Photo of the Day: Motorbike Mania
The ubiquitous form of transport throughout Indonesia is without a doubt the motorcycle. Not only do they ‘possess’ the road, they are a cheap form of transport used by a majority of Indonesians. Even the police have cool looking bikes ( foto left ).

Great Ocean Views in Bali
Being an island surrounded by crystal-clear blue ocean, albeit polluted in some places, it is only natural that in Bali there are some spectacular sea views. These views might be from cliffs or along stretches of coastal road and even from jungle areas fronting onto the beach

Temples in Bali
The numerous facets of Balinese culture are truly amazing and one of these is the Balinese temple ; it could be a family temple at home or, a community temple in a village or town. Whatever the case may be, the many temples on the island of Bali are worth visiting even if it’s just for the experience

Kuta in Lombok
I was eager to visit Kuta on my last sojourn to Lombok mainly out of curiosity. That, and the fact so many people had told me of its pristine appeal to travellers as well as being a good surf break. This tiny village on the sweeping bay of white sand and coconut palms was refreshing and the total opposite to that of its counterpart on the sister island of Bali .

Waterfalls in Bali
There is so much natural beauty to see in Bali that is at times overwhelming. One of the nicest to visit is one of the many waterfalls on the island; the most popular being Gitgit Falls in the north of the island. Rivers flow best during and immediately after the wet season, meaning November to April

Photo of the Day: Cidomo’s in Lombok
Over the decades I have ridden in most horse-drawn means of transport across the archipelago. However, there was one form that I wasn’t eager to ride in and, I still haven’t. On the island of Lombok the horse-drawn transport for most locals is a Cidomo

A Guide to Buying Balinese Handicrafts
Bali is renowned throughout the archipelago of Indonesia and overseas for their handicrafts . You could say that Bali is a mecca for arts and handicrafts. You might browse what is on offer in the Kuta area, but if you want the genuine article and not just a ‘copy’ [as so often seen in the tourist strip] it is far better to visit the village of origin for the particular handicraft you re seeking.

New Fingerprint Laws are History
I have great news for incoming tourists to Bali . The new immigration laws that I wrote about the other week concerning having your photo and fingerprints taken upon arriving in Bali are now cactus! In other words, dead, habis , gone and for the near future, not to return.

Handicraft Factory Outlets in Bali
There are times when one just doesn’t feel like tramping around the various markets in the tourist strip of Bali ; that relentless search for a cool T-Shirt or a pair of boardies or even handicrafts.

The Pottery of Banyumulek: Lombok
There were two places I wanted to visit when I visited Lombok ; the traditional weavers of Sukarara and the pottery at Banyumulek . Fortunately I was able to experience both of these places in the short time I had in Lombok. Banyumulek is one of the three major pottery villages on the island.

The night before Nyepi when Candika and I walked down to Jalan Melasti to see the Ogoh-ogoh was indeed a strange night. Close to 6pm most of the shops had closed as did several of the restorans we passed. In fact, there were a lot of people wandering around to find a place for an
