Living the Slow Life — Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
Jump to the full entry & travel map Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep Travel plans in Lao never seem to go smoothly. Gary, Lee and I had booked tickets on the VIP bus through two separate companies, and so got two separate tuk tuks to the main bus station just out of town. Turns out they had overbooked the VIP bus (by about 50 people by the looks of things), so we had to get two different mini buses instead.

Peru, the new Paris…(?)
But with a slightly different kind of dog. And restaurant. I took this the other night after eating dinner in a slightly sketchy area adjacent to my hood. This place was one of the ubiquitous “ pollo broasters ” that seem to be 4 to a block. Quite nice actually. Its spit roasted chicken and for a large family you can get a whole chicken with the fixings for a good price. I had just finished a nice meal of 1/4 chicken piled upon a heaping of fresh-cut french fries and along side the strange salads they make here (bad lettuce, cucumbers, beets, a nice creamy dressing) washed down with an old school small glass bottle of Coke (a total of $3.65) and as I got up to leave was greeted by this scene. I was bitten by a beast of a dog in a church garden (does that mean I am a devil incarnate ?) recently on vacation (actually behind the church in the photo from the last post in Chivay) and still have a bit of PTSD. Fucker ripped out a perfect hole in my favorite jeans and got me twice in the thigh (luckily had 3 rabies vaccinations for the work in the jungle). Anyway, this pit bull mutt was scabby, scarred and scary and blocking my path so I took pause. He actually ended up being pretty cute and was harmless. (It’s funny how dogs left to their own devices are pretty nice with people and the ones kept by people can turn menacing)

Remember the 3 Bs at the Lazy Ox Canteen
I can’t remember a restaurant before Lazy Ox Canteen that received so much positive press at its inception. It popped up on Twitter, food blogs, and will already be participating in Dine LA restaurant Week and it is only a few days past its month birthday. Perhaps it is because the Marketing Maven herself, Miss Sauce LA , has helped on the social media and press side.

The Best
Weekends Finish long work week. Head to Jess and Jim’s for BBQ. Drink lots of vodka tonic. Eat great food, enjoy funny conversation. Go to Tucson. Have dinner with Lisa. Meet Dad and Laura for drinks and local dive Irish Pub. Drink too much with dad over deep conversation. Go hiking the next morning and enjoy the company and the exercise.

dining alone
When I first moved to Japan, I learned how to dine alone. I didn’t know alone at first and when I did start meeting friends, we didn’t get the chance to meet up at every meal so I learned to be comfortable with eating alone. I didn’t cook as much back then as I did now and the ingredients for what I wanted to make were a bit hard (and expensive) to come by so I ate out a lot.

restaurant week: whisknladle
It’s Restaurant Week here in San Diego, which means getting to eat 3-course meals at places for the price of an entree! Even though it’s been raining buckets and gusting wind (so much that they issued tornado warnings for LA, Orange, and San Diego counties), my friend and I braved the elements in the name of trying a new restaurant.

Kaya Jam
Kaya Toast When I went to Hong Kong a couple years ago, my friend took me to an American equivalent of a coffee shop and ordered me a big cup of hot milk tea and kaya toast sandwich. Kaya (or Sri Kaya) jam is a Malaysian coconut egg jam that’s made from coconut milk, duck or chicken eggs that’s flavored with pandan leaf and sweetened with sugar.

January 20, 2010 – Great Charlottesville Restaurant
Solving all the problems of the world Today, I had lunch with my friend, Anna! We met while working at W&L and now work together at UVa. It’s all part of our master plan – muahaha! We usually meet for Thai food, but to be more in line with some New Year’s resolutions, we met for salads and soups at Feast! Feast! is one of my new favorite restaurants in Cville, even though it’s not new

Restaurants 101
The Celiac literature is full of restaurant advice that is pretty off-putting: go at off hours, you’re told, tell the maitre’d what your food issues are, see if they’re willing to work with you. There may have been a time when Celiac was so unheard of that this was actually necessary, but our experience is: go when you’re hungry; maybe don’t start with something that has “pizza” or “bakery” in the title, but otherwise count on the food service professionals to understand your limitations and work with them

Scoutmob launches in Atlanta
Scoutmob has officially launched in Atlanta to the disappointment of many people in San Francisco and New York who were hoping to get it first. So, what is Scoutmob? In a nut shell, Scoutmob convinces some of the best restaurants in Atlanta to offer up limited time incentives and then emails their database one hard to resist mobile deal each day. If you like the deal then you send it to your phone and you typically have a short time to take advantage of the deal

Nightlife: Checking in on the Inaugural Rusty Knot Party Bus Ride
Always true to his word, Ken Friedman did indeed roll out the Rusty Knot Party Bus last night, and EV Grieve made sure to stop by the 1st and 1st pickup location only to observe. According to EVG , the bus was two minutes early and attracted twelve revelers, but sadly, “no one was in costume. And only two people sort of squealed while boarding.” Friedman reports that “it was a HUGE success last night,” and that the bus will make a return every Tuesday.

Good News/Bad News: The Early Word on Michael Huynh’s LES Newcomer, Mikey’s
After a generous weekend of free burger handouts, Michael Huynh opened his latest new restaurant, his LES Rush Hour replacement Mikey’s Burger, for business last month. Despite enthusiastic tweets announcing the free burgers, it took longer than usual for the internets to chime in and assess how good (or bad) those Southeast Asian-inspired burgers actually are. Now that they’re in, the reviews are somewhat mixed: The Great News : Only two Yelpers have taken the time to rave: “GREAT burgers.

Chefs on TV: Emeril Confirms New Talk Show on ION Network (…Bam?)
In a time when the TV airwaves are flooded with a constant stream of new chef-driven cooking shows, what’s on old timer like Emeril Lagasse got to do to keep up? How about ditching food TV entirely, and starting his own chat show.
