South Coast Plaza Food Blogger Event

Recently, about a dozen LA and Orange County Food Bloggers and Writers were invited to a 2 day event put together by Lee Healey of Lee Healey Marketing Communications and hosted by both Lee and Debra Gunn Downing, Executive Director of Marketing of South Coast Plaza . The event centered around dining experiences at 5 restaurants as well as checking out a high end kitchen and cooking store. Since I hardly ever go down Orange County way, this was my first experience with all the places we visited and it was nice to find such great eating options down South.

As a part-time DJ and Karaoke Host in Chicago, I spend a lot of time hanging around the bar/club scene, and I’ve befriended many bartenders and servers over the years. When we’re having a particularly slow night, we’ll sit at the end of the bar together, sip some pops (aka sodas) and gab about “bar life.” The other night, I started chatting about tips with my bartender friend Heather. Heart on the bench

I know people who know people! (yay – yes I can now say such things – who would have thunk it ??  Little ole me?) And that little treasure of information had me across from a ramp, watching the most beautiful girls and guys strut their stuff (although not very happily at times) on the runway, sitting below a girl on a swing – wearing very little as well as massively delicious dominatrix heels. (You had to be there!) They played Madonna’s “Celebrate”  among other 80’s tunes and it was very difficult to sit still in my seat or keep the smile off my face. It was rather peculiar to see with my own eyes – that misery and boredom was a look not only worn by the models but by the spectators themselves

Crispy Skin Mountain Trout with apricot vinaigrette Trout makes the perfect vehicle for showcasing crisp skin.  Delicate and thin, the trout’s skin browns nicely and adds another element of texture.  The tasty golden bits are perfectly matched with roasted cashews and apricot.  This was our favorite dish of the night. Veggie Loaf with quinoa and pecan romesco on a bed of roasted cauliflower, sun-dried tomatoes and shitake mushrooms While this might not be the prettiest dish, it is incredibly rich and satisfying.  The serving is extremely generous bordering on ginormous.  And, Leon’s pecan romesco turns this roasted cauliflower into a vegetable that I’d happily eat every day. Golden Brown Halibut with shaved zucchini and summer squash Rich with butter, thyme and lemon, the slight bitterness of the zucchini was a pleasant distraction that held its own next to the halibut

2009 Business Showcase

FiDi: It’s been just over a week since avant-garde dessert man Will Goldfarb opened up his barbeque trailer Picnick, Smoked in Wall Street Park. In that short time, the place has been totally swarmed : people have gleefully submitted themselves to endless waits on steamy summer days (fully accepting that there might not be any food left by the time they get their orders in) just to get a taste of mad scientist Goldfarb and partner Kevin Pomplun’s Kobe beef brisket, pulled pork, and Bobo Farms smoked chicken.

Just weeks after high end Chinese restaurant chain Mr Chow accused the owner of competitor chain Philippe of stealing recipes and intentionally confusing customers—it all came to a head when they opened across the street from each other in Miami— The Brooklyn Paper and Grub Street pick up a similar story…about two Brooklyn banh mi joints. The hottest foodie craze to hit our little Houston foodie community is probably the Pho Binh trailer at I-45 south and Beltway 8.  Though it’s a good 30-40 minute drive from our house, we’ve made the trip down there for breakfast pho at least three times now.  Ok, you say, that’s nothing compared to the pho-natics who go every week, natch every day.  But may I remind you that I live with a (my mom calls him in a hushed voice, “very American”) stalwart who I have a difficult time dragging even to Houston chinatown?  And that’s at a reasonable hour for dinner.  For pho, I’m talking about a 40 minute drive for a foreign soup when we’re both hungover and cranky at 9 AM on a weekend.  When we’d both rather be sleeping in.  This stuff is good . My mom used to get pho all the time when I was growing up and I never understood the appeal.  Perhaps it was nostalgia, or maturing tastebuds, but as I got older I developed more of a taste for it.  Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup based on a richly simmered broth, to which various meats and condiments are added.  Meats can include rare beef, brisket, fatty and lean flank, chicken, meatballs, tripe, tendon, and so forth.  The diner usually adds veggies to the hot broth to taste, which are softened and cooked in the broth.  These include mint, cilantro, basil, peppers, bean sprouts, and lime.  Of course, you can’t forget the siracha and oyster sauce that are also used to flavor the broth.

3720 Oak Street Vancouver, BC V6H2M3 Tel: (604) 737-7728 a panda’s crave for Japanese food leads to Hiroshi’s Creations on Oak street… eating with Miss Mushroom again as most of our friends are either in co- op /working or on vacation/overseas without us =( … we nearly missed this place as there was much construction on the outside… a panda and Miss Mushroom we found out today that  much of the coincidences in our lives, that we have the same family doctor that’s just up the street !! Well almost the same, what a small world !! By the time we arrived it was already a bit after 1:30 pm on a Friday afternoon and the place was packed!  All of the tables and chairs were in use, in addition to a couple of people waiting for their take out… despite that, there were only two people working at that time, the chef Hiroshi and a lady by the counter… Lucky while our slow brains was contemplating what to do, take out or just wait, the people sitting by the bar window left and we quickly sat down.

I am in the process of wrapping up my business day getting ready to head over to the Saddle Peak Lodge for the Foxen wine dinner when my phone rings, it’s Chris the Sous Chef, “Hey can you stop on your way in and pick up 10 cucumbers?”, “not a problem”, I say, thus dispelling any doubt I had that they might not know that I was coming in. I stop by Vons and pick up the cucumbers and am on my way.  On my drive over there I was thinking about what the menu was going to be and what I would be doing.

Rabbi Lopatin’s Travelblog: 24 hours in Cincinnati

My wife and I and our kids packed up the car and headed on Saturday night for the great city of Cincinnati.  Just about five hours from Chicago, Cincinnati is in Ohio, but only minutes from Indiana – which feels like Illinois – and from Kentucky – the South!  Reform Judaism is still big in this town, and the original HUC branch has been given a lease on life only recently, and the great Reform synagogue, the Isaac Wise Synagogue (formerly Plum Street Synagogue) is still glorious.  But I want to point out three highlights of this trip that highlight some exciting things from the Orthodox and Conservative movements. We went to a wedding at Adath Israel  Congregation, which has been led for the past 18 years by Rabbi Irvin Wise (Reb Irv).  You have to see this shul: I’ve seen a lot of shuls of all movements, but this shul is stunning because for a shul of 600 members (or so I was told) it is huge!  It has a Hebrew school building that would be reasonable for a nice sized day school; it has a parking lot bigger than Detroit, Motown Conservative synagogues, and there is a totally unused grassy lot next to the parking lot that is equally as large.  The shul is even more beautiful inside, with a six year, multimillion dollar renovation recently completed.  Stunning and contemporary stained glass windows in the sanctuary, granite counters in the bathrooms, with a combo of automatic faucets and manual ones as well, presumably for those who don’t use electricity on Shabbat.  There were rooms and rooms, and a huge social hall where each table had its own spotlight to shine on the centerpiece.  This shul is a living monument to the glory days of the Conservative movement.  I have no illusions that Adath Israel must have its challenges which affect all Conservative shuls, and especially in the Midwest, but I urge you to go to Cincinnati and see this shul, and you will be taken back 50 years to the days when it seemed that Conservative Judaism would lead all Jews into a beautiful future as proud Americans.  Again, we all know the difficulties all American Jews face, but especially the Conservative movement, but you won’t feel it when you go to a wedding at Adath Israel in Cincinnati.

Small Batch Ketchup

I have be musing about the idea of gourmet ketchup for too many years now. It probably started in a college eatery in Pittsburgh, the Original Hot Dog Shop .  Students called it the “The O” and a large fry was literally the entire frier basked dumped over an ironically small paper basket.  These fries were frequently perfectly cooked and well-salted.  Needless to say, if you were going to gorge on that many fries in one sitting (and what self respecting college student could turn that many calories down?), you probably were going to eat some ketchup.  They had their own private label ketchup, but it didn’t taste like the thick, bright red, syrupy goop that I ate at home.  It was a deeper color, thinner and slightly spicier.  I wondered why people ate bad ketchup? Fast-forward some years, and I stumbled across Skillet Street Food in Seattle, WA.  So many have already sung its praises, I won’t go into details here (okay, I have to say that chopped sage on fries should not be missed.)  On my first visit, and most since, I’ve enjoyed their homemade ketchup.  Thinner than commercial ketchup and with a real tomato flavor, it re-invigorated my desire for the perfect ketchup.  I strongly suspect there is no one correct answer – different moods and foods will require different qualities.  The possibilities seem endless.

One of the best things about a big city is its variety of restaurants, so of course, before my recent jaunt I prepared a list of all the places I wanted to go eat. At the top of the list was an upscale vegan place with the unfortunate moniker, Fressen . In Germanic languages the word means “to devour feed like an animal.” I suppose they had their reasons for the name so I didn’t let the name put me off because Fressen has been named as one of the hippest vegetarian eateries in North America by VegNews.

Pomodoro Opens in Needham

An Italian restaurant has just opened up in Needham, replacing an upscale European and New American dining spot that closed earlier this year. The restaurant, which opened last week, is called Pomodoro, but it is apparently not related to the restaurants with the same name in the North End and Brookline, according to a Chowhound poster. Pomodoro opened last week in Needham Center, just east of the railroad tracks where Chapel Street and Chestnut Street meet Great Plain Avenue
