Getting Nostalgic: Remembering When There Was An Italian Four Star in NYC

There’s been a lot of talk these days about the potential of a new Italian four star restaurant in New York. Many hoped Frank Bruni or his successor Sam Sifton would give the honors to Michael White’s newest, Marea. Joe Bastianich and Mario Batali trying to get one by force of will over at Del Posto

Gourmet, 1941 – 2009: Caroline Bates, who wrote for Gourmet…

Caroline Bates, who wrote for Gourmet for over 30 years, shares some thoughts on the iconic magazine’s sudden demise earlier this year : ” It was really an unconscionable act … There was no sense of history of this magazine.” On the other hand, she also reveals that Gourmet actually had a budget for writers’ clothes , so there’s a chance that maybe not all the money was wisely spent. Seafood Feast at Bultaneun Cheongdamdong Jogae Gui

One of the things I enjoy about dining at Korean restaurants is that some of them offer tableside cooking where you either cook it yourself as in Korean BBQ or they’ll cook it for you as in Octopus Fried Rice or Spicy Crab Soup . So after reading an LA Times article about a Koreatown restaurant that specializes in a multi-course tableside prepared seafood meal, I knew that this was one place I had to visit and soon. The name of the restaurant is Bultaneun Cheongdamdong Jogae Gui, which translates to Flaming Clam Grill of Cheongdamdong and it’s in the Chapman Market Complex.

My Hero

Currently the hero of my life is taking care of the hero of my lifetime!  Conrad Hilton and his staff around the world have been taking mighty good care of my husband Richard. Now, this man knew what he was doing when he started his hotel service program! I don’t know how the Hilton Hotel employees and their service “system” manage to do it so well, but they have customer service nailed.  Over the past 10 years Richard has stayed almost exclusively in Hilton Hotels and usually comes back home with a good attitude partially because the hotel staff treated him well.  “Thanks Conrad; you have made my life easier too!” There are not many service organizations that please us these days.  I believe that there was a lot of emphasis on creating a good customer service experience back in the 1980s.  For a short time it was noticed in a lot of consumer relationships.  I remember purchasing my first computer and the great service that went into that sale.  Surprise!   I also remember buying a used car and getting terrific service during the sale.  Most of that is long gone.  Companies who had the word “service” in their corporate motto really didn’t mean it

Japanese Dining Sun #2

I was lured back for desserts by the seasonal Hokkaido menu (ongoing till January). Because I love pumpkin, I like the idea of a homemade pumpkin tiramisu ($6.50++). But the real thing was far from what I imagined it to be and I didn’t like it at all. Texture was coarse, flavour was so weird that I don’t know how to describe it! And the sweetness of pumpkin was sorely missing

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Today’s post is inspired by the always awesome M of Travel, Eat, Love, who recently wrote a post about things she’s loving right now (she also just moved her blog over to her very own domain! Go check it out!). It made me think about some of my favorite food items and places, and given that it’s the end of year, a traditional time for lists and wrap-ups, I figured I’d steal her idea write my own list! Keep in mind that this is ever-changing; it’s just a sample of what I’m enjoying at the moment. Favorite snack: Lately I’ve been mixing either almonds or walnuts with dried cranberries.

Foster’s Market

Whenever I visit Linda in Durham, Foster’s Market is our go to place for brunch. Our usual plan is for one of us to get the omelet special, the other to get the chef’s special, and then split them so we each get a little of both dishes. Whenever I visit, which is about every 2-4 weeks, the specials are always different, so I’m not too sure how often they change, but it’s at least bi-weekly

Dieting Advice – The Day Off Diet Review

The Day Off Diet is quickly becoming one of the most popular diet programs available for instant download online and unlike more expensive programs like Weight Watchers, which requires a monthly payment, The Day Off Diet is available instantly upon a one time purchase. The main reason that The Day Off Diet is becoming so popular is not the fact that it’s available for download instantly, nor is it the fact that it’s far more affordable than most dieting alternatives, nor is it even the fact that The Day Off Diet is essentially free for the first 60 days due to it’s 100% money back guarantee

The Shutter: Silent H to Close This Month, May Reopen as New Concept

A tipster this morning sent a sad email revealing that Silent H , a solid Vietnamese restaurant and a nice option near the Bedford area in Williamsburg, is closing this month : “He has plans to reopen, but won’t be serving Vietnamese food. (I’ve heard it could be Mexican-inspired.) I was kind of surprised to hear the news considering the place has great reviews and was even showcased in the New York Times for its Vietnamese sandwiches.” Calls to the restaurant confirm it is closing and may reopen as a new concept, but we were unable to reach the owner, who knows the extent of the revamp. Make a visit while it’s still around.

Shack Attack!: A Closer Look at the New Manhattan Shake Shack Sites

Click the image above to view the full photogallery. Because the Times article and the subsequent press release just weren’t enough Shack Action, we sent an Eater operative to the newly unleashed Manhattan Shake Shack sites—what will be a one story building on 86th Street and Lexington and the ground floor of the InterContinental hotel being built on West 44th and 8th Ave—to get a look at the present status. Both are, of course, in raw plywood states as they’re set to open towards the middle of next year, but let the imagination take over here

Ionie’s Caribbean Kitchen, Grayson GA

Ionie’s Caribbean Kitchen is on the right as you head from Snellville towards Athens on 78, and it’s pretty darned close actually: perhaps 3-4 minutes past the Mellow Mushroom. This was one of those nights where my wife had to work late and I was tasked with feeding my daughter. I wanted something different so the idea was to travel east down 78 until we saw something new and interesting.

"Yumm Bowls" for Holiday Company

One of my favorite restaurants in Oregon is  Cafe Yumm , one of the best spots for gluten-free vegetarian cuisine. This local buisness that has been around for 30 years now sells their sauce in the grocery store. Using the sauce makes a perfect quick meal for when you host company during the holidays.  My mom and I recently made our own “Yumm Bowls” while hosting family, which consists of a bowl filled with rice, beans, the sauce and all the fixings pictured here.
