Spain to host “dagon” concert in Hanoi

The Spanish embassy in Hanoi will hold a concert in early October to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and the European country’s National Day. It will feature the “Dragon,” a legend that associated with King Ly Thai To’s royal proclamation to move the royal citadel from Hoa Lu to Thang Long in 1010, and “Fire,” which is often used in traditional Mediterranean festivals. The concert, which is a combination of music and dance, will last for 55-60 minutes.

Kuta in Lombok

I was eager to visit Kuta on my last sojourn to Lombok mainly out of curiosity. That, and the fact so many people had told me of its pristine appeal to travellers as well as being a good surf break. This tiny village on the sweeping bay of white sand and coconut palms was refreshing and the total opposite to that of its counterpart on the sister island of Bali .

Inspired by Iceland: A push for summer travel

Travel to Iceland this summer Since the initial eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, the world has become an awestricken audience to Iceland’s state of well-being.  While ash loomed over Western Europe and passengers remained stranded across the globe, all eyes looked toward Reykjavik . Fortunately, only a small percentage of the country has been affected by the ash, but unsurprisingly, Iceland’s visitor numbers have dropped drastically since the event. Fear without facts has kept visitors at bay, but the reality is that Iceland’s infrastructure is still safely intact

Blast From The Past: Riding The Rails to Miami

On an evening in August of 1961 I was one of a few hundred 14-16 year old kids who boarded a train at Seattle’s King Street Station bound for Florida on our first big-time adventure trip. Although American Airlines had ushered in transcontinental travel on Boeing’s new 707 two years earlier, the heyday of the commercial jet airliner was yet to come and this was still the era of passenger train travel in the U.S. After digging through old family photo albums and researching the history of the train lines that provided passenger service between the two cities, I believe that the train I rode was the Northern Pacific Railway’s “Mainstreeter” (shown here near Missoula, Montana

Cheap Hollywood Getaway

Los Angeles Want to visit a pre-historic Tar Pit and attend a taping of The Tonight Show in the same afternoon? Travel no further than Los Angeles , CA, home of the Hollywood Hills and an incredibly diverse range of cheap attractions. A vacation to Tinsel Town may seem like an idealistic retreat to some, but flights to Los Angeles can be surprisingly affordable.  Virgin America offers many June flights from the East coast for less than $300.  When I visited LA last May, my round-trip non-stop flight from Boston to LAX cost $179.

Time to say no to the extortionate cost of hotel internet access

I have stayed at a number of hotels, primarily in the UK, and the cost of internet access annoys me. I do not mind paying a few pounds for access to the internet, but, some hotels, especially the bigger chains are ripping off customers by charging as much as £19.95 for 24 hours access
