Sal’s Pizza to Open in Norwell

About two weeks after reporting on a new Sal’s Pizza opening up in Woburn, we have just learned that yet another location of this rapidly-growing chain of pizza places and Italian restaurants is going to be opening, this one south of Boston. According to a job posting on the Craigslist site, Sal’s will be opening on Grove Street in Norwell (at the Route 53 intersection), a short distance south of the Hingham line. Sal’s Pizza (and its sister restaurants Mary’s Pasta and Sandwiches and Salvatores Italian Restaurant) are mostly located north of Boston, with no locations on the South Shore at the present time, so when it opens, the new Sal’s in Norwell will indeed be the first time many South Shore residents get to try the chain’s popular 19-inch pizzas and 1-pound calzones.

Santarpio’s Pizza May Open a Second Location in Peabody

A classic old-school pizza joint in East Boston might soon have a second location. According to both The Hubster and Grub Street Boston, Santarpio’s Pizza is looking at possibly moving into the old Bennigan’s spot on Route 1 in Peabody (the Bennigan’s in Peabody closed last year after the chain filed for bankruptcy)

The Powow River Grille in Amesbury Is Closing

A riverside restaurant north of Boston that features an eclectic mix of ethnic dishes and comfort food will soon be closing. According to the Daily News of Newburyport, the Powow River Grille in Amesbury will close its doors at the end of 2009 after being in business for about five years. The owners of the restaurant (who also own the Plum Island Grille on nearby Plum Island) are apparently closing the Powow River Grille because one of the owners is looking at some type of new business venture.

Beacon Grille to Open in Woburn This Winter

A new casual high-end restaurant and bar will soon be opening in Woburn. According to the restaurant’s website and Facebook page, the Beacon Grille is looking to open at the TradeCenter complex just north of Route 128 possibly as early as January of 2010. The restaurant will have a capacity of about 250, and will feature American bistro-style fare for both lunch and dinner (dinner only on Saturdays, and apparently closed on Sundays).

Latest Review: Picco Restaurant, Boston

The latest review on the Boston’s Hidden Restaurants Web site is Picco , a restaurant in the South End of Boston that features pizza and homemade ice cream. Located on Tremont Street in the heart of the South End neighborhood, Picco is a fairly small dining spot with a funky retro look that includes a soda fountain and a decent-sized outdoor dining area in the warmer months. While the restaurant is known mostly for its pizza and ice cream, it also offers soups, salads, sandwiches, calzones, and pasta dishes as well.

Are Travel Agents Extinct?

Quite & Peaceful I was presented with that question the other day at a chamber mixer.  I guess with the internet available to most of the world it would seem that a Travel Professional had gone the way of the dinosaur.  Not so!!  We are alive and well.  In fact more than ever people are turning to a Travel Professional to help them sort through their “information overload”.  How do you know you have the BEST deal, the RIGHT supplier, the PERFECT location and whether or not you are missing any “specials” not available to the general public?  Is your stateroom on that cruise line above/below the dance floor or casino?  What’s the difference between the many cruise lines out there?  Is “all inclusive” the same on every ship/resort?  Which ones really include everything – wines, premium spirits, soft drinks, bottled water, shore excursions, specialty restaurants, and gratuities?

Sunday, a day of rest?

Not for us.  We were up at the crack of dawn as usual but at least this time I didn’t bother with the pancakes.  Instead we had cereal and called it a morning.  While Ali was on a 2 hour conference call it fell to me to entertain Maya.  So we engaged in one of our favorite activities – we cleaned and organized.  I am a bit obsessive and it appears Maya is following in my footsteps as it was her idea.  We started with the kitchen where she vacuumed while I did the dishes.  Then we made our way to the living room where we found and sorted through about 50 different wires and cables that Ali had stored away hoping I would find them.  Maya aptly noted, “Dad is just one big mess, Mama.”  We worked up an appetite and went to one of our favorite restaurants, Jack n Jills  in Beverly Hills.  The food is great, the wait not so much.  After waiting 25 minutes for a table we were finally seated.  I ordered my usual egg scramble with avocado, basil, goat cheese, and spinach.

Mr. Gyros

The year was 1997.  I had just stopped by  Mr. Gyros for the Gyro Plate with Beef and Lamb.  When I got home with my bag of takeout, I realized that they had forgotten the pitas.  I called the restaurant to ask them to get my pitas ready, so I could run back up and grab them.  The owner said, in his thick accent, “Oh sure, I remember you.  You’re a regular customer.  Do you live far from here?”  “Just a couple of blocks,” I said, “I can come back.”  “No, no.  It was my mistake.  I will bring them to you.  What is your address?”  I told him.  “I’ll be right there,” he said

Singapore to Chiang Mai – tuktuktukkuttuktuktuk.. — Chiang Mai, Thailand

Jump to the full entry & travel map Chiang Mai, Thailand After our well-deserved holiday in Indonesia, we arrived back in Singapore to finally do some proper travelling again. Fortunately it could all start with the necessary comforts, as a couple of friends had kindly offered their outstanding apartment to us whilst they were on holiday! We had a couple of days to explore Singapore and off we went with the Lonely Planet and 2 cameras in hand. The easiest way to summarise Singapore is that it is all about eating and shopping, stuffing your face and spending cash, culinary treats and buying nice stuff and oh, did I mention the food is pretty decent and the shopping malls are huge (and air conditioned)?

Break Bread At Le Pain Quotidien

A gray and hazy morning, filled with an incessant drizzle of rain…made even worse by a bluster of wind every now and then – all in all the City doing its best to ruin my mom’s fresh new cut from Bumble and Bumble.  In town visiting for the weekend, I needed a warm place close by to take her for brunch.  Thank god for Le Pain Quotidien (pronounced luh paN koh-ti-dyaN) and its 19 locations in Manhattan – another in Westchester but that’s too far of a trek for a bread basket. French for ‘daily bread,’ Le Pain Quotidien first cropped up in Brussels and then made its way (thankfully) to the States.  With a low-key West Coast vibe, each ’seat yourself’ location includes a long communal table as well as individual areas for anti-social seating (i.e. for my mom and I).  The flooring and furniture include reclaimed wood and recycled Gypsum, lit with energy-efficient lamps.  Even the corn-based disposable cups and spoons are made from potato starch to degrade completely within a week or two.

The Dunaway has been Done Away With

Well, it appears to be official…The Dunaway Restaurant, which is located on Marcy Street alongside Strawbery Banke (and was recently sold), has been repainted and all its old signs have been removed.  This leads me to believe that The Dunaway has officially been done away with.  I’m still waiting for word on what might reside in the building going forward….right now it looks to be a new restaurant with an anticipated opening date of Spring 2010, see the old website here .

Fancy Nancy

Maya let me sleep in this morning until 6:15 am, so I feel very well rested today.  I decided to make use of the early morning start to make waffles using my pancake recipe .  I thought I was being a good wife/mother.  I was pretty proud of myself actually.  That was until Maya walked in to the kitchen and told me she wanted cereal and milk and not waffles.  Naturally, had I not made waffles she would have wanted them.  I was pretty annoyed.  So was she.  We exchanged words and they weren’t pretty.  I “removed myself from the situation” and went for a run.  When I came back things weren’t much better but I was determined to soldier on.  I’d actually planned an activity for a change and come hell or high water we were going to follow through.  So we got all dolled up and headed out to the Borders’ Fancy Nancy event.  I think I was more excited than Maya.  When I got on the 405 I was even more excited because the new carpool lane extension was finally open!  My excitement was short-lived, however, thanks to this guy.  It never ceases to amaze me when people drive in the carpool lane at 60 miles an hour. Fancy Nancy was a success!  We listened to 3 stories, we had snacks, we did arts and crafts.  But when the raffle winner was announced things turned ugly.  A bunch of little girls in fancy outfits stormed out in protest.  We were included in the mass exodus.  We headed to my mom’s place for lunch.  After several assurances by her that she was still reading my blog (thanks Mom) we ate some good food.  Probably one of the best meals I had all week.  Somehow I didn’t inherit her cooking abilities.  Such a shame
