Hostile work environment at Galleon Group apparently contributed to insider-trading scandal
Last month a Babson College professor wrote about the correlation between bad bosses and bad decision-making , and he explained the reasons why bad bosses played key roles in the chains of bad decisions that have led to the downfall of well-known companies such as AIG , Bear Stearns , and Lehman Brothers . Only one month later, we are witnessing yet another example of a company creating a hostile work environment that becomes a breeding ground for bad decisions which ultimately cripple the organization. Galleon Group , the $3 billion hedge fund co-founded by Raj Rajaratnam that is now caught up in one of the largest insider-trading cases in decades. Rajaratnam and five other executives were arrested on Friday and were charged with securities fraud and conspiracy for their involvement in an insider-trading ring that allegedly traded on nonpublic information involving companies such as Google , Hilton Hotels , and IBM . Abusive bosses apparently created a hostile work environment at Galleon Group that put extreme pressure on its traders, by publicly humiliating or firing employees , to get valuable information about investment target companies. The Wall Street Journal reports that a “senior trader, Leon Shaulov , who wasn’t named in any federal charges, sometimes berated traders or analysts who couldn’t uncover enough information that could move stocks, say several current and former employees….Nearby, Mr. Rajaratnam would listen to the commotion through the glass door to his office. Through Galleon, Mr.

“Wee Small Hours” October 11th, 2009 “I can’t do this all by myself” Sally’s teacher, sitting in Don’s car in the middle of the night, says that she is going to read her new class “I Have a Dream” on the first day back to school. However, she also indicates that they already know it: I don’t think she’s insinuating that they’ve heard the speech, but rather that there is something in child-like innocence that embraces the image of a dream and of a better future

As a part-time DJ and Karaoke Host in Chicago, I spend a lot of time hanging around the bar/club scene, and I’ve befriended many bartenders and servers over the years. When we’re having a particularly slow night, we’ll sit at the end of the bar together, sip some pops (aka sodas) and gab about “bar life.” The other night, I started chatting about tips with my bartender friend Heather. In the United States, it is customary to tip a bartender/server/cabbie/etc.

Among these consuymers willing to pay more to tarvel green, 39 percent would pay as much as a 5 percent fare to an environmentally responsible supplier, and an equal percentage would pay between 5 and 9 percent more.
Tough call: Dropping from a five star to a four star rating
Starwood just announced it’s going to allow some of its properties to drop a star rating, along with prices and amenities, to compete with competitors such as Intercontinental and Hilton. Traditionally, a five-star rating (the highest possible rating on the Mobil Travel Guide ) allows hotel owners to charge higher rates for amenities and services. These days though, many of these luxury property owners are willing to forego some of the requirements for five-star hotels such as flowers and 24-hour room service in order to save some money

Before you start to try to do it yourself, and before you spend too much money with online travel sites or Do-It-Yourself travel sites, think about using a travel agent
