Key West Grill – Myrtle Beach SC
Heard enough about my vacation? I didn’t think so! How about a restaurant review… After my beautiful day on the beach , the whole gang headed back to the condo to freshen up. Earlier in the week my husband and I went out for a night alone and ended up at the Key West Grill at Broadway on the Beach for late night dessert. When we told my mother about it, she had to try it too so we decided that would be where we would celebrate our birthdays, in style. (Her’s being October 24, mine the 29th, and neither of us are giving out birth years!) What a beautiful place! Since it was the off-season, we were seated right away, at a table right by the deck (too cool for outside dining that night, unfortunately). We had a nice view of the lagoon and the Dragon’s Lair Fantasy Golf Course, which shot flames into the air every so often, to the amusement of my son, Andy. Broadway was so pretty, all lit up for the night, they use LOTS of neon. Choices of seating included large tables like ours, booths for 2 and 4, and of course bar seating. It was all marble and leather look, luxurious without being heavy. There was a live parrot sitting on a cage right inside the door.

First of all, today is Veterans Day. So, to all the soldiers fighting for our freedom all over the world, self salutes and honors you. Now then: It was such a beautiful day! Self worked at the Writing Center, then had late lunch with Zack, Liza, and Jonathan in Tribu again — yum! Yuuumm! Self’s pants are so tight right now, she can hardly breathe! She had lychee shake! And shared a bibingka with Zack! And now she is home, giving her tummy a much-needed rest

Plywood: Loreley Williamsburg to Debut in Two Weeks
[ Will Femia ] Because Radegast and Berry Park just aren’t enough, Eater operatives learn that Loreley , the uber-crowded LES beer hall and pretzel stop, will open a new Williamsburg beer garden in two to three weeks, just in time for the winter chill to creep in. A rep at the original location reveals that the beer and food menus will be pretty much identical at the new space but it will be a whole lot bigger (see above). One downside to this location that is not pictured but looms just across the street—the very loud BQE.

Twitterverse: Ryan Skeen Totally Loses It on the Twitter
Grub Street notices the twitters above and below (language, Ryan!), and correctly wonders if the volatile chef’s days are numbered at his restaurant du jour , Allen & Delancey . It’s the kind of public insubordination that would probably be a firing offense at any high end restaurant, but since A&D hasn’t had the best of luck with chefs, they’re probably in no position to give him the boot. As far as Rye-Rye’s reputation is concerned, this combined with his flightiness (this is his fourth gig in two years ) isn’t the best for resume building

In 3-Gängen japanische Küche genießen

RR-20: The Initial List
There is a new feature here that may be helpful only to you locals, but I am happy to present the RR-20 . It is a list of 20 places where I happily will spend cash at any moment. They aren’t necessarily what I consider the best restaurants in DC and the surrounding area (though at least ten would make that list;) but they are the ones that I implicitly trust with my evenings, afternoons, and well… money. I trust them to always be exactly what I expect them to be which is a terrific hamburger, sublime fine dining, very good sushi or anything in between. There is certainly a bias towards places in the city (leaving the city requires more trust than going around the corner) and places that can accommodate my preferences for dining at the bar.

The Most Expensive Tacos…
Did I mention I have a brother? He is 7 years younger than me, about 4 inches taller, and a whole lot smarter. I don’t say that about anyone, ever. But he really is smarter. (He is also single for all the ladies out there…I’d post his picture but I think he might murder me if I did). Anyway, because he is so much smarter he makes about 7 times more than me. If it were anyone other than my brother I’d be super jealous. But lucky for me he is extremely likeable and very generous. A few weeks ago he took me to The Roof Garden at the Peninsula Hotel. All because I did him a favor. I won’t get into that because my mom might be reading my blog. And again, she might be the only one reading my blog right now so I need to keep her happy. The Roof Garden is, well, on the roof of the hotel. On a gorgeous day, which this day was, one can sit outside and think they are in heaven. The servers are very friendly, the ambiance is SO nice, and sheltered from the insane traffic, the smog, and most of the unfriendly Angelenos, one can almost forget they are in Los Angeles. Well for about a minute anyway, until you see a waiter taking a series of ice creams to the pool, in a 6-cone holder that appeared to be specially made for the hotel. So the best thing in the world at this restaurant are the fish tacos. They are absolutely incomparable. The flour tortillas are like crack they are so amazing. I could eat 5 of those just on their own. And the fish just melts in your mouth and the mango salsa is delicious. The only glitch? The plate of 4 tacos is $24. Yes, that means each taco is $6. Okay to some this may not seem like a lot. But when my husband, daughter and I go out to eat we usually spend $30 total. And this is at a respectable restaurant like CPK or Cheesecake Factory. So spending 80% of our total dining-out budget on tacos seems a bit excessive. Needless to say I don’t eat these fish tacos too often

Recovering from Vegas
After such an epic , fun , and crazy trip to Vegas, I needed the weekend to relax and recover. Jeff and I hit up Tofu Ya , since a hot steaming pot of spicy tofu always hits the spot! The panchan dishes were not great – to be honest, I was a little disappointed! Where are the fishcakes, potatoes, or spicy jello? Luckily, the spicy tofu pot was excellent. Look at it boil and bubble! After lunch, we walked over to the Nijiya market. We passed by Beard Papa’s , so I just had to check what the flavor of the day was. I totally wasn’t planning on getting a cream puff until I found out that the flavor of the day was strawberry…my absolute FAVORITE! So of course, I treated myself to a cream puff as part of my Vegas detox. Look how beautiful this cream puff is, topped with its beautiful pink powdered sugar. Despite the lackluster panchan, Tofu Ya is very promising. Hurray for some good Asian food on the Westside for once!

Creekside Grill and Picnic Area at Former Fischer Flour Mill Site – Silverton, Oregon
Picnic Area at Former Fischer Flour Mill Site – Silverton, Oregon Originally uploaded by druttan One of my favorite restaurants for takeout workweek lunch in Silverton is the Creekside Grill at 242 S. Water Street — before you enter the downtown area. The sandwiches are good but the location is even better – across the street and a couple of blocks over from the Appeal Tribune office, where I work every Tuesday

burgers and edamame
A bit out of order, but to recap this past weekend- a new buger shop opened up in Evanston a month or so ago, called “Edzo’s”. Apparently its run by a big-name chef who has cooked in Chicago, Italy, and Spain and is supposed to be the “Hot Dougs” of burger places. Yeah, it was real good. Its cheap and simple, but really delicious- it actually tasted like McDonalds burgers, and come on, those taste amazing. The loaded fries were a bit too much though, I’ll go with the regular next time; but I will be returning soon. Here’s an article in the Times about it: http://themoment.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/27/grass-fed-edzos-burger-shop-illinois/?emc=eta1 That same night my roommate Will’s parents took us all out to eat in Evanston, at an asian restaurant called Koi. We’ve eaten there before, and it always seems to be either great or awful (I lean towards the latter). I got the thai chicken curry with white rice, which is I knew was good, and it was yet again. The dumplings we got for an appetizer were also good, as was the chicken satay. We also got edamame, which I had never eaten before. Not bad, but they just tasted like peas- not sure what the whole fuss is about them, I probably wouldn’t get them again.

Buca di Beppo
On Saturday night, after our fun outing to the Carolina Renaissance Festival , the Husband and I got together with Matt for dinner and a movie. ( Kath was out in San Fran enjoying the first ever Foodbuzz Festival!) The Husband and I had a gift card to Buca di Beppo that we wanted to use and it’s a great restaurant to go to with a group (anything larger than a couple). A couple could certainly have a date night here, but it’s definitely more suitable for larger groups. The only North Carolina Buca di Beppo is located right here in Charlotte outside of the Carolina Place mall.

Venezia Bakery & Cafe
European & Latino Cuisine in an Italian Atmosphere Warm, Fresh & Unique…Every Day! That’s what the sign says outside the Venezia Bakery & Cafe. And it’s true! Mrs. LanceAround and I had the pleasure of speaking with Ignacio Plaza, the Managing Partner of the Venezia Bakery & Cafe Did We Wander Into Venice? Ignacio’s grandparents immigrated from Spain to Venezuela where Ignacio was born and raised. He created the Venezia using the same concept as the bakeries found in his native Venezuela. His cuisine is a mix of European and Latino influences and the decor of his restaurant makes you feel like you have wandered into Venice, Italy.

Rumormongering: What’s Drew Nieporent Got Up His Sleeve at Mai House?
[Mai House on Franklin Street, as espied earlier today.] As the never-quite-acknowledged shuttering of restaurateur Drew Nieporent’s Mai House approaches the six-month mark , the question lingers: what’s Drew going to do next with the space? Word today from a tipster inside the Nieporent empire offers specifics on one intriguing possibility that aligns with another tipster sighting from a few weeks back

ArtichokeWire: @StevenKamali: Noah Tepperberg and his team…
@StevenKamali: Noah Tepperberg and his team from Artichoke are officially coming to the MPD, they won board approval in a unanimous decision tonight! Community Board 4′s Business License and Permit committee approved a beer and wine license for Artichoke West, not a full liquor license, and the application goes up for approval in front of the full Board later this month. According to a tipster, work on the former Red Rock space is already underway, and the owners are working on an artichoke beer to replace the artichoke cocktails that are not yet allowed. Accessories After the FactThe It bag died before the downturn. How companies are fighting back
It’s been a brutal year for the arbiters of all things luxurious. World-wide accessories sales, the engine driving the explosive growth of the luxury-goods industry over the past decade, are projected to decline 10 percent in 2009, according to Bain & Co., the first real decline since Bain began tracking the sector in 1995. “Consumers have lost 40 to 60 percent of their assets broadly in the U.S.
