Would You Like to Experience Umbria This Fall?

In late October 2008, I spent an amazing week with my friends Bill and Suzy Menard at their villa Fattoria del Gelso just down the road from Assisi. I wrote about many of my experiences in our special report on Umbria . We ate our hearts out (the villa cook Teresa is not only a doll but an amazing chef), visited vineyards (lots of wine tasting) and small charming towns, ate some more at some of the region’s best restaurants, explored the history of Assisi, shopped for ceramics, took a pizza making lesson, visited Perugina and learned how to make chocolates, watched the olive harvest, roasted chestnuts and drank wine in front of the villa’s fireplace and chatted late into the night.

Rolymie Bakery – Edmonton, Alberta

Rolymie Bakery 1083 Knottwood Road East 780.450.1319‎ I’m going to start this post by saying, Filipino cuisine falls into the ‘rarely ventured’ category. Even with close Filipino friends, I rarely, if ever, get to enjoy the food of this multi-island country. When Anthony Bourdain visited the Philippines last season, I related to his experience almost instantly; for a country that is well represented by population , they are, without a doubt, highly underrepresented in the food world.

The family that sight-sees for days together…

Had a fun weekend with Mom, Dad, my sister Steph and my 6-year-old niece Sonja. The timing of their visit coincided with the 7 th  anniversary of the Iraq War as well as the House vote on healthcare reform (which just passed tonight; yeeaahh!), so we stumbled on a few larger-than-usual protest demonstrations as we soaked up the spring sun

台湾游记, Dec. 6 – Dec. 16, 2009, Day 6, Tainan Part I

台湾游记 Day 6, Tainan, Thursday, December 11, 2009 Today we’d have a chance to take 高鐵 for the first time to Tainan where I stayed four years for college after graduating from high school. It was 43 years ago near the end of summer when my parents took me on a 慢車 ”man4 che1” from Taizhong to Tainan on the day of registration for all new students. 慢車 was a slow train which stopped at every station between two cities

Chorizo Red Potatoes

This weekend was the first time in a while that I was excited to get things at the green market. Perhaps it was because it was sunny and beautiful and feeling like spring outside? I bought jonagold apples, red fingerling potatoes, mushrooms, lettuce, a red onion, and two fillets of skate

A Day In Honolulu

Welina Mai, Greetings!  Fate has us traveling to the island of O’ahu, the Gathering Place , for medical reasons.  More on what those reasons are in my next post, but it ties directly into what’s happening with the whole health care debate going on in Congress tonight. There’s a reason why O’ahu is called the Gathering Place.  Early Hawaiian’s realized the significance of the location of O’ahu.  In particular, on the Island of O’ahu, is the city of Honolulu, located on the leeward side of the island, it’s name in Hawaiian literally means “ Sheltered Bay “. Diamond Head A recognized natural monument like noting else in the world.  Diamond Head beckons visitors to come play on its beaches.  Relax under the palms.  Enjoy the warm tranquil breezes.  It’s therapeutic and healing for both the body and soul.  Here, you can learn to surf the waves, or surf the multitude of shops.  Explore the land above, or the waters below.  There is no end to the activities you can choose from to do.  Or you can just park yourself along the water’s edge and do nothing but relax.

Golden Swan

I’ve got company in town!  What a great opportunity to show off some of our great restaurant finds and have a good excuse to go out for nearly every meal in the coming week! My brother’s flight landed in the earlier part of the morning on Saturday, so, what better way to kick off a “welcome to Vancouver” than with Dim Sum?  We hopped on the bus and go to Golden Swan at around 11:30 AM – the big “rush” time for this restaurant

Eastern Standard

We start off with the cheese plate. It was an all milk plate with: Veenweide Kaus (Holland), Camembert Chatelain (Normandy) and Keens Cheddar (England). I think that the cheddar was my favorite, it was a hard cheese but it was smooth

Uncle Fatih’s Pizza

So it’s 6 PM after a long day at work, and I still have at least 30 minutes before I get home.  Lucky for me, I can grab a quick snack between switching from the skytrain to the bus on my commute home! Uncle Fatih’s Pizza (note: it’s note “Faith” and hopefully not “Fatty”!) is located right across the street from the Commercial/Broadway skytrain station.

Loveless Cafe – A Nashville Tradition

Clouds and rain have blotted out the blue skies we’ve been enjoying.  Despite the ugly weather, my mom came to visit me today and we decided to venture out to Loveless Cafe, a famous Nashville establishment renowned for their amazing homemade biscuits.  I’m not kidding about the “famous” part; they have been featured on the Food Network and Martha Stewart’s show.  The walls of the lobby, I suppose you’d call it, are covered with framed and autographed pictures of country music stars, including one of my favorite groups, Lady Antebellum.

Sorellina

Pappardelle with rabbit ragu Walking into Sorellina at 1 Huntington Avenue, I already knew I was in for a treat. I had heard nothing but rave reviews of Chef/Owner Jamie Mammano’s sister restaurants: L’Andana ( located outside the city in Burlington MA ), Mistral ( my next stop for restaurant week! ), Mooo… ( I visited last year& am searching for a special occasion to return ), and Teatro ( a theater district gem ).

Bangkok to Laos – Luang Prabang

4th March I woke early on Australian time, but my early start wasn’t necessary; checkout was smooth (and a pleasant surprise that they hadn’t charged me for the breakfast, dinner or drink because I had arrived late the night before!), a taxi was readily available and then the drive there was at over 100km/h! A little disconcerting, but the traffic was light and he seemed to be in control. Before and after check-in, I could take in the amazing Suvarnabhumi airport, which I hadn’t when I arrived. It is a beautiful building with huge windows and massive pieces of what I assume is fabric reflecting upward-pointing lights back down to the clean white floors and metal railings
