A school field trip to Las Vegas part iii
After a delicious dinner at Nobu , we headed over to XS at the Encore . We were afraid that the line would be really long so we headed over at 10:00. Luckily, the line wasn’t bad at all! All the retail stores right by the club had free passes for women so we were able to get in without cover. Unfornately, the guys had to pay $30. Since we were so early, the place wasn’t too crowded at all. Plus, it’s so much nicer, larger, and more spacious than Tao so even when the dancefloor is packed, there are other places to dance without sweating buckets or even just lounge around and talk without the deafening music. Even if I had to pay $30 cover, it is still so much more worth it to hang out at XS than at Tao! Apparently, LeAnn Rimes and her new boytoy think so too since they were there on the same night that we were - I didn’t see them but then again, I really don’t care about them. Also, the wait staff was pretty good about letting us sit in the reserved sections when the guests hadn’t arrived yet. When we had to move, they were very apologetic and even accomodating – they told us that we were welcome to sit in other reserved sections that were not yet occupied. Score! What a nice rest for my tired, achy feet on 3 inch heels.

Rainy Days in Buenos Aires — Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina
Jump to the full entry & travel map Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina Rainy days in BA We have had lots and lots of rain since we last blogged. The weather feels almost as unpredictable as the English weather! On Friday, our last day at school, it was incredibly hot and sunny and we had a power cut all afternoon so had no air con in our little classroom. That evening we had a really big thunderstorm, which continued virtually non-stop until Monday afternoon.

Book review: "Dollars to Donuts"
Dawn Welch’s story of as a young Oklahoma woman who became the successful owner of the historic Rock Cafe , served as the inspiration for Sally in the hit Disney/Pixar animated film “Cars,” and then resurrected the restaurant after a devastating fire last year, would serve as compelling material for a book. But her first book, “Dollars to Donuts: Comfort Food & Kitchen Wisdom from Route 66’s Landmark Rock Cafe” (Rodale Press, 288 pages, paperback, $19.99), became a lot more than a biography

A Social Experiment Does Group Buying Really Work?
There is an interesting experiment happening on the web: Deal a Day sites offering a huge savings on things to do, see and eat in your community. One of the newbies entering the marketplace with a bang is FlyCoupon.com . Here’s how it works: Would-be buyers have until midnight to purchase a great deal at savings from 50-80% off, for cool restaurants, great retail stores, salons, sporting events, the list is only limited by your imagination. If, by midnight, there are the minimum number of purchasers, everyone gets the discount. If the number falls short, the deal expires and no money changes hands.

Tabla Mediterranean Bistro
My best friend and I ended up at Tabla last night for his birthday based on M’s suggestion. M didn’t say anything about the restaurant really, other than to suggest it when I said Sel Gris was unavailable. They offer a 3 course tasting menu which lets you pick an appetizer, pasta, and entree dish, or you may choose al a carte. We both chose to do the tasting menu. I also opted to order the set of wine pairings to go with mine. My appetizer : beet and buckwheat salad with ricotta di capra, succulent greens, tarragon Rounds of cooked and slightly sweetened beets were then layered with thin, similarly sized buckwheat crepes and then topped with leaves from a succulent and ribbon like curls of cheese. The succulent I wasn’t actually able to identify, not being the world’s most plant savvy person. The salad was slightly sweet (beets), slightly earthy (buckwheat), a little milky (cheese), and brightly green in flavor (succulent leaves). The textures also bridged a variety of categories. The beets still had a nice solidity, the tiny crepes were tender, the cheese was creamy, and the greens…. The succulent was the most intriguing and surprising thing about this dish, both in appearance, flavor, and mouth feel. They were firm and crisp, slightly furry, and your entire mouth exploded with juicy green flavor when you bit into one.

Fall, Mexican Food and Rollerblading!
MY RECENT BLOGGING: 3. The posts that have existed have been great (if I do say so myself ) But that’s only worth 3 points when you consider how bad I’ve been about posting. I suppose my real life is getting in the way of my online life… FALL IN NORTH CAROLINA: 9. Have I mentioned recently how much I love fall in North Carolina? I’m pretty sure I mention it at least once a day, and I would estimate about 3 days out of the week I harass Amy in the car in the morning (the 8th grader I chauffeur to school every day), ‘Amy! Do you see how beautiful those trees are??? Quick! Get out my iPhone and catch a picture!’. At first her response was excitement, and recently it’s become ‘You know you have 20 that look just like it, right?’. ‘No Amy! They don’t! Today it’s even more colorful and beautiful!’ -1 because of the inconsistency of temperatures. I must admit, I’m not too sad about the 70 degree weather we’ve had recently, but my closet is confused. Should I pull the sweaters out of storage or not? And when I do commit to wearing one, by midday I’m all hot and sweaty and need to change. BEING A MEMBER OF THE CLEAN PLATE CLUB… is overrated. Especially when it comes to Mexican food. But boy is it tempting to try. Hence why I leave full and disgusted almost every time. Friday night I headed to Torero’s , my favorite local Mexican restaurant, armed with coupons and an appetite. We left with some coupons to spare, and a strong need to throw up. This is what happens when you attempt to finish everything on the plates that are twice the size of your face. I rate this a 6 (let’s be honest, I still love the food and the experience or I wouldn’t keep going back).

Nightlife: 105 Rivington Rebrands Again As CV
Steve Lewis reveals that h e has been hired by none other than Matt Levine to provide a third redo of the lounge space in the lobby of The Hotel on Rivington. Taking a trip down memory lane, the THOR lounge first opened way back in 2006 , when the hotel’s opening was a shot across the bow of the historic Lower East Side. During the lounge’s opening run, those in the know had to tell the doorman, “we’re friends of Marcel’s in from the Netherlands” to get inside.

Couples Sans Souci, Jamaica – Review of a Romantic Getaway
Mid April 2009 my husband and I were treated to 3 incredibly romantic nights at Couples Sans Souci in Ocho Rios. “Sans Souci” is French and when translated into English means “Without a Care” or “No worries” which is a cute way to refer to Jamaica’s famous tag line. Sans Souci is a very special resort in that it is built around a mineral spring said to have healing powers.

The colonial Antigua — Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala
Jump to the full entry & travel map Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala After getting settled in the hostel, we were ready to start walking around Antigua. But the first thing we needed to do was to find a restaurant, since we hadn’t eat anything since we the crackers and juice they gave us on the plane. The staff at the hostel were extremely helpful, giving us maps, orienting us on where we were located and giving us tips on different restaurants, depending on the budget

Part Two of The Restaurant "Nevers"
Last week I posted the first part of this excellent list from Bruce Buschel: This is the second half of the 100 do’s and don’ts from last week’s post . Again, this list is for one particular restaurant, mine, which is under construction in Bridgehampton, N.Y., and will, with any luck, open this spring. I realize that every deli needs a wisecracking waiter, most pizza joints can handle heavy metal, and burgers always taste better when delivered by a server with tattoos and tongue piercing(s).

Guy Fieri to Feature The Little Depot Diner in Peabody Tonight (November 9, 2009)
Over the past few weeks, Guy Fieri, the host of the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives,” has featured a couple of restaurants in eastern New England, including a sandwich shop in Boston (Sam LaGrassa’s) and a cheap eats spot for Italian fare and diner food in Providence (Louie’s Restaurant). And this week, the affable and offbeat Fieri visits a tiny old breakfast and lunch place in downtown Peabody called The Little Depot. A diner that has been in this small North Shore city since just after World War II and resides in a classic Worcester Dining Car, The Little Depot features such items as pancakes, French toast, hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans.

Disappointing bruch – Nellie’s on 4th
Had brunch in Nellie’s on 4th St the other day and I should say right from the start that I won’t be going there again. I am not a big fan of Nellie’s in the first place – the menu is a bit too heavy for my taste, but that’s more of a taste-buds thing (I could never understand the idea of potatoes for breakfast…). But that’s not the reason I disliked the place: it’s crowded in the sense that there’s no room to move around the tables and you’re practically spitting on the person at the next table… And it’s filthy

Think Collaboration (from HHT Session)
Finding and working with collaborators is more important than worrying about competitors, said the conference organizers, Susan Schear of Artisin and Elizabeth Wagner of JC Geever . Potential collaborators include libraries (libraries will translate brochures and flyers into different languages, they said), hotels, faith-based organizations, chambers of commerce, business improvement districts, restaurants, government agencies, banks, businesses, book clubs, realtors, PTAs, etc

Pizza Party Coming to Braintree
A new restaurant is coming to Braintree, moving into a spot near the Quincy line that was formerly home to a neighborhood Italian restaurant. Pizza Party will soon be opening on Quincy Avenue in the East Braintree section of the community, and looks to be featuring such food as pizza, burgers, and subs, according to a job posting on the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development website. The site also mentions that the restaurant will have a children’s section for parties
