Stop Talking About It And Just Build It

Saw this great video about Facebook’s development team today.  Got me thinking…more companies need to think like this.  Focused, uninterrupted work is the greatest gift you have…but how often do we really do it? Generally speaking, if you are answering your phone, opening snail mail, chatting, emailing, even talking with other people at all…you are NOT working.  Sorry to say it but you’re not.  Work is when you are alone, by yourself in your room, with all communication devices turned off.  20 minutes later you’ll actually be in the zone and then you’re really working.  That’s when you get real writing done.  That’s when you can strategize about the next moves for your company.  That’s when you can design great marketing.  That’s when you can design great art or great engineering.  That’s where breakthroughs happen.  That’s when you see connections between completely different ideas and how they could be better together.  That’s when you really produce instead of just reacting to things all day

HOW TO STUDY LA DOLCE VITA IN SIENA? Ten steps to experience Siena and the Sienese life

When I first mentioned the name of the course I was going to follow in Siena to one of my best friends, she only giggled. La dolce vita, that’s nothing you can learn – in her opinion. But trust me: once you enter the magical world of this course, the Italian way of life will have an everlasting influence on everything you’ll do! La dolce vita definitely is not the same as the famous dolce far niente

Total Expenses Living In Buenos Aires Last Month: $1,018

This entry is part 5 of 5 in the series Living Abroad I just finished doing my financial statements for last month, and was pretty happy when I noticed that it only cost a total of $1,018 USD for me to live and work in Buenos Aires last month!  That’s really cheap, certainly much cheaper than living in the U.S. This proves the point I wrote about a while back , which is that it really isn’t that expensive to travel the world if you do it right. How can you afford to travel the world

Reader Question: How To Start A Coffee Shop

Check out this question from a Breaking Free reader… Hey Brian, I have been thinking about opening a coffee shop, not long actually probably for this past month, Im 21 years old and currently part of an internship. I have a lot of time to plan, and research, but I cant seem to grasp what exactly I need to do. The obvious would be taking a basic course in business, however, in the meantime… Do you have any suggestions on what I should start learning, if I am someday to own a coffee lounge

Shrimp and More at Mariscos Chente

If I had to choose my favorite non-fish seafood, it would be shrimp all the way and if you’re a shrimp lover like me, than Mariscos Chente should be on your to go list. I had actually paid a visit to the Marsicos Chente location in Lennox a few months back and loved my meal there, so I was really interested in seeing if the consistency would be the same at their other location in Mar Vista. Bill aka Street Gourmet LA made all the arrangements for our meal there and what a feast it was.

The Surprising, But Fun Flavors of Paciugo Gelato

Summer is around the corner, which means cones dripping with ice cream will soon be the rule and not the exception, although with me, it could be 20 degrees below outside and as long as I’m warm and toasty inside, ice cream would still be my favorite sweet treat. To jump start ice cream season, I set up a gelato and sorbet tasting for my dining group at Paciugo Gelato in Hermosa Beach owned and run by daughter and mother team, Brittny Thacker and Monien Ibarra, respectively

Already Planning a Return Trip to Natalie Peruvian Seafood Restaurant

I’m sure everyone can relate to having show tickets and trying to figure out where to grab a bite to eat beforehand. That was my dilemma as I was rushing from work to meet a couple of friends and of course, on my way there, I got a call with the inevitable question, “Where should we eat?” Given that the show was at the Pantages Theater, which isn’t too far from Thai Town, a Thai restaurant was the obvious choice, but for once, I wasn’t in the mood for Asian food

Italian language course for Teachers: read our STUDENTS’ OPINION!

Our Teacher Carla from Scuola Leonardo da Vinci Florence asked his students attending the course for Italian language Teachers held in October 2008 an opinion about their experience at Scuola Leonardo.

Checking Out the Summer Select Prix Fixe Menu in The Dining Room

After I blogged about the Chocolate Afternoon Tea at the Langham Hotel , I was invited back to check out the Summer Select Prix Fixe Menu at their restaurant, The Dining Room. Again, I have to say thanks to Tara of When Tara Met Blog and the Langham Hotel . Given that The Dining Room was the only hotel restaurant to receive a Michelin star in 2008 under Executive Chef, Craig Strong, I was really looking forward to the meal; however, I should note that by the time I dined at The Dining Room, Chef Strong had taken a new position with Montage Hotels in Laguna Beach

Five fun-filled weeks in Frankfurt

It is hard to believe, now that my 5 weeks on a German course in Frankfurt are drawing to a close, but when I arrived, I was actually quite nervous. A foreign country, a language I then hardly spoke and living with perfect strangers – of course I was nervous! But when I saw the smiling face of my host mother, holding a sign with my name, I somehow knew everything would be all right – and I would come to realize that it would be so, so much more than that! Upon arriving at my home for the following 5 weeks, I immediately felt most welcome. I had dinner with my host family and after getting over my initial shyness, I actually began joining in already

My two months in Lima….

Thinking back on my two months in Lima, I’m having a difficult time classifying my time here, and I think that says a lot in itself about the Peru that I’ve gotten to know! There’s so much diversity here that you can’t place much in categories, generalize and get away with it – there’s far too much here for that. From the three climate zones – la costa (the coast), la sierra (the mountains), and la selva (the rainforest) – to the people that inhabit those regions, to the obviously vast differences in the socio-economic makeup of the country; there is just too much variety to say any one thing about Peru

Retail Therapy in Montreal!

One word and one word only comes to mind when I think of Montreal: SHOPPING! As your average red-blooded American girl, I already had my share of shopping experience under my oh so fashionable belt when I arrived in Montreal, BUT even I was soon exhausted from going from boutique to fabulous boutique in this amazing city! Of course, I’d come here to learn French, and that’s what I did – not only in my classes every morning in the school – but also every afternoon, out exploring the city and its wonderful shops! There simply isn’t enough time in the day to see every store in Canada’s fashion capital and thanks to their expansive underground, you don’t even have to go outside the city centre if you don’t want to. Sure, they have big name chains but what makes Montreal shopping particularly special is the little shops you can’t find anywhere else. What’s best about these tiny boutiques is that you know no one back home is going to be wearing what you’re wearing.
