Dolly’s Pizza – Lansing

719 Brookside Drive Lansing, MI 48917 (517) 327-0077 Website Menu Another weekend on the road back in East Lansing for work.  I was on my own for a hotel, so I was on the look out for the cheapest I could find.  That’s not an easy task on a football weekend, but I was able to find one for under $50/night.  It was the Motel 6 on Saginaw Highway.  Not a five-star hotel by any stretch of the imagination..hell, lucky if it was one, but all I really needed was a bed for a few hours and it did serve that purpose and I’m sure I’ll be staying there a lot this winter.

100 Customer Service Musts!

Last week, Bruce Buschel over at the New York Times ran a column on ‘ The 100 Things Restaurant Staffers Should Never Do ‘.  It was very comprehensive, so much, in fact, that it had to be split into two columns. From the first commandment – “Do not let anyone enter the restaurant without a warm greeting”, to  the last “Show your appreciation for good customers with a free glass of port, a plate of biscotti or something else management approves”, Bruce hits the nail on  the head when dealing with Customers

Pie á la Mold

Last night, Bob and I went to eat at our usual weekend quick-dinner place, the Halfmoon Diner on Route 9.  I’ve mentioned it here before, and I’ve always had good things to say about it.  After last night, however, I’m rethinking a few things. Dinner was fine – tuna melt for me, pot roast for Bob.  Uneventful.  As usual, Bob ordered a piece of chocolate mousse cake to go.  Feeling frisky, I ordered  a piece of coconut cream pie to go.  I’ve raved about their coconut cream pie here before, and was looking forward to its creamy goodness. About halfway through the piece of pie.

A school field trip to Vegas part ii

We actually woke up before 12pm the next day and stumbled over to the Wynn for a delicious lunch buffet.  The lunch buffet on weekdays is a lot cheaper ($22) than the weekend brunch ($34) - the food selection is a little different but still delicious nonetheless.  I wish I had remembered to take a picture of it!  Damn, I’m totally slipping.  My absolute favorite dessert this time was the Bailey’s panna cotta.  I’m sad that flan is no longer a regular part of their dessert rotation but happy that these new and yummy things are coming in! After lunch, we decided to head out to the outlets for some shopping.  What can I say, we’re not really gamblers!  I didn’t buy too much but I did find a few good pieces at BR: I love bright colors, although my wardrobe doesn’t always reflect that.   I think this could work as a work or going out top – I love versatility! This pencil skirt isn’t very exciting, except for the fact that it was only $30 and it doesn’t make my hips look humongous.  Who-hoo!  I was excited to see a Ferragamo outlet there but I was unimpressed by the selection.  Plus, the items just felt less high-end in an outlet store.  Am I being a ridiculous snob?  I did see a nice wallet there that normally retails for $400 for only $200-ish but it was kind of dirty and old-looking.  Even though they probably have new and clean ones in the back, it just wasn’t very enticing.  Plus, Jeff probably wouldn’t appreciate my random splurge…I’m on a once a year schedule for my luxury goods.   Haha next summer just can’t come fast enough!  Afterwards, we headed over to Nobu at the Hard Rock for dinner.  Asian fusion cuisine can be pretty hit or miss sometimes…who wants to eat stir fry noodles at Tao for $30 when you can get a way more authentic version of it in any Chinese restaurants for $7?  (To be fair, there are other better dishes at Tao.)  Luckily, Nobu was absolutely delicious! Yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno – very fresh and well-flavored! King crab ceviche with avocado – too much avocado, too little crab but still good overall.

EaterWire: Le Gamin now Village Bistro East; Pepin Responds

MISUNDERSTANDINGS —In a Miami Times piece today, Jacques Pepin admitted to hooking up with more than 10,000 fellow cooks, servers, and bartenders in his lifetime. Now he’s in the comments to explain: “… I must be too old and not “hip” enough to understand that the TRUE meaning of “hooked up with” now means “slept with.” My interpretation of your question was that you were asking how many people I have encountered, cooked with, worked with, etc.

Union Square Lounge 2.0: The lounge beneath the Coffee Shop…

The lounge beneath the Coffee Shop in Union Square is getting a redo behind promoter Michael Gogel with hopes of attracting a young, Parisian crowd. Rather than focusing only on Parisians and those who they congregate with, one would think Mssr. Gogel would want to attract any customers he can get, since the Union Square Lounge (the subterranean space beneath the unfortunate Coffee Shop) failed the get any buzz or business when it first opened and no one has been clamoring for its return

Nightlife: The Five Worst Nights In New York

Halloween has thankfully come and gone, and looking back, the costume affair became a shitshow rivaling the most dreaded of all New York City nights, New Year’s Eve. New York should always have something for everyone, but on Halloween, especial a Saturday Halloween, the city is filled with private parties , over the top affairs , giant rip offs , and an anything goes attitude that transforms the island into a no-go zone for anyone looking to enjoy a night on the town without putting on a costume and pounding 1000 vodka sodas. Now that it’s come and gone, it seemed like a good time to rank the worst nights to go out in New York.

The Fat Cactus to Open in Lynnfield

It looks like a Mexican restaurant will soon be opening on Route 1 in Lynnfield. According to one of our readers (and confirmed by a check on superpages.com), The Fat Cactus will be opening in the spot near the Saugus line where Lucille’s Fine Chicken used to be (and before that, The Naked Fish). Over the past several weeks, various online job listings have directed applicants to the 325 Broadway address in Lynnfield, which is home to the Bostonville Grille, and several of our readers have told us that a Bostonville Grille vehicle has been seen in the parking lot of The Fat Cactus, so it seems likely that the Bostonville Grille is indeed behind this new spot.

An offshoot of Legal Sea Foods will soon be opening at a new shopping and entertainment complex in Dedham. According to a job posting on the Craigslist site and a board of selectmen meeting page within the town of Dedham website, Legal C Bar is looking to open at Legacy Place in this southwestern suburb of Boston, joining several other dining spots that have either recently opened, or will soon open, in this massive lifestyle center just north of Route 128. Based on the location currently open at Terminal B of Logan Airport in East Boston, Legal C Bar in Dedham will probably be a casual cafe and seafood bar with a chic, modern feel to it.

Sasso Is Now Lucca Back Bay

An upscale Italian restaurant in the Back Bay of Boston has morphed into a dining spot with a new (but familiar) name and some changes to its menu. According to the restaurant’s website, Sasso on Huntington Street is now called Lucca Back Bay, taking the name from its parent restaurant on Hanover Street in the North End. Sasso had been run by the Lucca family, so ownership remains the same, but the menu at the new dining spot is a bit different, with classic regional Italian dishes at mostly moderate prices.
