Following the news that 55 year-old Pink Tea Cup is closing over on Bleecker and Grove comes some more sad news, just a half a dozen blocks over. 22 year-old Gus’ Place has been seized by the tax man. The Greek neighborhood spot (five years in its current location) could turn it around and reopen as quickly as Permanent Brunch, the East Village restaurant that was closed by the tax man for a mere four days

This is where the casting call comes in

Plans for a New Restaurant and Bar in Weston Center Voted Down

A plan to bring a restaurant to an historic building in Weston Center looks like it is not going to happen, at least for now. According to the Boston Globe, the proposal to bring an upscale restaurant, bar, and function space to the Josiah Smith Tavern and Barn on Boston Post Road (near where School Street and Church Street meet) was voted down at a Town Meeting session last Monday. (The vote was centered around getting additional funds to help build the restaurant.) The Globe article states that the Old Library, which is next door to the Josiah Smith Tavern and Barn had also been included as part of the proposed renovation project, with office space being added to the building.

Cincinnati Chili Craze: Today the New Yorker spotlights Cincinnati…

Today the New Yorker spotlights Cincinnati night at Edward’s, a monthly event where the Tribeca restaurant serves the city’s idiosyncratic thin and tangy chili over over-cooked spaghetti or on top of bland hot dogs. What started as a curiosity three years ago has grown into a full blown monthly expat reunion , and Edward’s owner Edward Youkalis (uncle to Kevin) is finding it harder and harder to meet the demand. Top of the Aughts: Platt: New York Dining Finally Found an Identity in the Aughts

In one of the first in what will be a month of end of the decade retrospectives across the internet, Adam Platt looks back on the aughts and decides it was decade where New York’s dining world really came into its own. No longer looking to imported French or Asian fusion techniques and traditions, New York settled on its own aesthetic, its own obsession—big city simplicity, a “bucolic vision of haute cuisine.” Citing Danny Meyer’s empire, along with Chang’s, wd~50, Anthos, Blue Hill, and most vitally, Craft , Plattypants asserts New York, for the first time, boasts cooking and a certain kind of restaurant you won’t find anywhere else in the world: The bar is designed for eating, not drinking…The menus are spare, single-page documents, which emphasize top-of-the-line ingredients and the farms they come from. There’s plenty of elevated comfort food on the menu…The technique is still top-notch, and the influences…come from around the world

Menu Dissection: Author William Poundstone dissects Balthazar’s menu…

Author William Poundstone dissects Balthazar’s menu to illustrate how restaurants are all subtly encouraging their customers to spend more . Menus typically highlight puzzles ( high profit but unpopular items ), place pricey items near the over-the-top expensive “anchor” dish (to make them seem bargains in comparison), and relegate affordable regular favorites to menu Siberia

Barlow’s Restaurant to Open in South Boston

A Brighton-based group that owns four restaurants in the Boston area will soon be opening a fifth dining spot, with this one being in South Boston. Barlow’s, which will be opening on A Street in the Fort Point Channel area, will join Orleans in Somerville, Devlin’s and Porter Belly’s Pub in Brighton, and The Warren Tavern in Charlestown as the latest venture from the Superior Restaurant Group. Based on their existing dining spots, Barlow’s will probably be a casual neighborhood restaurant that features comfort food and pub grub as well as beer, wine, and other drinks
