Vacation Goals

I’m leaving on a jet plane on Saturday morning (can you hear John Denver in the background?), which makes me happy.  I really like airports and the whole flying process, not to mention the vacation that goes with the flying.  I even like some good, old-fashioned turbulence. In order to get the most out of the trip, I decided to make another to do list.  Why not kill a totally unstructured week with requirements and rules, right?  Most of the Colorado goals support the main goals of relaxation and quality time with my parents, so I don’t think it’ll be too stressful.  Without further ado, here’s the current list: Go hiking.  My parents’ property doesn’t count, even if you do risk meeting mountain lions anywhere above the irrigation ditch

words as weapons

6 august, 2010.  continued. it was the first time i had been on a train in germany that wasn’t completely packed, or at least wasn’t continually almost full, the amount of people getting off equal to the amount getting on.  as we crawled closer to berlin, though, the car filled slowly and i felt more and more like an asshole for taking up one of those 4-seater areas with myself and my huge pile of crap.  not enough of an asshole to move.  well, not until we neared my transfer point

Loving Airports

It is a place where I get to meet a lot of people, make friends, discover stuffs, buy some cute souvenirs and sometimes get treated to a sumptuous meal or simply get a taste of some of the local foodies. I could still remember that day, when I was travelling back from a foreign assignment

FAA Bill Creates Today’s Jobs; Infrastructure Bank Creates Tomorrow’s Jobs

I’m reading a new biography of Henry Clay ( Henry Clay:  The Essential American , by David and Jeanne Heidler; I recommend it).  One of Clay’s big ideas was federal support for what were then called “internal improvements;” what we call today “infrastructure.”  By coincidence, last night I read the portion of the book that discussed a proposal made after the War of 1812 to use dividends from the then-Bank of the United States to finance internal improvements.  What one might call, an Infrastructure Bank.  I say “by coincidence” because yesterday, the president announced a series of infrastructure proposals that included an Infrastructure Bank.   I applaud the president for focusing on infrastructure, and for including airports in his proposal.  Aviation is often forgotten in these kinds of announcements.  But, in reality, for aviation, and for the country, the best thing the president and Congress can do is work to pass the FAA Reauthorization Bill that has already been passed in different forms by both houses of Congress.  Both bills contemplate an increased federal grant program for aviation infrastructure.  Most importantly, the House bill also contemplates an increase in the Passenger Facility Charge user fee cap by $2.50.  NOTHING would do more to put people to work (125,000 annually by our estimation) and improve our aviation infrastructure than passing this bill into law.  And, it does NOT increase the federal deficit.  Jobs and the deficit are the big political issues this year.  FAA Reauthorization, with the PFC cap increase, is the only bill I know of that aggressively attacks both.  The Infrastructure Bank may be a good idea; we’ll await the details.  But we KNOW what the FAA Reauthorization Bill will do.  Pass it now!

Southampton Airport is now using renewal energy to power its runway safety lighting. Following a successful trial of the lights last winter, the airport has installed five solar-powered LED runway safety lighting units – a first for UK airports – to replace the conventional lighting system. Powered by solar panels, the batteries are able to store sufficient

alain de botton: on going to the airport

Nowhere is the appeal of the airport more concentrated than in the television screens that hang in rows from terminal ceilings announcing the departure and arrival of flights…Tokyo, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Singapore, Rio. The screens all bear the poetic resonance of the last line of James Joyce’s Ulysses: at once a record of where the novel was written , and, no less importantly, a symbol of the cosmopolitan spirit behind its composition. The constant calls of the screens, some accompanied by the impatient pulsing of a cursor, suggest with what ease our seemingly entrenched lives might be altered were we to walk down a corridor and on to a craft that in a few hours would  land us in a place of which we had no memories and where no one knew our names

Free Phone Calls!

As part of Google’s roll out of Google Voice and Gmail integration, they plan to install these red phone booths across the US in universities and airports. Calls from the booth are free to any number in the world, though Google will post some kind of sign or something asking people to limit the times of their calls if there is a line of people.
