My Hero

Currently the hero of my life is taking care of the hero of my lifetime!  Conrad Hilton and his staff around the world have been taking mighty good care of my husband Richard. Now, this man knew what he was doing when he started his hotel service program! I don’t know how the Hilton Hotel employees and their service “system” manage to do it so well, but they have customer service nailed.  Over the past 10 years Richard has stayed almost exclusively in Hilton Hotels and usually comes back home with a good attitude partially because the hotel staff treated him well.  “Thanks Conrad; you have made my life easier too!” There are not many service organizations that please us these days.  I believe that there was a lot of emphasis on creating a good customer service experience back in the 1980s.  For a short time it was noticed in a lot of consumer relationships.  I remember purchasing my first computer and the great service that went into that sale.  Surprise!   I also remember buying a used car and getting terrific service during the sale.  Most of that is long gone.  Companies who had the word “service” in their corporate motto really didn’t mean it

It’s always good to get on the road again, this time it was down to Alice to meet Erica who had a conference down there. It is a long way south of Darwin, 1500km to be exact. After filling up the spare 20L jerry can, filling the cooler with ice and loading up the car it was time to get going

Hotel Amenities: Wi-Fi, Plush Linens, Minibar, and ROCK STAR CHEF?

For lack of a better term – I am a “foodie.” I mean, who isn’t nowadays.  Thanks to the success of Top Chef, Hell’s Kitchen , and the like, every Mac-N-Cheese eating, sugar cookie burning schmuck is ranting and raving about the stylistic approach to sous-vide cooking, idolizing celeb chefs like rock stars, and detailing the complexities of pork belly and bone marrow.  (With that said, if you are yet to taste either the belly or marrow, you have my sympathy.) However, a great restaurant does more than just serve up good food, delivering a certain level of shock-and-awe, mesmerizing the guest and making them come back for more.  Hmmm, sounds a lot like what a great hotel is supposed to do, right?  For that reason, hotel restaurants are no longer a by-product of the hotel itself, but instead, a leading demand generator and a hotel marketers dream. I didn’t realize the marketing power of a great hotel restaurant until I spent time working at a Relais and Chateaux resort and restaurant in the British Virgin Islands

Booking Online – Killer-Solution for Tour Operators?

Nowadays, moving a business from offline to online becomes a sort of good-style marketing among large and medium companies. If a company does not have at least a promo-website, that is considered to be either as oldie ignorance or as a scoped marketing. Indeed, the Internet sales are in the speedy reincarnation after the painful 2002 dotcom-crash

Hotel points devaluation. Who’s to blame?

People are pissed about Hilton’s loyalty points devaluation next year, and I don’t blame them.  As some of the company’s most loyal guests consider bringing their loyalty elsewhere, the likes of Intercontinental, Marriott, and Starwood are woo’ing them with promotions and all this chit chat about how their points will remain at the same value.

Here are a list of  venues and locales along the highline where you can plan your next event.  While it may be freezing outside these venues are still real hot!! Standard Hotel, 848 Washington Street NY, NY 10014 212.645.4646 http://www.standardhotels.com/new-york-city/ A logical choice; featured in our May 24th posting, this hotel serves as the Highline’s anchor, soaring 18 stories above the now defunct rail-line.  Details about future venues at The Standard are on the nebulous side, but this summer expect the opening of five bars (one on the top floor overlooking the Highline) and two restaurants.  If you can’t bear to wait a few months for The Standard to reach full operation, then check out the bar adjacent to the lobby, which features a comfortable indoor area and an outdoor lounge equipped with cozy fire pits. Need a travel backpack?

Hot off the press (well, from a couple weeks ago – November 30th, 2009) is a wonderful little article by Susan Fogwell of the Examiner.com. Susan is a travel focused writer for the Examiner.com and she recently took some time to test out her very own Ivar backpack. What she found is the same thing all other owners of an Ivar pack find out; that there’s truly no other backpack like an Ivar

Guest Houses, Inns and Hotels in Northern Spain

Northern Spain and Galicia offer an exceptional variety of visitor accommodation. Accommodation can be found that will fit all forms of budgets and even the most particular tourists will find something to suit their particular needs. If it is luxury that you are after then the best advice should be to head straight for the exclusive hotels and “Paradors” but to be honest even the basic family “casas rurales” are extremely good value for money.

A Turbulent Flight

There are certain books that begin with a great premise and a great main character but which are simply unable to deliver on the promise of a well-told story.   This is one of those books.   This 303-page tale of a modern airline traveler loses its interest, its energy and its wings at about the 200-page mark.   From then on, the engines are stalled and the story glides awkwardly to a crash landing on a foam-filled runway. Up in the Air is the story of Ryan Bingham, a so-called Career Transition Counselor, who is hired to help downsizing companies get rid of employees without having them go postal.   Bingham must be part psychologist, part upward mobility trainer and – to a large part – a fraudulent New Age guru who’s supposed to convince the terminated workers that its all for the best.   Of course, Bingham (who views himself as a type of glorified and special purpose accountant) never has to stick around to view the actual damage – the failed marriages, lost homes and suicides.   He convinces himself that he does more good than harm as he flies every day or two on Great West Airlines circa 2001. As we meet the not-t00-likeable and self-absorbed Bingham, he’s submitted his resignation because he is about to accomplish the main goal of his life.   His primary objective is to be the tenth person in the domestic carrier’s history who has flown 1,000,000 miles without leaving the U.S.   Bingham travels so much that he has no home or apartment, he lives in the thin atmosphere land he calls “Airworld.” There’s a lot of inside baseball talk that frequent flyers and frequent lodging chain sleepers will find entertaining…   For example, there’s much debate about the merits of Hilton-owned Hampton Inns versus Marriott Courtyards.   Which one is the best base for corporate warriors, and why is it that a traveler feels almost invisible at the larger Marriott and Hilton properties?   (And why is it that frequent travelers come to need Sound Soothers to sleep?)   Bingham also has this marvelous machine called the Hand Star, the apparent precursor of today’s BlackBerry smartphone.
