consumers have lots of choices and businesses will grow, thrive and support the LOCAL Economy better than if there was lots restrictions in terms of business set ups, registrations, legal conformance and other not-so-important pre conditions as far as small micro businesses are concerned… Like the Americans Lemonade Stands many decade years ago, these small start ups have allowed the Local US Economic activities to grow and thrive due to the good business conditions that allow small business to start selling their products and services and with good leadership and management, these small businesses become World Class companies like A&W,McDonalds,KFC,WalMart,Coca Cola and many more…. In Malaysia we have these small stall set ups that now become BIG Restaurants like SYED,Hameed,Khalifah,Nelson,Marrybrown and others… What Ramli wants to suggest further are: 1.Allow small businesses like these Lemonade Stands to start and grow without much hindrance from the local city authorities or town councils…. 2.Issue easy to get license or permits for small micro business set ups 3.Encourage drop outs, unemployed graduates or any inspiring and hard working persons to start this small “Lemonade Stands” and assist them where and when necessary 4.Upon their business prosper then make a review and qualify those into the SMEs’ rank and all these prerequisites or conditions to abide to… 5.Small start ups are necessary before they become Large Cos’ to spur the Local Economy more and more… thats for sure… For more infos, contact Ramli at hp:019-2537165 or email: ramlipromoter@yahoo.com

Day 325 – A Saturday Morning in Sanford FL
Sanford Farmers Market Sanford FL is a great place to enjoy a relaxed Saturday morning, away from all the hustle and bustle. Since I also wanted to check out the new covered shade I had written about during the week, I decided to visit the weekly Sanford Farmers Market on Magnolia Square and then walk a bit through downtown Sanford to see what was new in town. It was quite hot but nevertheless there was a good amount of people out here enjoying Sanford, listening to live music at Magnolia Square and visiting the surrounding stores, cafes and restaurants.

The missing ingredient
I’m currently re-reading an updated version of Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential which features descriptions so fantastically outrageous about the field of professional cooking that even the second time around, I find myself intrigued by this strange and over the top world. Bourdain would have his readers believe that behind every restaurant in America are scenes as crazy, booze-laden and drug-fueled as the ones at which he has worked throughout his career, that somehow a kitchen atmosphere inherently encourages intense working relationships and equal levels of debuachery, but I think something else needs to be part of this equation

Tough times and shifting consumer habits have Lake Mary-based Ruth’s Chris thinking a little smaller
Dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steak House is a big deal, featuring thick steaks and fine wine in a luxurious setting. But tough times and shifting consumer habits have the Lake Mary -based chain thinking a little smaller these days. As its parent company, Ruth’s Hospitality Group, struggles with plunging sales and heavy debt, it’s offering less-expensive food and may build scaled-back restaurants once the company can begin growing again

Pane e Salute
A meal at this osteria is a total immersion experience. It was a celebration for us, so we went all out, from the delicate prosecco to the late-night liqueurs: with wine pairings, sopressata, chanterelles and homemade papardelle, wild sockeye salmon, sour cherry cake, and espresso in between. Everything about the restaurant is an expression of the passion Deirdre and Caleb, the owners, have for food and the kind of hospitality they’ve experienced in Italy. They wanted to transport not only the recipes and cooking methods home with them, but also the culture of food. They gave us a good taste of all three last night, during our long meal. It was all wonderful, but the highlights for me were the antipasti (sopressata, fresh mozzarella dressed with a little olive oil, a crostini with chicken liver pate); the olive oil served with the aperitivo, which tasted like fresh olives and greenery; the chanterelles and pasta, which melted on my tongue; and the wine pairings, which were certainly the most thrilling experiences my palate has had in a long time. The standouts were, with the antipasti, a blend in the Alsatian gewürztraminer style made by the winery Lincoln Peak in… yes… Vermont; with the chanterelles, “Delfino della Contessa” (the—whimsical and rich—countess’s dolphin), a blend of riesling, chardonnay, and some others, which was bright and full of surprises; and with the salmon, Rainoldo Roso del Valtellino, a medium-bodied red made with the nebbiolo grape, which didn’t overpower the fish with fruit but held its own alongside the walnut-pinenut-basil pesto. Certainly the most interesting part of the meal, aside from the company of my husband after several weeks apart, was the last part. Deirdre, in her perfectly natural yet both eccentric and sophisticated grace, brought over two cordial glasses containing two liqueurs she had made herself. One was dark, and tasted of walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and ginger. The other was the color of iced tea, but was a combination of two mints, lemongrass, stinging nettle, and lavender. I look forward to reading her new book, Libation .

Six-ish courses at The Roundhouse, Cape Town
Winter in Cape Town brings with it plenty of restaurant specials (you can get an updated list at Roussow’s Restaurants ), and The Roundhouse is offering six courses for R180. Well, except that the amuse-bouche and the pre-dessert sorbet each count as a course, as does the post-dinner popcorn and marshmallows, so it’s really three courses maybe four. I was there for dinner on a packed Wednesday evening – Capetonians do love a good winter special.

No Bacon in Sight at Fukagawa for a Traditional Japanese Breakfast
Traditional Japanese breakfast definitely strays from the Western tradition of bacon and eggs, pancakes and waffles and in fact, is more like a meal you’d have for lunch or even dinner. In doing research to find out what restaurant serves a Japanese breakfast in the LA area, one place came up over and over and that was Fukagawa in the city of Gardena. So one early morning, a few members from my dining group made the trek out with me to this South Bay restaurant

The Wicked Wolf Shutters to Make Way for 2nd Ave Deli
Upper East Side : Though 2nd Ave Deli heir Jeremy Lebewohl negotiated his takeover of the Wicked Wolf space on 1st and 75th way back in January , the bar has been fully operational ever since, awaiting word from the deli giant to scram. Well, the time for the move has come. Wicked Wolf will close after service tonight , setting the stage for the one-time East Village institution to open yet another branch that is decidedly not on 2nd Avenue.

What happened to Langosta Roja?
I have been to Red Lobster two times in the past 3 months. The first visit was on my own accord – I wanted to take my wife to dinner and a movie. Red Lobster seemed to fit the bill as we both wanted seafood and liked the convenience factor of the restaurant being very near the theatre. On my most recent visit, we were attending a birthday lunch. On both recent visits, we went to the Red Lobster in Sanford, FL. Since the experiences were both so similar, I will lump my comments into a single blog.

Corn on the Cob – Cafe Habana Style
One of my fave snacks in NYC is the corn on the cob from Cafe Habana in Nolita. It’s Mexican-Style grilled corn that is slathered in a creamy concoction, dusted with cayenne pepper, rolled in cojita cheese and drizzled with lime juice. SO GOOD. Since I’m on a temporary ban from visiting NYC (no unnecessary travels before Paris) and was really jonesing for the corn, I did some google searching to figure out how to recreate this yumminess in my own kitchen. Corn season is just kicking into gear in Ontario so we had a few cobs in our fridge, I’ve been hoarding limes for some reason so I had a bunch of those and I figured the rest would be easy to acquire.

Hints On Having Low Cost Fun In Texas
Hello Everyone, Your Discount Queen has been in San Antonio for most of the past week. I was actually there on business trip, but all work and no play makes for a very DULL life. Whether you be the Discount Queen or any other person. While in Texas I decided beforehand to enjoy as much of the local sites as I possibly could without breaking my personal “piggy bank.” This blog is going to be a bit longer than my other postings, as I’m going to go into detail about some really great sites in both San Antonio & Austin. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy the “journey.” Now before any of you jump to any conclusions. I was only on the expense account from Sunday through Thursday and this was only for the hotel and some meals. I was staying at the TowneSuites by Marriott in San Antonio near the San Antonio airport. Breakfast was provided by the hotel, though in all honesty if I were a true breakfast person I would have STARVED to death. I mean this place actually offered GREEN bananas for us to eat. I don’t mean the ones you cook. I mean a yellow banana that was a 100% green. A WHOLE bowl of them. The so-called oatmeal was disgusting. One day the girl threw the oatmeal in a crockpot, about an inch deep and then about 9 inches of water.
