Save On Meats to Return to the Downtown Eastside!
Well, the grocery store and lunch counter are still here and never went anywhere, but as Gary of Save On Meats explains, the butcher shop has been closed down for a few months , much to the regret of savvy shoppers in Vangroover. Fortunately, it’s coming back in September (roughly planned for Labour Day) and will even feature a school of butcherly arts upstairs. Once again I can get my $3 slabs of blue cheese and my 99 cent bacon ends with my 1 lb hamburger and fries! video by April Smith of AHAMedia

Ceres Street by Day | Ceres Street by Night | Portsmouth, NH
Ceres Street is the cozy alleyway near Portsmouth’s infamous decks, a must-visit summertime destination. The alley is home to several local restaurants including The Oar House, Annabelle’s Ice Cream (which recently was named one of the best places for ice cream in the country!), The Black Trumpet, The Dolphin Striker, The Blue Claw, local art galleries and more. Saturdays will now feature shots of some of my favorite places during the day and during the night, to capture the essence of the changing moods of the city.

What I did LAST weekend.
Went to a family wedding near Pittsburgh on Friday evening: Traveled with my husband in our POWERFUL and COMFORTABLE Toyota 4Runner to Washington, DC via West Virginia and Maryland on Saturday, visiting a scenic rest area along the way: Saw the monuments and memorials at night once we arrived in the nation’s capital (after a delightful dinner at Zaytinya with a friend who lives in the area): Twenty years ago this month, my mother and I had the occasion to take a night tour of the city during the lunar eclipse of August 17, 1989. Last weekend’s experience was almost as awesome, but not quite . Wanted to stop in and say hello to the residents at THIS house

I got married. Well, Tom did too. To me. So that was convenient. I wonder who else has dropped out of the pool now. We generally do not go in for big anniversary celebrations. A card, some candy or flowers maybe and a nice dinner out. For the past eight years we have been calling our weekend at the Formula 1 race our anniversary present to each other. But this year there is no race in the USA or Canada. And jetting off to one of the European venues was not an option. Tomorrow we are going to a Tapas restaurant in the big city. I was shocked, SHOCKED to learn that what passes for a big city around here has not just one but two tapas bars. Amazing. They do not take reservations, but since we won’t have The Pesky Children with us and my parents are babysitting, (their rates are very reasonable) that isn’t a problem.

Living Newly Gluten-Free
There has been a whole lot of different things on my mind lately. Most of it not really safe for public consumption, and yet I feel that I need to update my blog anyway. A lot has changed for me over the last 6 or 7 months. One thing that finally answered many, of the general ‘What the hell is wrong with me??’ questions was finding out that I was gluten intolerant. Months after finding that carbs made me feel really ill, and then just cutting them out of my diet completely, I noticed that I was starting to feel really good. I lost weight, I was happier, my asthma nearly disappeared, I stopped getting migraines and I stopped getting sick – and I have spent a good portion of my life fighting off one sickness or another. My brother always used to tell me that I had a ‘wussy immune system’.

Lady and Sons
While in Savannah, we had to eat at Paula Deen’s restaurant. It is quite the ordeal to dine there! This is the crowd we waited with for seating at our 5:00 reservation! After, my husband waited in line for 30 minutes that morning in a line that wrapped around the block to put our name on the list. I say it is worth it. The locals seem a little put off by the hoopla surrounding the restaurant. My impression was they thought it had become too commercialized. They had all great things to say about Paula though. Savannahians like to be more authentic. And I have to say they are as is their beautiful city. One of kind and wonderful. Here is my husbands plate after helping himself to the buffet. We are not big buffet people (spoon licking, sneezing ect. yuck!) but, we were so hungry after eating only a little all day in anticipation of some good southern food. Yes, my plate was just as full. Judge me if you want. Everything was delicious! Everything! We still talk about it. Even the sweet tea with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint was perfect. The restaurant smelled like my grandma’s house at meal time. She is a southern lady herself. Made us feel right at home. So, you must try it out if you are in Savannah. Let me know if you liked as much as did.

Day Five in Paris
Our last full day in Paris! We took it easy and spent the morning exploring the Opera Quarter and shopping at Printemps, where I picked up a light gold sheepskin bag from Dior (I cheated, I took this picture 5 minutes ago with my iphone on a dining room chair). I was pretty set on buying something French so my only other options LV and Chanel. I skipped LV because I just didn’t want a handbag that 8 of my friends already have and Chanel feels a bit too mature for me. I keep telling Jeff that our next vacation needs to be in Italy so that I have more handbag options. I think he’s a little terrified. Back to the sightseeing then! The Opera House Afterwards, we took the metro over to Marais. I was surprised that we were a bit bored there, since we’d heard that this was a great place to walk around, shop, and sightsee. We walked by the Place des Vosges and saw the outside of Victor Hugo’s house. We also saw some shops on cute little French streets, just like we saw in every other district but less lively and interesting. Maybe we’re just not cultured enough to appreciate it! There was nothing particularly photogenic here so I’ll skip the pictures for this section and move on

PJ’s Abbey – A Great Brunch in Orange
California “Extra Dry” Sparkling Wine We visited PJ’s Abbey in Orange on Sunday for their lovely Champagne Brunch and some excellent Jazz. Two members of the wonderful and incredibly talented Ryan Rost Trio play there weekly and they are some of my favorites. I’m still trying to figure out how to get the third member of the group there, as he adds that “something special” to the sound, but I’ll take whatever I can get from these incredible musicians.

Vacation – Day 4 (what I remember…)
I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while, mostly to finish up where I left off (and to have a record of the whole trip!). So here goes… We slept in (I think) and took our time packing up our stuff and leaving the room. Check out time was at noon. The original plan was to check out, take our bags to the car, and then head back inside for some breakfast/lunch and maybe a few last hours at the slots. But by the time we got to the car we were tired (it was hot and the suitcases were heavy!) so we nixed going back inside and headed towards home. We stopped off at the only Wendy’s we could find using gipps (GPS), which was about 3 miles off the AC Expressway (but worth it – after 3 days of overpriced resort food!). After lunch, we drove the rest of the way back to Philly, detoring to Chester to use our Harrah’s coops (coupons)! Yes, after a full 3-1/2 days of gambling, we weren’t done! LOL! I don’t even remember how we did. I probably lost more money… but it was still fun. And that’s about all I can remember! Overall a very fun vacation!

Are you supporting your fellow Chamber members?
Hmmm? I know we are all suppose to be supporting each other by doing business with other Chamber Members. But are you? When you need a service or need to make a purchase, what is the first thing you do? Where do you look? I know what I do? I reach for my trusty Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory . For instance, I needed to find a Chiropractor. I did not know of any Chiropractors sooooo I took out my Membership Directory, looked under “Health and Wellness – Chiropractor” and there was Stephen G. Guild , Chiropractor. So I made my first appointment and was quite pleased by the experience that made subsequent appointments as well. So, due to Dr

Shitshow Alert: Jamba Juice’s Flatbread Pizzas Hit NYC
Union Square : Back in June, it was reported that Jamba Juice was planning on going waaay off brand by introducing flatbrads, sandwiches, salads, a line of frozen food, and (this is true) “a toy blender for kids to play Jamba Juice at home.” All this, of course, was an attempt to reverse declining sales. The pizzas and whatnot were only supposed to be launched in California and would go nationwide by sometime next year if successful. However, in honor of Shitshow Week, the smoothie giant has decided to bring it to NYC—or in the very least the University Pl

How to Make Money with a Food Blog? Gosstronomy asks Gary Vaynerchuk
Ah, the beauty of being in New York for six months is that I get to have access to amazing people at the top of their game. Last week I saw Gary Vaynerchuk – the uber-blogger (and occasional Conan O’Brien television guest) from WineLibraryTV – at a MediaBistro event, and I asked him about what it takes to bridge the gap between building a large audience with a food blog to commercialising that audience.

Feel and Enjoy the Cuban Cuisine Culture
Yesterday I mentioned that Via Argentina was a micro cosmos of the cosmopolitan cuisine. I have one more example of this true statement. At Via Argentina you can find a corner of Cuba which competes in every way, shape or form with Little Havana of Miami. This place is El Rincón Habanero. Rincón Habanero is a tiny place with only 10 feet wide of facade. Inside you will find six diminute tables, a small but totally-stocked bar and a large TV plasma. Inside you’ll also find a solitary but extremely friendly waiter. Its table cloths serves two functions; to cover the tables and to display the restaurant’s menu.

The Ledge Opens This Week in Lower Mills, Dorchester
The Lower Mills section of Dorchester is now home to a new restaurant featuring upscale pub grub and a variety of beers on tap. The Ledge, a gastropub that will have its grand opening on Friday, August 14, has already been open to private parties this week, as it has had a “soft” opening over the past couple of days. The restaurant has taken over the spot where Donovan’s Village Tavern used to be, in the heart of this quiet Dorchester neighborhood on the Milton line.
