Everything is material

The food: eggs bacon benedict Eggs bacon benedict at Jane's on the Common The story: Everything that those who are creatively inclined see, do, hear or feel is potential material, a possible source of inspiration. That’s one of the themes of Coco Before Chanel , the French film  about the early life of the fashion designer, and it’s what award-winning novelist  Miriam Toews said recently when she spoke at the special IFOA edition of the Humber Writers’ Circle that I hosted. The ‘everything is material’ line is an excuse I give too, to explain why I sometimes interrogate interesting people I meet, and why I blog about food when I should be working on my new novel

Buffalo Wild Wings Expansion and Grafton Station Update

Buffalo Wild Wings – one of my favorite places to watch football on Saturday* - has been such a success in Grafton Station they will be expanding the current location into the adjacent space. This gives BWW over 1,175± square feet of more space. Maybe now finding a table won’t be such an ordeal! Grafton Station is anchored by Lowe’s and is located on the I-580 off the Tassajara exit. Recent activity incluseds a signed lease for a cosmetic dentist and they are working on a deal with an Asian fusion restaurant.

Eater Inside: A Look Around the Two Day-Old Mermaid Oyster Bar

Click the image above to view the full photogallery. [ Kreiger , 11/10/09] @williamtigrett was right . The Mermaid Inn crew’s overhaul of the former Smith’s space, Mermaid Oyster Bar , is a pretty impressive restaurant “exorcism/reboot.” (What it looked like formerly .) And according to some early word from the Twitter, the Yelp , and the tipline, she’s already winning people over in some other crucial departments (food, oyster) and letting some down in others (service, cocktails)

I am guilty…

of watching America’s Next Top Model.  I can’t believe I admitted it either.  Why am I so hesitant to tell people I watch it?  After much soul-searching I realize its just because I don’t want to be considered as vapid and shallow as the show.  Unfortunately it is vapid and shallow.  Tyra tries to make it so much more by telling us that being on ANTM is much more than just being a “pretty girl” and taking a “fierce picture.”  It’s apparently about personality too.  So then why is Nicole in the final 2?  I’m not so sure ANTM is about anything more than ratings and drama but I am okay with that!  After dealing with real life all day long who doesn’t want to lose themselves in the ANTM world?  So now its just Nicole and Laura.  While I’m not crazy about the shorter girl theme this season (I think it’s so funny that at nearly 5′8″ I’d be considered a “petite model”) I do think that for the first time Tyra and her team have chosen the right 2 finalists from the bunch!  The past few seasons have been a bit of a disappointment, especially last season where I feel like Tyra just kind of gave up and the final episode ended so abruptly!  I can’t even remember who won last season, thats how unmemorable it was.  Anyway, I’m feeling too shallow to continue discussing ANTM so I’ll move on to the rest of the evening…Maya and I changed things up and met my brother at  Coupa Cafe  after work instead of going to the park.  We are crazy and unpredictable like that.  By some amazing miracle I was able to get to Beverly Hills from Santa Monica in 30 minutes, and I even stopped to get Maya from school.  Really, it was a day to note down in history as one of those perfect traffic days we all dream about.  We sat outside at Coupa so we could enjoy the great weather.  I enjoyed it for about 5 minutes before Maya said she needed to go potty.  When we came back I told Maya she couldn’t have anything sugary because she’s been on sugar overload all week.  She gave me a very sad look with her huge eyes and said, ”Okay Mama, I’ll just have a glass of water,” and then of course I caved.  So instead of ice water she basically inhaled this giant hot chocolate. I enjoyed a yummy decaf capuccino…I love it when they make a design with the foam… Good thing I drank it down fast because yes, Maya needed to go potty again.  My brother accused her of lying which she adamantly denied.  I agreed with him but I didn’t want to take that chance.  Maya knew I wouldn’t take that chance either so, we hit the restroom for the second time in 30 minutes.  Of course this time there was a line and so we waited.  And waited.  In the meantime I saw 2 guys go in and out of the men’s restroom.  That just drives me crazy! When we finally ambled our way back to the table it was freezing cold outside.  For Californian’s that means about 65 degrees.  Maya instantly declared she was cold and was ready to go.  So we left Coupa Cafe ’s restroom and headed home where Maya proceeded to Skype with her cousins for an hour.  And for that entire hour she didn’t need to go potty.   Naturally.

Nightlife: Fake Celeb DJ’s Ruin DJing For DJ’s

In another blow to the common man, actors, models and the like are now dominating the DJ world, snatching up residencies and corporate gigs from actual DJs who are trying to eke out a living at the craft. According to an article in W , hobbyist DJs like models Jessica Stam and Agyness Deyn, actor Leo Fitzpatrick and artist Nate Lowman can show up to a bar or corporate party with their iPods, press some buttons for a few hours and walk away with a five figure fee, while old fashioned DJs struggle to book gigs for a few hundred bucks. Is this wrong?

Sakura Express!

Every week when I drive to campus I pass by this pink and yellow Japanese restaurant called ‘Sakura Express’.  It catches my eye because on the window it advertises some difficult-to-find Japanese dishes like yakisoba and udon.  I’ve been meaning to try it out and finally gave it a go this Tuesday before a meeting on campus. CASH REGISTER TREATS: When I ordered at the cash register I looked to the right and was surprised with the most incredible basket of treats ever.  HAICHU!  My all time favorite Japanese candy!  Back when I moved back to the states from Japan, I would always harass my dad to pick up tons of Haichu when he went back for business, and was thrilled when I went to Epcot years ago and found some.  A couple of months ago I found some in a 7-Eleven in DC, so I wasn’t completed shocked, but definitely pleased   They also had Pocky, and appropriate babies dressed up as peacocks.  CLASSIC! FOOD OPTIONS: 9.  When it comes to Japanese food there are some definite staples in the states, but not all of my favorite Japanese dishes.  This place does a great job of covering more ground.  The classic sushi, hibachi and tempura were all available, PLUS udon and yakisoba.  There was no tankatsu or curry, so I have to take off 2 points, but I was still definitely pleased

Wine Down Wednesday

S and I took B (I’m really beginning to sound like Gossip Girl) out to Carino’s (a favorite of the Manhattan elite, I’m sure) last night for her birthday.  While I’m not just a huge Italian food fan, as previously discussed I am a huge wine fan.  Half price bottles of wine? Sign me up. Half-off! Both regularly priced around $50, at half-off, we were willing to try these wines that we would normally shy away from.  S and B both liked the Ruffino chianti, which was fruity and smooth.  The Russian River chardonnay was a little buttery for me, but complimented my balsamic chicken nicely.  Definite thumbs up for the Caesar salad and bread.

River Cafe, Thames Wharf, Rainville Road, W6

I’ve been to other Michelin starred restaurants in London – Chez Bruce and Pied a Terre – but River Cafe is the one that I’d go to all the time if I had money.  My boyfriend and I went there for our anniversary in July and absolutely loved it.  The room has been redecorated after a fire and is now bright, roomy and airy.  The service is friendly and relaxed and there’s nothing snooty about it at all.  The atmosphere is great, almost like a big house party – no dull banker types but interesting looking media types and – hurrah – a glimpse of Jade Jagger having a ciggie outside.  Next time I’d like to try the wood fired oven for pigeon or pizza, but instead had a wonderfully simple and tasty Tuscan style meal of pasta to start and fish as a main.  Basic delicious food like you’d get in a local restaurant in Florence, although with booze included its obviously not a cheap night.

Pizzeria Primavera, Berlin

The restaurant at the end of the universe

Imagine if you will - two Tibetans settled in England and two from Hubli, Karnataka, two Iranian sisters from the Netherlands and two Indians from below the Vindhyachal, all sit at a dinner table, one cold November evening, 1758m above sea level in the sleepy town of Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. Intermingled streams of English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Tibetan and Farsi flow in a conversation that is befuddling in its esoteric assortment of ideas and topics. The sheer abundance of ethnicities, the confluence of cultures and the milieu of languages is an intoxicating accompaniment to the repast that lies on the table.

Lenny-the-Cuisinart Makes His Kitchen Debut

Good evening, folks!  Better get cracking on this post or it’ll be morning before I’m done!  As the title suggests, I finally took my food processor out of the box.  It’s so sleek and shiny… I kind of just want to snuggle with it in bed.  But… that’s a story for a different blog Yesterday I got up very early to finish some work before going into my internship.   I drank a pot of coffee, opened my eyes a little wider, and finally started feeling my appetite.  I made a yogurt bowl with vanilla Oikos, a Gala apple and granola .  Hit the spot! There wasn’t a whole lot for me to do at work… I mailed some things, ordered some more things, and read some other things.   As vague as that sounds, I actually really like working there and am learning a lot about the industry!  No experience is bad experience in my book (with a few exceptions). I got off a couple hours earlier than usual and had some time to kill, so I decided to go next door and get a workout in before meeting my mom for lunch.  I fueled up with half of a (very stale) Chocolate Chip Clif Bar

Buckingham Palace is a Council House in Comparison — Bangkok, Thailand

Jump to the full entry & travel map Bangkok, Thailand So last night, rona attempted to take mic’s stitches out. After about 20minutes I scrubbed in but we weren’t having much luck, so today we went to the hospital. Met by staff at the entrance we were given fairly royal treatment – only thing that slightly concerned me was the constant coughing from the guy behind us (swine flu???) just kidding! it was a little creepy that they had pictures of jesus everywhere, including one of him playing scrub nurse in theatre (we later realised it was a christian church!) After the hospital, we headed off to MBK, which is a massive shopping centre
