Applemania: McNally Taps Appleman for Bowery Pizzeria

Followers of the twitter feed for Nate Appleman , San Fransico import and the city’s biggest free agent chef right now, may have noticed he’s had a keen interest in NYC pizza. That, in addition to his purported one day stint at Williamsburg’s Motorino, makes it not so surprising to see where he’s finally landed after his abrupt departure from his West Coast restaurants A16 and SPQR. Grub Street reports that the potential next Iron Chef will be teaming up with none other than Sir Keith McNally on his new Bowery pizza joint , now called Pulino Pizzeria .

Eating our way through Rehoboth

My mom and I took our annual trip to Rehoboth last weekend.  We’ve been going for at least a long weekend during the summer since as long back as I can remember, and by this point we are self-certified beach food aficionados.  During the car ride there, we usually plan out the meals for the entire weekend, a very serious affair.  With only 5-6 meals and 3 ice cream opportunities, you can’t take a false step, or you might miss out on a rare delicacy for an entire year!  Alright so I’m being a bit dramatic, but as I’m sure you all well know, family food traditions are a key component to any annual excursion.

Fini’s Pizzeria Italian Ristorante, Lawrenceville GA

Fini’s Pizzeria Italian Ristorante has a formal address of 860 Duluth Highway, but more so, it tends to be on the Lawrenceville-Suwanee side of the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road – Duluth Highway intersection. As such, you can’t really see it from Duluth Highway. So, if you want a rule of thumb on how to get there from the Duluth Highway side, you need to enter the strip mall with the Chipotles and the Carvels, and then follow the various “arrow” signs back to Fini’s

Dining out on Oahu: 21 Degrees North

Vacations are an amazing, revitalizing, much needed break, but some things are a bit tricky when away from our cozy home.  Like cooking, which is not that easy in someone else’s kitchen.  After several days of “not-exactly-home-cooking” in a bungalow close to Waimea Beach, we treated ourselves to a dinner last night at  “21 Degrees North,” in the Turtle BayResort.  The name reflects its location on the planet, at 21 degrees north of the Equator.  What a gorgeous setting, we had a table window overlooking the ocean, totally romantic… Not to detract from the aura, the restaurant lightning was dim,  which meant bad news for blogging.  But, my husband managed to snap a few reasonably good photos (thanks, honey!).  First, the appetizer that we shared, foie gras potstickers, joining two of my favorite things in the gastronomical world. His main course was a  crab-crusted Hawaiian sea bass served over mixed beans and sauteed spinach, in a lemongrass coulis. Very delicious, with a quite stunning presentation… I had a fantastic pepper-seared ahi tuna, cooked to perfection (nearly raw inside…), served over thin ribbons of zucchini, carrots,  and summer squash in a miso sauce, with corn crisps (think about a thin corn pancake, crisp on the outside, tender and creamy inside).  Sorry, no pictures of my dish.

Eager for Uighur

This week’s column from the Empress in Good Living is a beauty, and extra fun for us to read because we were crash test dummies for one of these Chinese muslim restaurants with her – the Western Orient in Hurstville. It’s loads of fun going on these excursions (as we’ve discussed before , it’s so easy to get geographically locked into your own tiny suburban area of this city), and I can vouch for the divinity of everything Steph mentions in her Western Orient review. The waitress, Candy, and her mum, the hidden chef, were incredulous that a bunch of gweilos would enjoy their fare.

It’s all touch and go at CLO wine bar

It really is ‘touch and go’ at CLO Wine Bar .  When I was in NYC this week, I stopped by the bar, located in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle.   When you walk in, you are greeted by a friendly host who explains how to locate a wine on their unique menu system.  You hold your hand over the table and a menu screen appears and you use gestures to navigate through over 100 wines available.  The display gives you all the information you need about each wine such as producer, region, grape, vintage, price, tasting notes and bottle location in the bar.  Once you pick your wine, you walk over to the machine, insert your card and voila!  Every wine (except sparking) is hooked up to an Enomatic machine and gives you an exact 4 ounce pour of the wine of your choice…just make sure your glass is underneath the spout.  Then you can go back to your seat and enjoy your wine.   There is a small menu available to enjoy a cheese plate or charcuterie with your wine.   I thought the concept for this place was great, but I was hoping for 1 or 2 oz pours to allow for an opportunity to taste more wines.  Trust me, after a few 4 ounce pours, they will all start to taste the same.  Not only that, but your bill could be well over $100 for wine samples alone.  Now, if you ever wanted to try a glass of Krug champagne or Opus One without splurging on an entire bottle, then here is your opportunity!

Times Book Review Pens Love Letter to Times’ Frank Bruni

One benefit of holding a job of high import at the New York Times is that when you write a book, outlets line up to review it (Bruni Listage coming up, btw), including the esteemed Sunday Book Review. As it just so happens the Review is reviewing Brunz’s Born Round this very weekend, and according to a tipster with a copy (not yet online), it’s a looooovefest. Exhibit A : His writing has always been muscular and clear

Good News/Bad News: Permanent Brunch

East Village: When the much-delayed Lesly Bernard project Permanent Brunch officially opened late last month, people lined up from the get-go for their nonstop brunch offerings, which include an artisanal bacon bar and all sorts of other rich, breakfasty items. As for critical feedback, it’s not looking great for the place. People don’t necessarily bash the food, but many claim that the portions are small and overpriced, that the place doesn’t have their act together (they’ve run out of food on more than a few occasions), and that the space is overwhelmingly kitschy, in all things that can be fixed at this early stage.

How to win (Facebook) friends and influence sales

Hopefully you liked last week’s deep dive into Social Media, with our “best of” Twitter and Facebook lists,  because we’re just getting started. Today, there are so many companies that have ignored digital ads in favor of their traditional counterparts, ignoring that the digital ads come with a fraction of the budget they were going to use for direct mail, etc… Most companie are ignoring opportunities to connect with major online brands like Digg, Reddit and Fark. You could easily target those users and reach people who will never connect with traditional media

Cantina Laredo

This past weekend my family and I got a chance to try out the new upscale Mexican eatery at Polaris, Cantina Laredo.  It is a nice place with a nice atmosphere.  There is an outdoor room overlooking the new outdoor courtyard at the Polaris Fashion Mall, but it was too hot to sit outside.  It was actually a little  hot inside, too, though that may have been the Margarita. I had the Carnitas, pictured here: They were delicious-the meat fell right off the bone.  Tyson had the Carne Asada y Camarones, even though he ordered the Camaraon Poblano Asada: (yes, if you are wondering, that is bacon-wrapped shrimp) I think that the restaurant is still working out its kinks.  One cool feature is that they make the guacamole tableside while you watch.  I felt bad for our server, he was a little nervous I think, or perhaps too new to the job.

The Derby

Buffalo Grouper Sandwich The breading of this fried grouper filet, doused in Buffalo hot sauce, remained crisp for the duration.  Cooked to perfection with a super crispy exterior, yet, the interior was perfectly moist and flaky.  The picture above doesn’t do justice to the size of this sandwich. Blackened Grouper Sandwich Pan fried to golden brown perfection, this sandwich was equally gigantic and yummy.  Spices were applied wisely.  They accented the flavor of the fish to perfection without dominating it.  Sauteed Veggie Side Dish — buttery The Derby’s menu can easily be described as vintage bar food.  I find it comforting to know that these bar food classics are still around

catalina coffee

My expat Dallas friend, Joni (@jabuck1979, website here ), paid me a long awaited visit last weekend.  I miss having her in Houston so much, and took the opportunity to take her to all my favorite haunts (as well as discover a few new ones).  One of the things she lamented was a complete lack of coffee shops near her house, even a Starbucks, so of course I had to take her to the coffee places near my neighborhood in the Heights.  And since David Buehrer (@greenwaybarista, blog here ) isn’t open on weekends, we went to Catalina Coffee on Washington. Joni got a mocha and I got a latte.  The cozy, dark cafe was the perfect setting in which to sit and slowly savor our beautiful, smooth and soothing beverages.  As we sat and caught up I wished we could meet and chat every weekend, but if only once in a while, over these delicious coffees was the best way.
