Selfish Christmas Shopping and In N’ Out is Here!

As many of you know the fast food chain In N’  Out has made it to Utah.  There are four locations opening in the next few months including one in Draper.  In fact, it is about 2 minutes from my house, which is mostly a blessing but also quite the temptation.  So far I have avoided the deliciousness mostly because of the long lines- the drive through still has long wait.  Opening week the drive through wait was over an hour! For the past two weeks I  have been sick and miserable (and still have a strain of it hanging on for dear life!).  Finally today I decided to treat myself.  I dropped my dad off at the airport and did a little  shopping- finally bought some snow shoes, a slipcover for my ugly sofa, some shampoo/conditioner/makeup, an entry-way mat, and Christmas cards.   I went shopping thinking of getting gifts for Christmas presents but to be honest I have already gotten most of my presents.   I have a few more to make but that’s about it.  This leads me a little room to buy some presents for myself!  Let’s face it sometimes a girl just needs to spoil herself! These are the shoes I bought.  They are called Bogs, and I know they are ugly but they are ultra comfortable, and  will be super in the snow.

Food Stuff: Love and a Grilled Cheese Sandwich, and, Oh Yes, the Royals

Peter de Sève knows how to appeal to children. After all, he designed the characters for the “Ice Age” movies and some for “Finding Nemo.” So his fancifully exaggerated and clever illustrations for “The Duchess of Whimsy,” a tale of royalty smitten by a simple grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of milk, are spot on.

I heart kutchay

Mongkok's Kutchay (Garlic Chive) Dumplings TO FEEL the love of the people whom we love is a fire that feeds our life.  Pablo Neruda said that.  (And Summit even posted it on facebook.) But when all else fails, there’s always food. After self-control won over the debate on whether or not I should get the Chotovelli I’ve been eyeing for months now, I figured that only food could give me comfort.  There were too many voices in my head – the kind that would make the House of Tudor send me to be burned at the stake – that I realized only a familiar taste to the palate could calm me down.  Oh yeah, and tell me that I made the right decision to put off yet another wristwatch purchase. I gave T750 at Glorietta 5 a final heartbroken – almost longing – glance and then I went on my way to dinner.  There, my choices would always be a toss up between The Soup Kitchen and Mongkok – funny that these two are actually across each other.  Mongkok won me over by virtue of having booths.  I thought that I could just get slumped onto the cushioned seat in a sulk.

Planning Events Along the Highline

Here are a list of  venues and locales along the highline where you can plan your next event.  While it may be freezing outside these venues are still real hot!! Standard Hotel, 848 Washington Street NY, NY 10014 212.645.4646 http://www.standardhotels.com/new-york-city/ A logical choice; featured in our May 24th posting, this hotel serves as the Highline’s anchor, soaring 18 stories above the now defunct rail-line.  Details about future venues at The Standard are on the nebulous side, but this summer expect the opening of five bars (one on the top floor overlooking the Highline) and two restaurants.  If you can’t bear to wait a few months for The Standard to reach full operation, then check out the bar adjacent to the lobby, which features a comfortable indoor area and an outdoor lounge equipped with cozy fire pits. Hotel Gansevoort 18 Ninth Ave.

brunch at Overwood

One area of the DC metropolitian area I simply do not visit enough is Old Town.  The only thing that really hold me back is accessibility – parking is tough and it’s a pain to get to by public transportation.  But once I am there I don’t want to leave.  It’s charming, full of great stores, and it offers a great selection of restaurants. This past weekend a friend suggested Overwood for brunch.  I had never heard of it but was promised a great meal.  They definitely did not disappoint.  Their brunch menu offers a selection of classic brunch dishes, a few with a twist, as well as several lunch and salad options for those brunch guests who aren’t in the mood for breakfast food. While I usually go for egg dishes, the chocolate Belgium waffle with Grand Marnier whipped cream on the specials list was screaming my name.  The waffle was sweet with just a hint of chocolate, so it was not overpowering.  It should have been a bit crispier, but the flavor was good enough to make up for that.  And the whipped cream was amazing – I have to try that at home.

It ain’t easy being green… WaPo Reports

Great article from the Washington Post highlighting the challenges of sustainability in restaurants, even if the intentions are good.  The article focuses on two case restos in the DC area: Founding Fathers, a 263-seat restaurant promoting a commitment to fresh and local ingredients, and Equinox, a 90-seat (expensive) restaurant basically doing the same thing. While the challenges are the same for both, the lesser-expensive Founding Fathers often has troubles truly sourcing its local ingredients, citing lack of clear reporting and cost.  And that makes sense; think about three turns in a night, that’s almost 800 meals, and that’s just one daypart.

Imagine, drinking a great Cabernet Sauvignon….Centre Ice

After 4 years at The Hamilton Convention Centre, Food & Drink Fest…the Festival with Taste is moving to Copps Coliseum .  The Food & Drink Fest team is incredibly excited about The Big Move and pumped to tackle the challenges of working in an unknown building, which was built for concerts & hockey games, and not to facilitate the needs of 35 restaurants, 50 wineries and 15 craft breweries…all at once!  The participating restaurants, wineries & craft breweries are happy about the move because it gives each of them more elbow room to create and represent their unique menu choices.  The participating exhibitors are also happy because moving to Copps allows for larger aisle spaces so patrons can chat with the exhibitors and enjoy their food & drink without being jostled or carried away by the crowds of people. Repeat customers I have chatted with are ecstatic because the move to the larger venue eliminates the 45minute long line ups to get into the show on Friday & Saturday nights

Papardelle with Rabbit Ragout at Travertine

Travertine opened this fall in the rapidly growing Bowery.  This 2,800 square foot, 58 seat restaurant features Italian inspired cuisine served by head-chef Manual Trevino (Dos Caminos and Babbo).  Some more inspiring dishes include the Long island duck breast with lavender roasted plums as well as the Papardelle with a rabbit ragout. Tavertine’s bi-level restaurant space has a mezzanine level available for private events.  This elevated dining area that overlooks the dramatic staircase inspires a feeling of superiority and seclusion that should accompany any private dining experience.  For elegant Italian cuisine in a trendy area, Dustan and Danae Cappelletto’s newest addition to the Bowery is an obvious choice.
